Our Lady Has Left the Building
12:38 / 22.04.06
There's some gumf of the Face of Boe written by RTD in the 'Doctor Who-Monsters and Villains' book, most of it now chimes with what we were told in 2.01, a few other things of possible interest:

There is evidence that he was present when the stars of Andromeda were still nothing but dust... no-one knows if the face can die, possibly not even himself, it's as though he lives by will alone, on the integrated planets of Cep Cassalon he is known as 'the Creature that God Forgot', his children all lived a normal span of forty years, legend has it that if he dies the sky will split assunder and of course, has one final secret that he will one day tell to a homeless wandering traveller.

I watched "The Long Game" last night and have come away a bit confused. What happened to Mickey, Rose's old boyfriend? Did something happen to him in "Dalek" that I missed?

Horrible moment just then... Sheena (the dog) chewed through the broadband cable AGAIN... twenty minutes before Who comes on!!!
Fortunately the damage to the last one she chewed wasn't so bad, so as long as I can hold the thing together, I have internet and telly. Pray for me, people.

Kali- you'll see Mickey again. No spoilers, but you will.

Kali, nothing happened to Mickey in 'Dalek', in fact he didn't even appear.

A Bad Wolf reference. Woot! And was there also Torchwood mentioned? Double Woot!

Another crashed spaceship? Naughty Russell, otherwise, prefering this to last weeks offering.

That was cool... Brotherhood of the Wolf transposed to Victorian Scotland from mediaeval France, with a bit of The Thing thrown in!
And the birth of the Torchwood Institute...
Kick-ass Queen V ruled in more ways than one, and the wolf was really fairly spectacular.
Me likey.

I enjoyed it, but, while it's fresh in my mind...

Mild spoilers?

... Are we given to assume that after the Wolf-thing is neutralised that the Monks on the grounds disappear?

"Lads, we've stood around here for six hours now with these nice rifles, what do you think's going - Ooh! Look! Bright Sparkly Lights! Ah, well, let's go home, I'm bored now."

Granted, the No-prize is probably that they melted away onto the mist when they discovered their leader was dead and their Wolf neutralised, but, still, a shot of them skulking off in a suitably-cool-monkish-manner wouldn't have gone amiss - unless I missed something.

So, that's the the origin of The Torchwood Institute and spin-off series... nice. Oh, and, "Doctor beware"? Could be trouble in store for the timelord, eh? Don't mess with Queen Vic.

Plus, there was the continued (Bad) Wolf references: e.g. Werewolf to Rose: "You've tasted it too. You've got something of the wolf about you."

Overall, not a bad episode, really. Yeah, I'm still not convinced by Tenant and Piper (you could say, I wasn't amused), but with all these hints at bigger story-arcs, I'm certainly excited.

I hope RTD isn't setting up Torchwood as people who perceive the Doctor as a threat, even if the PM now doesn't like the Doctor either it would be tricky to finagle an explanation for old fans as to why they didn't go for him all those years he worked for UNIT. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Our Lady Has Left the Building

Hmmm, good point Feverfew. Alternatively, they slinked off assuming their work was done and the Wolf had got to the Queen. It's a bit odd also that the Doctor didn't force the issue. Kill the wolf but not worry that it may have achieved it's objective? Slack non? I wonder if that whole thing of enjoying the danger too much is going to gnaw at the Doctor/Rose relationship any. But a vast improvement on last week.

Actually, the more I think about it... the wire-fu stuff... that actually WAS Brotherhood Of The Wolf, wasn't it?
Still a fucking wicked episode, though. As a standalone it had all it needed... and enough hints at the Big Picture to make it a coherent part of Something Larger.
Quality.

Sorry to veer the discussion off the new episode--remember I am completely and totally envious--but I have one more question about "The Long Game."

Shouldn't there be an explanation as to why Rose has acquired an all-new boyfriend? It never gets explained and it's driving me mad.

I enjoyed it - I just had that fridge-door question stuck in my head. In my humblest opinion, though, it felt like they were still feeling things out, somehow - the rapid cuts/shots of Tennant figuring out the Mistletoe conundrum and mussing up his hair irked me, a little.

For me, and maybe only me, the most enjoyable part of Dr Who is the sudden 'clicking' sound whenever there's an answer, somewhere, and someone finds it - it's not usually done in an "Oh, stupid viewer, that was in front of you all along" style, rather an affectionate "He may be a time-travelling, occasionally shapeshifting interdimensional being, but he has to figure out things too" way. Which is why this week, I liked the Mistletoe, but last week, I really didn't go for the 'Mix-all-the-cures and let them touch each other' explanation.

I'm going to go, now, before I Stop Making Sense...

(He's Adam, he got on board in 'Dalek', he's not really her boyfriend. See season 1 thread...)

Loved this episode - as Stoatie says, it did the "totally self-contained, totally nodding to/hinting at bigger things" very well. One of the best paced episodes so far, actually - didn't feel like there was either too much going on or too little - just the right amount, i.e. a LOT. (The monks are just flunkies, and flunkies always run away at the end.)

