Hmmm. Just rewatched it after reading elsewhere that Kariya dies like any other Bound. And yes, the visuals certainly seem to indicate that, what with him apparently crumbling to dust and his clothes falling to the floor.

But it's that line of Ichigo's that makes me wonder: "At the end, he just disappears by himself." Then Rukia, "Perhaps this is what he intended from the start." Ichigo: "Maybe he just wanted to put an end to his eternal torment."

It's the "disappears by himself" that's the sticking point. Is it down to the translation? It makes it sound as though Kariya isn't dead, that he's just gone. And if he is dead then Ichigo isn't putting it down to his final strike as the killing blow, he's making it sound as though Kariya killed himself, or let Ichigo cut him. But Kariya doesn't seem to be wounded from that last attack.

Am I reading too much into this?

To anyone who didn't watch the Bound arc, that's understandable... but Thursday night's final episode was completely brilliant. One of the best of the lot.

So many good moments in there. Great to see them leave Kariya's fate as ambiguous, and there's a lot of time devoted in the episode to characters trying to figure out why he did what he did and why he died the way he died. A brave move to leave so much of his characterisation and motivation absent.

I loved that Koga survived... assisted by Yoruichi (Urahara's eyes and ears. The Bound arc made all that a hell of a lot more creepy, she was always up to something in the background). Shame that Maki doesn't seem to. Ran'Tao is also still alive. Rin Rin, Cloud and Nova are back in the real world. There are enough threads left hanging to at least give the illusion that this arc will have lasting ramifications, even if it doesn't.

All that was ace. The best bits were the flashbacks, though, which bought the whole series full circle by coming back to key moments in Rukia, Ichigo and Renji's lives just before Rukia's assignment to Karakura Town in the first episode. Particularly Ichigo's flashback, which carried quite an emotional punch. His conversation with the dead girl at the lamp post whose flowers he defends when we meet him right at the start is a wonderful piece of writing, making you feel three or four things at once.

And next week it's back to adapting the comics! Weeeeeeeeee! The best ongoing series on telly is getting back on track!

The clips for the movie at the start of each episode contain a section that has me frothing at the mouth for the film...

... Rukia's shikai.

Oh hell yes. A fully powered Rukia. What I've been waiting for, for bloody ages.

Dattebayo should sub the movie for around April time, which is far too long to wait.

All right, I admit to finding myself defeated by the Bound arc (having retired around the time of the headphones-wearing guy [Koga?] flashing back to his time on the farm), but I'm starting to get interested again now.

For those of us in my position - bone idle, namely - any chance you could nominate a good episode to jump back on before the Bound arc ends, so we're all up to speed again when the manga adaptation begins again?

I'd pick it up with episode 98.

The backstory up to there:

Ishida has allowed the Bound to enter Soul Society.

Mayuri has been manipulated by the Bound into giving Ishida a rare Quincy battle accessory that has repowered him, but in an unstable fashion. It could backfire and kill him at any time. It is this accessory that has allowed access to Soul Society.

Rukia has been wounded following a clash with one of the Bound, which she only just survived by courage and cunning alone.

Kariya, bent on revenge against the Shinigami (I'm not sure if the reasons why have been disclosed by this point), has recruited an army from the slums of Rukongai.

Maki, Kariya Jin's Soul Society agent, bears a huge grudge against a certain Shinigami for killing his old captain.

Enjoy. There's some cracking stuff. To be honest it's pretty much all good from the moment they return to Soul Society, a bit of searching should find you that episode a little further back.

Holy shit that was great.

The change of pace is just unbelievable. After a year's worth of episodes that go nowhere, suddenly in the space of twenty-five minutes four MAJOR plot bombs blow the shape of the show totally askew. Some of which appear to have been planned from the start.

- Grand Fisher is back. And very different looking too.

- Tatsuki can see the Shinigami knick-knack that Ukitake gave to Ichigo, and can also see Ichigo out-of-body.

- Shinji's introduction, and the whole Vaizard thing. In the closing credits he appears with what may be another Vaizard who looks a lot like a blonde Lady Sovereign.

