Cop couldn't read his mind, only got static.
When the cop got static both times he tried to read Bennet and Claire he was nearby.

Bennet looked at Haitian like he was a loser when Petrelli flew away, almost a "Hello, that was YOUR job" look. Ok, that one is a bit of a fan wank stretch, but I think it could be valid.

It would also make sense, because if they were able to grab Radioactive guy without both catching fire/exploding they would have needed to shut him down somehow.

On the first point, I just assumed that he was a hardcore psychic that could put the kibosh on an amateur like the cop. There's plenty of precedent for that sort of thing in superdooper comics.

On the second point, well, that's just pretty weak. Could be valid, but of itself it doesn't tell us much.

Third point is just speculation. Anyway, Haitian has already demonstrated that he has the ability to shut people down (another skill of yer psychic pros) without much effort.

Something that is of note, however, is that Bennett can somehow neutralise peoples' powers. We know this because he told Sylar as much. Now, the Haitian guy might be able to explain that, but even if he can, I'd imagine it's just another psychic thing - a shortcircuit of the brain of somesuch - the kind we've seen folk like Xavier pull bazillions of times over the years.

Well yeah. He isn't like, say, Leech and being near him means powers don't work. I meant to make it more clear that I think he actively needs to keep peoples powers down.

I think it could be that Bennet is immune to powers, but Sylar's TK should be able to work around that by hitting him with the bed or something.

Spaniel
16:11 / 06.12.06
Yeah, if it were just that Bennett were immune, Sylar could've taken that cell apart.

Hiro fighting a dinosaur! With a katana!

That sound you're hearing? That's me squeeing.

I bet it turns out he is just in the Batcave and it is a robot.

Or he fights a robot dinosaur and puts it in the Timecave next to a giant Buffalo Head Nickle...

I found myself trying to work out how it could be less cool than I want it to be - than we're supposed to want it to be - just because I can't believe they're really gonna give us a Hiro vs Dinsaur fight.

It's some kind of misdirection surely.

on another note, Telepathic Feedback scene between Peter and Matt is my new reason for living.

Great episode of mini-climaxes, little twists and character moments: the cute, truthful interaction between the two cops, the surprise of Nikki turning herself in, the satisfying pseudo-science of Peter getting mind-reading powers and the two brains feedbacking.

I'm still seeing Hayden Panettiere develop all kinds of acting powers behind that weirdly bland, moonlike face. And she runs in a really no-nonsense way! Are we meant to think there's a romance of some kind evolving between Peter and Claire?

The Haitian "power-dampener" explanation is still pseudo-science with holes all through it, as far as I can see. No explanation of Bennett's apparent immunity to Sylar, or why Sylar suddenly managed to smash the glass.

Also interesting that when Isaac's not on drugs, his art style is totally different. His published work is Tim Sale ~ the stuff he did when he was off his head. His sober sketches are, I'm sure, by a different artist.

I suppose that is more likely then the Batcave.

Actually the NY Natural History Museum has dinosaurs and a weapons room.

For some reason, watching this episode, I got the feeling that Horn-Rimmed Glasses was the power-dampener, not the Haitian dude. I only saw the ep once so I don't recall all the little pieces of evidence, but that's the impression I got. Looking at some of the above posts I see some others thought the same thing.

Gotta say, this ep was a little better than the others. The show's kinda growing on me, and I'm upset about that because it's also been really atrocious at times.

I think HRG guy as the dampener makes sense, but then there is no reason (so far) for the Haitian to be at the police station.

Can we change the name of Horn-Rimmed Glasses aka Mr Bennet? He so has to be called Gordon. Come on, you know it makes sense...

In the vision Peter has, where has everyone gone? Have they been evacuated? They can't have been obliterated. A nuclear bomb wouldn't leave everything so perfect, and a neutron bomb would leave evidence in the way of clothes and the like.

I can't believe we've got to wait till January 22nd. I can't speculate for that long.

And just how do you stop an exploding man?

We actually don't really know why he's there. IIRC at the end of the scene it looked as if he's going into the station, not out, which would seem to suggest his reason for being there was just getting started.

Right that's the third bastard time I've lost a post so I'm going to do this quickly. Sorry for the brusque tone.

1) The simplest most elegant explanation for the Haitian's presence in the police station is that he was there to block the cop's psychci probes. To look for another explanation, or a deeper mystery without good reason is silly in my book.

2) There is a long history of comic book psychics blocking each other's abiltites. There's even a word for it: psychic shields. I am, of course, assuming that the Haitian is psychic.

3) The Haitian's appearance caps a scene where the question how are the cop's abilities being blocked? is thoroughly set up.