I think the Torchwood question is pretty simple, really. Torchwood has a totally different agenda from the Doctor, as we have already seen in 'The Christmas Invasion'. Torchwood exists to protect and advance the interests of the United Kingdom. The Doctor's agenda may overlap quite often (i.e., every time he saves Earth), but not always, and sometimes it may even conflict.

It would be wrong of me to start a Torchwood anticipation thread when there's about one casting photo to talk about so far, wouldn't it?

RE: Torchwood/UNIT... it's not really unheard of for government departments to hate each other and refuse to share info etc... (perfect example being where I work, doing press monitoring- we have all manner of government departments as clients, despite the existence of GICS, which basically does what we do but in-house. Having asked a few people, it really does boil down to different departments not liking each other).

Thanks for the link, Flyboy. I'm a sucker for this kind of thing. i.e. making the world of the narrative bigger using other texts/websites/etc. Done well, it can create an added sense of reality and complexity -- which is why it's a shame they provided footage from today's episode for the website's "mysterious monks" link. Mind you, I liked this (my italics):

"Torchwood House is located next to the Glen of Saint Catherine.

Flash photography and the use of video recording equipment are not permitted anywhere in the House or grounds. Photo ID may be requested on arrival."

Also, I think Stoat's right, that "it's not really unheard of for government departments to hate each other and refuse to share info etc.." And as Flyboy reminds us, there's no reason why the Doctor and Torchwood shouldn't have a complicated relationship, and government departments and Timelords aren't always going to agree on a course of action (Re: 'The Christmas Invasion'.) I imagine Torchwood is going to be a kind of X-files affair, with many factions, shadowy puppet masters, sub-plots, etc, more dark and moody than Dr Who.

I wonder if that whole thing of enjoying the danger too much is going to gnaw at the Doctor/Rose relationship any.

Interesting point, But I'm a Lady! With Flowers! Maybe Queen Vic is right to be wary of their thrill-seeking natures. It also ties in to what was said up-thread about the lack of Time War guilt in the new Tenant Who. i.e. Is the Doctor repressing his feelings? Should we (i.e. Torchwood) be concerned about a potential Dr Who Time-bomb?

Second Byrne for the Doctor, well, a young Byrne probably...

Nothing much to add really, except rather enjoyed it as a stand-alone episode also. After the brief, fleeting, tantalising shot of the Doctor in specs during the first episode, nice to see him with them on for a bit longer. Any clever person know what make of glasses he was actually wearing or how to find out? They were awfully nice.

Stoats - Me too.

Fly - Great link. Although I have a problem with the Monk Montage being set to "Pump it" by the Black Eyed Peas, but that's probably an entirely personal issue.

I liked this episode a lot more than the season opener - and I still like Dr Who overall - but I'm still not totally sold... From the trailer to next week, though, there's the magic three words; Mild spoiler, maybe...

Anthony. Stewart. Head. That is all.

Sarah. Jane. Smith.

Which, in turn, is beaten by

K9 was such a let-down for me, at first. I'd read the books before seeing any of the series, and had K9 down, right, as a *really cool robot dog*... oh, the horror of seeing the grim reality! Although I think the little tyke is beginning to grow on me. If he suddenly grows a levitation plate and starts e-le-vating - or something similar - will it not be splendid?

Never or Now!
21:22 / 22.04.06
Dear Jesus in Heaven,

Please give "K9" no more than three or four seconds screen time, and for Your Father's sake don't let him speak. "Master! Affirmative!" Fuck that shit, Jesus.

Yours sincerely,

-y'know who.

PS HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTHM STICK! Lyncanthropy as the reason for Royal bloodsports... *That* I can cope with.

This was thankfully a huge improvement on last week's episode. The humour was more restrained and as a result a lot funnier. I still cringed at some moments, especially when the Doctor and Rose got all huggly and giggly. Let's hope their relationship gets a bit more complicated with the re-introduction of two old companions next week and that we'll see a slightly jealous Rose.

Anyway, back to this week. The music wasn't as intrusive as last week and some compositions were (shock) subtle! I especially liked the piece of music when we first see the Torchwood estate from a distance. The CG was great this week, probably with as convincing a wolf-effect as is seen in the third Harry Potter movie.

Yay! I heart Doctor Who once again!

Shouldn't there be an explanation as to why Rose has acquired an all-new boyfriend? It never gets explained and it's driving me mad.

Well, the fact that she left Micky to gallivant around the universe with Christopher Eccelstone might suggest that she is not necessarily the most constant lover. She meets a nice young man in Dalek, he is a different experience again from Mickey and the Doctor, he gets invited along as a potential companion in a number of senses, he flunks it. Easy as that, I think.

Again, Haus, I missed that episode. It just seemed that I turned my back for a split second and there you go, new guy.

So when the Doctor refers to Adam as Rose's new boyfriend, I was caught very off-guard.

Am I forgiven? (Knowing Haus, prolly not.)

Oh, that's just the Doctor being jealous. He's not _actually_ her boyfriend, in the way that Micky is.

Not that this will, be overtly explained in the new series, as I believe the UN aren't to keen on their name being taken in vain. UNIT will be used as an acronym, but never explained...
