Wasn't "Population Explosion" at JJ's art show? For some reason I never clocked her for the artist, can't think why.

It's her benefit show ("Action For Africa"), yeah. None of the artists are named. She points to a painting of a woman crying and says "'You broke my heart.' I love his work.", but that seems like a pretty simple Lichtenstein homage image.

The Population Explosion thing has felt significant from the get-go, but it could just be a throwaway gag. The clowns in it are trampling over other dismembered clowns. Makes me think of the Joker's daydreaming in 676, the airborne Joker toxin infecting the planet.

Also makes me think of that idea thrown out (I swear amypoodle posted it to Mindless Ones, but I can't find it) about how the Joker's mind is like a living disease, that it can breed.

Natural Poodle threw it into his Harlequin post.

Personally I think Population Explosion has everything to do with the virus in 676.

attention conservation notice: more on behind the scenes at DC editorial, so skip if not interested.

despite taking more [unfair, IMO] shots at FINAL CRISIS, Lying In The Gutters has this week tries to link Chuck Dixon's recent departure from DC to Morrison's work + bat-editors' micromanagement and takes a guess at who'll be under the mask in the near future.

The LITG column also has great big honking Doctor Who spoiler images, so watch out for that.

No Batman #681 solicitation for September... We'll have to wait til October. At least.

Why "at least"? Do you have some special reason to be pessimistic?

We get two Batcomics in July, Mmm... Freitas. Don't be a slave to the bat.

Do we? Oooh good.

Spaniel
09:09 / 23.06.08
It's Darkseid. I'm tellin' ya.

He's got black gloves, he's got a mate called Jezebel, he's the only character I can imagine the Joker deferring to, he's kinda the devil, he's currently all over the DCU, he's running high stakes superhero slugfests for high-rollers over in Teen Titans, other stuff that I can't think of right now.

Darkseid.

MFreitas
09:36 / 23.06.08
Yes, Boboss. That would be tremendously shocking...

And nope, there won't be 2 Bats in July. This week's issue has been delayed til next week and the same happens with the one appointed for the last week of July, who's going to be published in August now.

Here's a thought that popped in my head waking up this morning.

What if the Black Glove is a tulpa, created by that ritual Bruce did in Nanda Parbat? It's an idea Grant has played with before....

Spaniel
09:48 / 23.06.08
It's Darkseid. Morrison has said it's obvious, and that's about as obvious as you can get. So, no, I wouldn't describe it as shocking, but done right it could work well.

Freitas, stop ruining my anticipatory fun with all your achul fax of reality talk. If I just meditate hard enough perhaps I can create a tulpa issue!

I think we'll find that what happened this month happens in July - it seems as thought the Bat-comics are just being shifted over by a week.

Sorry, Boboss, by now that you've begged for it, I'll do even worse... FOR I AM THE BLACK GLOVE! (insert korny laughter)

Darkseid will not be involved, for fairly obvious and non-spoilery reasons.

Yeah. It shouldn't need to be said, but it does.

Darkseid.

the Tulpa theory is cool, believable and also takes the title close to DOKTOR SLEEPLESS, which is fine...

also close to Spidey's CLONE SAGA, which is not thaaat cool.

let's say the Black Glove top boss is Bruce Wayne... which Bruce would he be? the tulpa or the original?

Mario
22:27 / 23.06.08
Almost certainly the tulpa. All those negative emotions, incarnate in a pseudo-living body.

The name Black Glove could be a hint... dark, but basically hollow.

H3ct0r L1m4
01:44 / 24.06.08
the "negative" bit is pretty interesting... Bruce being confronted by Jezebel, who negates all that he's held certain all this time, ripping him appart as a sliced fruit skin. feels like a FILTH issue sometimes.

The Falcon
17:06 / 24.06.08
Martha Wayne is the Black Glove; she wears them to cover the needletracks from the H - the tulpa thing would be, well it would be nothing if not repetitious, call him Thomas Wayne, Jr. if you like, I suppose, but really New X-Men and FF:1234 probably played that one out a bit. And JLA: Earth-2, really all the JLA stuff.

Ladies' glove, reckon. All this listing the suspects - Thomas Sr., Bruce, Alfred - in the last ish is pure smokescreen.