- Ishida's Dad! Fuckin' awesome!

All that and there's still time for Urahara looking shifty again (he seems to know far too much), Rukia's replacement at Karakura town, Rin Rin, Cloud and Nova's continuining presence, a lot of goofing off, Orihime hilariously lying about needing the toilet, a lot of lines for the teacher, Ishida having a ton of tricks up his sleeve, the Beef/Pork Hollow, some kind of weird twinned Menos Grande, and this played for laughs exchange from the next episode box:

Ichigo: "Like father like son. That's just messed up."

Not sure who: "You're one to talk."

Ichigo: "Why?"

"..."

Not sure who: "It's a secret."

A total rush, and the first time I've seen a new episode twice in two days since I was a teenager and watching DS9.

Yeah, that was great. Ishida's dad is a badass Quincy after all! This should be a great plot thread to follow, as Ishida has every right to be righteously pissed off at him, but he's such a self-contained, laid back character that I'm not sure he will be.

Vaizards, eh? So now we have a name for what Ichigo is, and there's more of them, with knowledge of their powers that far outstrips his, natch. Oh, and they're evil as fuck, one would think. Cue Ichigo gaining massive new powers and techniques to fight the baddies. Probably the main plot thread, no?

Grand Fisher being back is great, as I thought he seemed like way too good a villain to toss aside so easily. The "lure" is truly ick. Too early to say where this is going, but I'm happy about it.

And Tasuki-Chan has powers! That's rock and roll! Something must have happened to her between now and that early episode where Inoue's brother-Hollow gave her a good kicking and she couldn't see a thing. What that something might be, I'm not even going to speculate. Again, too early, and I'd just suspect Uruhara is behind everything because he's so fucking sketch all the time.

This is great. I feel a little bad that I couldn't stomach the Bound arc, but this is top-notch entertainment once again. Also, it's the first time I've ever watched a show as it came out, which is exciting in and of itself.

I have no idea who the Vaizard are likely to align themselves with, or whether they'll be like the Shinigami and have as many different motivations and allegiances as there are characters. One slight concern is that the Vaizard are supposed to be more powerful than the Shinigami, so if the story progresses with Ichigo working his way up their power scale there are about thirty Soul Society characters who he's left in the dust. Not that he hasn't already, he's roughly Captain rank, but you know what I mean.

The Vaizard are part Hollow, though, so I would expect them to be, on the whole, more sinister than the Shinigami.

Ichigo will leave plenty of people behind in power level over the course of this show, I'm certain, but I'm sure the more popular/important characters will also gain power. I can't imagine the more prominent Captains or the core high school crew becoming irrelevant. Or Renji (dude should probably get promoted, right?).

Yeah, the lack of anime watching on Barbelith is something that I'm increasingly finding pretty disgusting. With most of the shows talked about round here I'd struggle to post a single sentence, but you turn your back for a second and there's seven pages of guff talked about a series that would disappear if you turned it sideways.

On the subject of the Thirteen Divisions... yes, I'm pretty sure there are some promotions due soon. Renji deserves to be a captain. He may be an idiot but he's earned his bankai.

As for episode 111 (spoiler space will remain until the abstract gets amended):

Dude. Best show on television. Ichigo's Dad. Ichigo's. Dad. That was a fantastic moment. Not only is he a Shinigami, he's a badass, Captain-class Shinigami who seems to know everything, after we thought he was just a bumbling lout overcompensating as a single parent. I love it. It's actually hard to articulate how much I love this development.

Actually, on further thought, I love this even more, and I want to talk about it for a sec. Ichigo's Dad was one of my favorite bit characters before this. There was something so poignant about him, as he was always projecting this bouncy, happy persona, but it was clear, from the poster and shrine to his dead wife alone, that it was killing him that she was gone. He seemed to have put all of his heart and soul into his work and, especially, his children. He babies the girls and overprotects them, and tries to challenge Ichigo at every turn, you know, traditional guy stuff, being a "man's man." And all that characterization is buried under the surface of generic, one-note "comedy character." I always loved that about him. Now, we find that there's a whole new layer of character underneath that. And the big reveal didn't invalidate any of the stuff that came before, it just gave it another dimension. God, this show is well-written.

