I think that's likely to be the model for the anime from here on out: half a year canon, half a year filler. There are enough indications in the opening theme that we'll get TBTP in this batch of canon episodes, then I reckon we'll have another shitty little story arc in which Soul Society is Under Threat from Some Dude.

Still got to be careful of spoilers. I think the full title for TBTP is enough of a spoiler in and of itself, as are things like WW, etc. Or does no one care about spoilers from the comic any more? Is there just a point with Bleach at which everyone jumps ship to the black and white version?

I care! No comic spoilers please!

Although as you mention it, I did actually jump ship to the black and white version in anticipation of what's happening in the animé now (which is basically YES YES YES) and although I found lots to like in it (those big chunky brush strokes on the lettering etc) I reversed on my decision and decided to wait for the animation. I'd barely got as far as what happened in the most recent episode...

Although it's quite interesting to see how it's adapted and what's added in, comedy filler and so forth, I think because I started with the animé I'm more inclined to feel warm towards it. I missed the additional exposition/context, as well as the musical backing it provides; although the manga is interesting in it's own right for it's starkness. Plus I don't like reading comics on a screen. I like to have somebody put it all together for me!

OK then. No spoilers on pain of death. That's that decided.

I'm thinking it might be a good idea to put a Filler/Canon flag in the topic abstract so that casual thread browsers know when the adaptation is coming out weekly. Good idea? Bad idea?

I'm not quite sure I understand you. Do you mean, to periodically mod the summary so it shows CANON! some weeks and FILLER! others? It sounds like a fair amount of work, but anything that'd boost interest in the thread/series is fine with me.

Agree with Suedey that for all the brilliance of the manga, the anime is really where it's at. It's what got me into the magic of Bleach in the first place and while the key animation doesn't always do full justice to Kubo's superb knack for conveying kinetics and rendering expressive faces, the addition of colour, music and - most importantly - top-flight voice acting to his stories and characters gives them so much life I can forgive the odd lapse. Little things like Nel's sudden transformation back to child-size, and Pesshe and Dondochakka's Cero Sincrético attack, have been adapted really well; the music under the closing scenes of this week's episode did a lot for a slightly clunky montage; and hearing the voice actors returning to the roles of Kenpachi, Unohana, Byakuya and Mayuri reminded me how much they add to my impression of each character. Mayuri's seiyu in particular has the most wonderfully casual, insinuating, flutey voice that makes his back-and-forth with the similarly creepy-sounding Szayel Aporro a lot of fun.

The 'Where are you going?!' gag in the Arrancar Encyclopedia skit was pretty funny, even if they did nick it from Busou Renkin. And just in case anyone's been wondering why no previews for the last few weeks, they've been replaced with trailers for the third movie due out on December 13th, which Dattebayo can't be bothered to include in their releases. So there.

BYAKUYA!

*draws pink sparkly hearts round him*

Sorry that's the most coherent thing I can manage about the last two episodes

The most extreme moments have survived rather well into the adaptation, haven't they? The constant commenting on what it's appropriate to air during the Szayel fight has been spot on. Replacing the icky dessicated Nemu pregancy thing with the Szayel-zygote splitting and multiplying was a lovely little nasty replacement image for showing something too vile to screen. And while Byakuya and Mayuri's fights could be adapted in a static manner I'm gratified that the animation quality leaped in the second half of #200, because the Kenpachi/Nnoitra fight really needs a lot of movement. I'm betting it will be a lot better in the anime than it was in the comic.

Finally, Szayel is dead. Good god, it takes long enough to kill that fucker. Unless he's waiting in the wings inside Ashisogi Jizō for another try, like he did inside Nemu...

Do we want to take this discussion elsewhere?

It looks increasingly likely that Barbelith may not be around much longer. There are people in the Policy forum petitioning to get it closed down. I've got about enoguh time in my life to conduct an online discussion on something I enjoy, but not not really to engage with board politics or try to change anyone's mind.

Ultimately the decision to close Barbelith would be made by made by Tom Coates. He hasn't expressed much of an interest in this place, and I wouldn't be surprised if one day he just decided to turn it off. We may not even have this place available as an archive. It could happen at any point and we may not get prior warning. That possibility becomes exponentially more likely with petitions like the one in the Policy at the moment.

I've enjoyed all the anime threads immensely and have quite an ongoing investment in the Bleach threads in particular (both of which I've saved on my hard drive).

I do not want that enjoyment to be contingent on a disinterested board-owner, in much the same way as I don't think anyone else's decision to leave Barbelith should be contingent on that board-owner choosing to shut it down.

If you want to continue these discussions somewhere other than Barbelith then please send me a PM with your email address or contact me at seth dot cooke at virgin dot net. I won't be posting in this thread any more and will resume the discussion elsewhere (at the moment it's looking likely that it'll be an invite only mailing list of some sort, with potential to grow into something else if there's interest).

Contact me if you would be interested in participating in a discussion of anime and or/theory-Bleaching elsewhere.

Not reading passed page 19 of this as I just finished episode 167. Did read the final abandon ship post and death of this thread. Tried emailing Seth but no joy. Can someone PM me where the convo is happening now?

Much Bleach love!