4) The Haitian's appearance comes after the cop states that the last time he felt the same kind of psychic silence was when he was in the bar, just before he lost a load of time. The Haitian was also in the bar. His appearance also capped that scene. Hmmmm.

On Wonderstar's point that the Haitian doesn't offer a good explanation for Bennett's immunity. First of all I think we need to stop thinking in terms of Bennett's immunity and start thinking in terms of power dampening, otherwise why would anyone think that Sylar could be held? Secondly, assuming they have gone down the power dampener route with the Haitian* - something I'm not convinced of, except in the case of the Haitian and the cop - I don't see why that wouldn't suffice as an explanation for Sylar's apparent powerlessness. Sure it begs a lot of questions, but I think that some of those questions could be safely brushed under the carpet and others could be answered at the show's leisure.

On Hiro and the Dinosaur. The first thing I came up with was a museum exhibit. I thought it would do a neat job of explaining the sword and the presence of a prehisotic monster, but, yeah, most dino exhibits don't have skin. It is worth thinking about the possibility of a fictional exhibit however.

*As I said upthread, there is precedent for that kind of thing in comics

Perhaps Hiro, avec le sword, is walking through a dark museum when a dinosaur is suddenly illuminated, startling him and causing him to raise the blade.

Just an idea.

You killjoy Barbeloids, giving us a bad name through lack of imagination! Why not believe in a real Dinosaur theory, rather than some lame copout? We demand more Dinosaurs in our serialised American Tele-fiction!! Quit trying to rationalise it out of existence and believe.

Next thing you'll be telling me that the thing on Lost isn't a Monster, just a swarm of sentient nano-machines (ho-hum), or that the Vampires on Buffy were really just crazy kids hopped up on PCP or Weazle-glands or something.

Mouse
12:20 / 07.12.06
Kids on PCP would have made an awesome "Big Bad" on Buffy

I too believe in the Real Dinosaurâ„¢ theory. If he can't control his power properly, why not send him into the distant past as a gag?

12:37 / 07.12.06
Of course it would seem plausible in terms of Hiro's powers. Was that ever in doubt? My scepticism is based on two things, the very real possibility of misdirection and the SFX budget and production time pressures. Basically, that would be one expensive, time consuming gag. In fact, I can't imagine them doing it as a gag at all. Unlike blockbuster movies, shows like Heroes do not have bottomless reserves of cash, and tend to save their big SFX moments for big narrative payoffs. Unless the dinosaur is in some way essential to the plot, I think there is even more reason to doubt we'll be seeing it.

I should stress, I want to be wrong. I want real dinosaurs as much as the next fanboy. I want to eat the proverbial hat. Want want want want want!

Boboss - Unless the dinosaur is in some way essential to the plot

Dude, dinosaurs are essential to any plot. Nil By Mouth, The Merchant of Venice, The Crucible, Kevin and Perry Go Large... apart from that Jurassic Park movie, which was odd. What's the deal with shoe-horning Dinosaurs into a movie about Chaos Theory, eh?

I believe that either (a) Hiro gets trapped back in time and fights a real dinosaur, which is awesome, or (b) Hiro fights a guy with the power to transform into a dinosaur, which is also awesome.

However, for those cynics of the awesomeness, I present another non-awesome possibility. Considering Hiro and his buddy have so far been on a road trip, they might end up at one of those roadside attractions that have huge fiberglass dinosaurs.

Spaniel
13:55 / 07.12.06
Yup, that's a good idea. I happen to think if awesomeness is not on the cards that the sword is the significant detail of that image.

13:55 / 07.12.06
Yeah, I think the dinosaur will be some fake prop. I'm a cynic due to the underwhelming nature of the Sylar/Peter Petrelli battle. After all the set-up, all the paintings that hinted at some grand confrontation, all it was (as others have pointed out) was a quick tussle that really explored none of the powers available to either character. Since Peter can absorb the powers of others, his battle with Sylar should have been huge. Who knows, maybe it will be in a future episode, once he's gotten a firmer handle on his absorbing abilities.

gridley
14:30 / 07.12.06
While I agree that the writers used a lot of grease for very little sizzle, I see the Peter/Sylar battle as just setup for their future battle(s), which I assume will be more epic in scope, because Peter will have some clue what he's doing at that point.

Spaniel
14:35 / 07.12.06
I don't think full on super brawls are gonna be common on this show for all kinds of reasons.

In other news, one thing that Sylar and Peter's collision spelt out pretty clearly is that Peter is made of the moral stuff of supermen in that he's prepared to sacrifice his own life for others. Peter may be full of self-doubt but he's the superman of the bunch, I reckon.

Another possibility for Peter's relationship with Claire is a kind of brother and sister set-up, perhaps growing into a stronger romantic plotline at some point in the future.

a lot of grease for very little sizzle

But yeah, I totally agree with that.