Agree that the Fisher isn't dead yet, we didn't see the mask crack. Arrancarrs are an interesting development, the inverse of the Vaizard. I can see the Shinigami gettig caught between these two powerful forces and having to adapt and evolve to defeat them. Just a thought- does Ichigo's Dad know that the Fisher killed his wife? If he does, he has supreme self-control. If not, watch the fuck out.

Ishida's Dad is kind of a cock, agreed. I love Ishida, and I can't wait to see how this plays out. He needs to get his powers back so he doesn't feel useless around his friends, but he's such a stiff that I can't see him breaking his promise.

As someone who didn't watch the Bound arc, I thought the bits with the other mod-souls felt pretty forced, to be honest. I wish they'd have killed 'em off, myself. I don't particularly care for their character designs or personae.

It's a good question about whether Isshin knows about the Grand Fisher. He was with Kon during Ichigo's fight. However, he knows all about Ichigo being a Shinigami, knows all about Kon and might even know about Ichigo also being a Vaizard. It's impossible to say right now how clued up he is, unless you're reading the comic, which I'm not.

Suspicious that Urahara and Isshin have both just decided to move to Karakura Town to set up their new lives outside of Soul Society, eh?

Jake, Colossus of Clout
17:39 / 19.01.07
I wonder if Isshin, who seems like a stand-up guy, is keeping an eye on Uruhara. Uruhara was like the Chief Mad Scientist, right? Did we ever get any background on his leaving Soul Society? I wonder if he retired or "was retired." With Isshin recruited to keep an eye on him.

So much going on. Love it. We've kissed the spoiler tags goodbye, right?

Uruhara was like the Chief Mad Scientist, right? Did we ever get any background on his leaving Soul Society? I wonder if he retired or "was retired." With Isshin recruited to keep an eye on him.

From what I can remember this has barely been addressed. The following is from answers.com, which has refreshed my memory:

At some point (over 100 years before the main Bleach storyline), Kisuke was sentenced into exile by Soul Society for creating an untraceable gigai, which also caused the spiritual power of the shinigami inside it to deteriorate, along with his creation of the Hōgyoku.[1] Yoruichi Shihouin ran away with him as well, for reasons yet unknown.

I wouldn't recommend looking at the answers.com pages unless you're capable of scanning information quickly for relevant information. There are a lot of spoilers on there.

I'm not a diehard anime fan, but I've seen all the good stuff that's been on Cartoon Network and the big-time movies like Ninja Scroll, Akira, the Miyazaki stuff. Throw any recommendations you might have my way.

Stuff I'd recommend in a shot (besides Bleach) includes Evangelion (26 eps + movie), Gunbuster (6 eps), Gunbuster II (6 eps), FLCL (6 eps), Serial Experiments: Lain (13 eps), Paranoia Agent (13 or 14 eps), Eureka Seven (50 eps), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (13 or 14 eps), Azumanga Daioh (26 eps), Ouran High School Host Club (26 eps), the two Patlabor movies (I've heard there's a third, not seen the series) and anything with Studio Ghibi's name attached (and to be honest I'd probably now say anything with Gainax' name attached). A lot of those titles already have their own threads or have been mentioned in the Anime thread.

Stuff I wouldn't recommend, for varying reasons, would be Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Boogiepop Phantom, Najica Blitz Tactics and probably a bunch of other stuff. But there are people who would disagree.

I've only been avidly watching anime series for the last year, and so most of the above I've watched in the last twelve months. I also like getting recommendations!

Regarding Bound arc characters cropping up in the main arc, I would be more concerned if they didn't. Cranking out Bleach content when you have no comic to adapt is a dubious practise that means you can't mess with anything that the writer of the comics is setting up, but to just write off a year in continuity and not refer to it again would be disrespectful of anyone who has stuck with the show. Now that they've done these things they can't undo them, and having filler within an adapted arc is arguably a better way to continue to add padding than sticking in a whole padding arc.