(big reveal leaked at GM's site. Boy, you people were wrong. Lots of spoilers)

"INT. BATCAVE. NIGHT. BLACK&RED.
THIS IS IT. BATMAN'S EYE IS AS THOUGH A RED MOON ON HIS VELVET-NIGHT BLACK MASK, THE ASHES OF THE CORPSE LIKE STARS. HE PUTS ON THE BLACK GLOVE. "ONLY THE BLACK GLOVE CAN OPEN THE BLACK BOOK", THE CAPTION SAYS. THE BOOK OPENS LIKE THE BOULDER IN NANDA PARBAT'S CAVE, LIKE A MOON GETTING FULLER, A TUNNEL BEING WIPED AWAY BY LIGHT.

FULL PAGE: CLOSE ON BATMAN'S SHOCKED FACE LOOKING DOWN ON THE BOOK (IN OUR DIRECTION) SAYING "BUT THAT'S ME SAYING BUT THAT'S ME SAYING BUT THAT'S ME SAYING" UNTIL THE BOTTOM END OF THE PAGE CUTS AWAY. cuts to:

KRISTAN: Hi, I'm Kristan. Come on in. Grant is in the shower, I'm writing now.

BATMAN: I'm Batman. Animal-Man told me once of this. You're the writer?

KRISTAN: Just the good bits. Come on in.

GRANT (OFF FRAME): Hon, how about an AnimalMan-type of ending? Please? He'd break through into our neighborhood with a new batmobile that can do a bunch of cool stuff! Could be good mojo for our car. Or some glove. I've been wanting some gloves. (ENTERS FRAME, BLACK TOWEL ON WAIST) Hey! Bruce! Give me some love! (ARMS OPEN)

BATMAN: No.

GRANT: C'mon (TRYING TO HUG; BATMAN FIGHTS OFF)! C'mon, stop being so uptight already, gimme a hug. C'mon!

BATMAN: No. Arr. Stopit! NO GODDAMNIT! ... Tsc. Great, now I'm wet.

GRANT: Now you understand. Your journey is complete. You are cleaned. Jubilate in your purification. There is no goosing. Here, have my Black Towel. Now will you give me lots of money if I don't hug you now?

BATMAN: Uuuurrrrrggghhh...

GRANT: You stop that right now mister, or I'll write you out of your current assholeness.

BATMAN GIVES NAKED GRANT A BIG HUG AND A HUGE TWO BILLION DOLLARS CHECK."

On Comics Bullettin, two reviewers came up with the theory the prose issue (#663) could be a sort of pulp tale written by Alfred based on Batman's description of that case.

But then I thought: who writes the black casebook in the pulp style Alfred likes to read? Exactly: Bruce Wayne!
I think that issue is just part of the Black Casebook thus justifying the pulpish, even sometimes corny, style of the storytelling.

Any thoughts?

Mario

I heard a similar explanation for issue #666

Spaniel
15:29 / 25.06.08
Well, unless something within the text works to bolster the argument, it pretty much has to filed under quality fanwank.

MFreitas
15:37 / 25.06.08
Yes, I can't see how 666 could fit.

But with 663, it kinda becomes obvious why Morrison used such a writing style. As Wayne himslef says:

"I write it in that self-conscious, hard-boiled style Alfred likes to read."

The Natural Way

Perhaps the 'devil' referred to by Damian is Darkseid. We could be looking at some ugly, rampaging homunculus universe that hopefully will never be!

since Morrison hinted that his site *is* about to have a major revamp, I thought at first that you were serious about that.... anyway, the parody was well done. Batman fighting off a hug - classic!

guys over at Comic Bulletin's Silver Soapbox column make a round up of all the crazy theories, similarly to what we've been doing here - and include some possible extra info [still haven't read it, i'm off to bed now]

That's actually the "similar explanation" I mentioned earlier. I'd forgotten where I'd read it.

although he couldn't say much about further chapters of the storyline, there's some interesting peripheral info there.

BAT-BAM!!

Preview for Rainbow Batman issue.

Autobio meets Batman - Morrison never thought he'd be 'ingesting hallucinogens' as research and having 'encounters with alien beings...' when he was but a wee lad -- nor did young Bruce Wayne. Ditto "the line between fiction and reality" getting blurred...