The stuff with the mod soul characters didn't take up too much time (plus I've had a soft spot for Rin Rin after how fervently she defended Rukia considering despite being jealous because of how she's in love with Ichigo), and there was still space for two major revelations (Isshin and Grand Fisher now being an Arrancar) plus some good character stuff with Ryuken, Ishida and Ichigo.

Jake, Colossus of Clout
01:06 / 20.01.07
Yeah, you're right. There was so much going on, anyway, and I agree that padding in small doses is much better than big chunks of padding at one time. Unless, of course, there are more huge filler arcs like "Bound" that create more characters that then have to be incorporated into the manga adaptation episodes. We'll have to see how they play it when they catch up again.

Thanks for the recommendations! I've seen FLCL and a good bit of Paranoia Agent on Cartoon Network. I'd be a little interested in hearing why you don't like Bebop or Champloo, though. I liked both of them, although they were mostly a series of stand-alone episodes with only a vague overarching plot. A much different format from the serial, long-form storytelling of Bleach (Or even InuYasha, Full Metal Alchemist, Dragonball, etc...), but there was some really great stuff in there, and the animation was brilliant, especially on Champloo. They're also easier to get into than serial anime, as you won't be totally lost if you watch an episode from the middle of the series cold. With series like Bleach, you kind of have to watch from the very beginning or it will be completely incomprehensible. Not that that's a bad thing, because it rewards a extended and dedicated viewing, which is very rewarding for the viewer. It's just different.

How long (episode-wise) are the anime you recommended? I don't have a problem with really long anime, but I'd like to know what I'm getting into. Which is your favorite, must-see series out of all those. I've heard wonderful things about Evangelion.

As for recommendations of my own, I love all the Hayao Miyazaki stuff, Ghost in the Shell (I really should still be watching Stand Alone Complex, but can't deal with the godawful dubbing on Cartoon Network. I bet there's a Bleach Portal-like site somewhere), Trigun and also the anime movie The Place Promised In Our Early Days, which is just haunting and flat-out gorgeous.

I watched all of Full Metal Alchemist and most of Dragonball and InuYasha, but I can't really recommend any of them in good conscience. I have a hate for Big O, and I know I've seen a lot of other tripe that CN has trotted out over the years, but I can't remember individual names from the mass of crap that rotates through Saturday nights.

I don't remember all this at all! He was exiled, eh? I may have been a little tipsy while watching some episodes, or I may be getting stupid, but I don't remember the gigai, either. I knew Yoruichi had taken off from Soul Society from her dialogue with the woman who was her pupil and succeeded her as the head of the secret police, or whatever (her name escapes me, I didn't care for her, but you know who I mean. They fought during the last bits of the Soul Society arc). I also knew that she was clearly doing Uruhara's dirty work, but I didn't know they actually left together. Are they lovers? We shall find out. I guess in a series with such a huge amount of characters and subplots, I'm going to miss/forget things.

I'd be a little interested in hearing why you don't like Bebop or Champloo, though. I liked both of them, although they were mostly a series of stand-alone episodes with only a vague overarching plot.

In short I found both to be all style, no substance. I was very disappointed with Bebop because when it reached the halfway stage it really seemed to be going somewhere, but then it just... didn't. I stopped after four episodes of Champloo because it seemed to be more of the same.

How long (episode-wise) are the anime you recommended? I don't have a problem with really long anime, but I'd like to know what I'm getting into. Which is your favorite, must-see series out of all those. I've heard wonderful things about Evangelion.

I can't really pick favourites. Evangelion, the two Gunbusters, FLCL, Eureka Seven and Paranoia Agent are all amongst the best things I've seen, any time, any where, period. Azumanga Daioh is instant happiness on DVD.

I've got a mod request pending to update the above post with episode lengths.

Watch Eureka Seven for how motley outlaws on the run taking dodgy jobs should be done. There's much, much, much more to it than that though.

I don't remember all this at all! He was exiled, eh? I may have been a little tipsy while watching some episodes, or I may be getting stupid, but I don't remember the gigai, either. The untraceable gigai is another term for faux body. I'm pretty sure I remember that this is what he equips Rukia with, which was done at the same moment that he slips the hōgyoku into her as a fairly troublesome hiding place. I'm not sure, but I think this is also what Aizen uses to fake his own death. As it seems that only Urahara is aware of Aizen's plan I think it's fairly clear that there's some unheard history between these two characters.

The relationship between Yoruichi and Urahara hasn't been clarified either. We don't know that they left at the same time as each other, and Yoruichi's motives for leaving are her own. Both seem to be central to where this story is going.

I was very disappointed with Bebop because when it reached the halfway stage it really seemed to be going somewhere, but then it just... didn't. I stopped after four episodes of Champloo because it seemed to be more of the same.

I can see that, but I guess I didn't really look for the same things in it that you did. There wasn't much of a grand story arc, more of a bunch of character vignettes that, together, paint a compelling picture. Champloo is similar, but I thought it, especially the final episodes, were more heartfelt. Neither is one of my favorite shows ever, or anything (I'd take Champloo is pressed), but I enjoyed both of them.

Back on topic: Do you think that Aizen and his two cronies have joined the Vaizard or Arrancarr? There's an interesting dichotomy between the Vaizard and Arrancarr, with the Arrancarr being Hollow with Shinigami added and the Vaizard vice-versa. Last we saw of Aizen and co., they were disappearing into Hollow-land, so it seems like a good guess that they're in cahoots with one or the other. Or they could all be in league with each other. Or none of them. There are so many things I must know!

I guess to know what has happened to Aizen, Tousen and Gin we'd need to know more about the Hollowisation process. Are the Vaizard and Arrancar totally separate strains or is there no real difference? I actually know a spoiler here so I can't go into detail, but I am very curious to see how it plays out.

Not really, though. I'm interested in how the manga stacks up against the anime. Is it pretty much exact, except for those elements of the "Bound" plotline that get shoehorned in, or do they "TV up" other aspects?

I know I shouldn't discuss the comic too much here, but to answer you I want to link to the manga episodes that cover return from Soul Society up till the revelation of Isshin as a Shinigami. It's worth noting that in the scenes common to both, the anime and manga are pretty much identical. The manga does contain extra scenes, details, minor events and conversations which SO FAR are unique to the manga, but I don't think there are plot-line spoilers within those, although they might throw off some of the (off-track) speculation in the history of this thread (especially the episode 182 return from Soul Society, which I don't think featured in the anime at all??)

I've reviewed the episodes below and 183 to 186 are virtually identical to the anime, with no plot spoilers or extras. I think I spotted a single, non-significant difference in the episodes below.

manga 183, back to school
manga 184, the menos appear
manga 185, the menos attack
manga 186, the fathers appear

Of course the manga is (mostly) black and white, but the art is (I think) more elaborate and stylistic. The Hollow (grand fisher especially) look more sinister, everyone looks more serious. The manga is also a little more raunchy, and bloody. And the manga cover pages - if you like the anime starting credit sequences, you'll probably like them.

It seems, now that I look at it that there's about a 2- or 3-to-1 ratio of manga to anime episodes, which possibly means future filler arcs this year?? (the comic is about 75 manga episodes ahead)

although they might throw off some of the (off-track) speculation in the history of this thread (especially the episode 182 return from Soul Society, which I don't think featured in the anime at all??)

Just read 182, which was adapted in anime episode 64 (I think. It was defintely around that time). Without spoiling anything that hasn't yet been adapted, what off-track speculation do you mean?

Just watched ep 109. I did the whole Bount arc in five days and I have to say that after all the huge amounts of criticism I'd heard of it, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It never really came close to hitting the Soul Society arc's highs, but it was far from total dreck.

It did a nice job of fleshing out a few of the less developed character, Soi-fon getting a chance to shine without being defined by her relationship to Yoruichii was nice in particular.

Ichinose was an absolute gem of a character, it's a shame that we probably won't see him again, but it was good that his arc came to a nice (and unexpected after his encounter with Kenpachi) close.

Kenpachi remains the best character in the series, but cheering on Mayuri in his fight gave me similar tingles to Zaraki, but left me feeling even dirtier, which is a sign he may be overtaking.

The major issue I have with the arc was Kariya's rise from insane bad-guy to revolutionary leader being thrown away as bastardly manipulation. It wasn't bad writing, like parts of the arc, but exceptionally brave, brilliant writing squandered by laziness.

Yeah, and 109 was worth the whole arc. Quality stuff. Can't wait to watch the next two.

(Seth, I'd be interested to hear your opinions on Boogiepop, I saw the first two last week and freaking loved it but don't want to rot this thread. If no-one does it first I'll start a thread after I watch ep 3 tomorrow if the Anime thread is being frowned upon.)

oooooh, forgot to mention how glad I was that Hollow Ichigo got an outing against Koga in the mid-stage of the arc. I really wasn't expecting him to crop up in the filler, and it caught me by surprise as much as his original appearance in the Byakuya fight. I Heart Hollow Ichigo, deranged genius.

Even more surprising was Renji catching a glimpse of him in the Kariya fight. After that, and with at least Koga suriving the arc, I wouldn't be surprised if the anime began to deviate more and more from the manga. I wouldn't be dissapointed either.

It'd be disrespectful to the fans and creative teams of the Bount arc for it to be ignored, I'd love for the anime to evolve into an expanded and enriched counterpart of the manga. I'm following the English collections of the manga anyway, So i've no pressing desire to see exactly the same story translated on-screen.

I can't really say without giving away stuff that emphatically isn't developed/revealed in the manga. Since absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence, I probably have to admit that in my personal opnion it's off-track, and that I should probably refrain from posting about the manga, like I said I would.

I didn't remember that episode in the anime - the flying carpet, etc. Another case of my memory failing me... sorry!

Red Concrete: Thanks for the manga heads up. It's really interesting to see how they've adapting it, with elements of those issues cropping up fifty episodes ago and elements cropping up this week.

If it's just speculation then I wouldn't worry about posting your thoughts, as long as it's not speculation informed by things we haven't yet seen.

Quarter Circle Back and Kick: Yeah, the Bound arc gets a lot better in its later stages and some of it is great stuff. Ichinose Maki deserved a lot better than he got. Yeah he was deceiving himself, but he was a good guy with his heart in the right place. He just got very hurt along the way and ended up paying too high a price for it.

I own and have seen Boogiepop, and maybe I'll return to it at some point in a year or so. I'm - for better or for worse - a huge charaterisation nut, I love series that portray people who seem real to me. That was the main sticking point with BP, as it seemed quite cold and more interested in ideas than anything else. I dug the modular story telling technique (if you're into that kind of thing then check out Paranoia Agent) but I wasn't really sucked into it. It felt a bit too wilfully obscure to me.

But yes, please do start a thread on it (and give it a paragraph on the Primer thread if you're willing). I'm prepared to say that I just didn't get it, so if people can draw out what they love about it then I may well reassess it.

As for the old anime thread, so far (and to my knowledge) it's only really me and possibly Pin who are frowning on it. I don't moderate this forum but I'm probably going to ask for it to be locked, as it has sucked in far too much discussion that could have been spread throughout the board and developed more.

112 is up.........SPOILERS

It's the first time I've had to wait a week for an episode, it's really made me appreciate how much they can pack into 20-odd minutes.

Isshin and Uruhara get on, at least superficially, Grand Fisher isn't gone for good if I'm reading the "That's his power level for now" line right, and we meet a second Vaizard. Cue squabbling and infighting amongst the opposition, looks like we'l be getting another group of characters with individual goals.

Oh, and it seems that the Vaizard are properly autonomous, but the Arrancar are fully allied with the Menos, and need Aizens help to achieve greater power.

I originally thought that the Vaizard were Shinigami who'd intentionally sought out Hollow powers, and Ichigo was some form of Natural hybrid, but Hirako's comment about "symptons" has scrapped that one for me.
