From Newsarama:

"In an unexpected announcement at the DC panel (though not coming as a complete surprise), it was just announced Grant Morrison will be the next regular writer of Batman, following James Robinson’s eight-part story arc running through that title and Detective beginning in March.

Though not announced or even confirmed, popular rumor and speculation still holds that one of the DC exclusive Kubert brothers will eventually be announced as his artist.

Morrison said that he’s already plotted 15 issues, and in his first issue alone, he has 15 ninja man-bats as well as Talia, and the story is called “Batman & Son”. Morrison said Batman coming out of 52 OYL will be a more of a “fun guy, more healthy”, more like the “Neal Adams, hairy-chested, love-god” version of Batman."

Lets hope he doesn't kill himself with all this hard work.

Oh, and THIS!

Would it be irredeemably sad of me to say that this is a little dream come true?

How?

You don't really like Batman, Boboss. You just think you do because The Man keeps telling you you do. But if you really think about it, you'll see I'm right.

I am stunned.

News so awesome from out of nowhere.

Best Writer + Best Character = A Freaking Mindgasm.

DC is really doing things right. Infinite Crisis is kind of fun, but my favorite parts of the whole thing have been all of the Batman bits: OMAC Project, The Joker taking out a bunch of The Society...etc. I really don't give a damn about Power Girl.

And you Batman haters...(Qalyn)...What is up with you? Batman owns.

Seriously though, I can't wait to see GM's take on The Scarecrow.

Not entirely out of nowhere. The rumour's been kicking around for quite a while.

me = happy. As has been said, favourite write on favourite character means I'm one happy fanboy. DC really is looking after us at the mo, aren't they?

I do think it'll be a bit weird if Mozza's Batman is radically different from how he is now, but I guess it's OYL, so I can forgive. I just hope the 'brightening' is done gradually, or with some reason, not simply becuase there's a new writer and they want to do a character this way. The tonal shift is always a bit unsettling as a reader, and shows a fair bit of arrogance on the side of writers.

But I bet this'll be cool.

Tonal shift tonalshitft. Well written Bats is rather a lot more important, IMO.

I hope there is a scene like the on posted in the mythology thread, with slick disco hopping bruce and big sideburn clark hangin out, hitting the cobles, and rapping.

I like the complimentary angles DC has decided to give the Batman books OYL:

Batman --> Morrison --> Large-scale superhero madness
Detective --> Dini --> Quieter, more grounded mysteries

It ought to demonstrate the character's range in a striking way and give each book its own identity and feel. I've never bought any Batman comic on a regular monthly basis ever, and now suddenly it looks as though I'm going to be buying two.

i was at the panel today, and it was quite funny when this information was leaked, with DC staffers scrambling to see if that information was okay to leak, then finding out it wasn't, and morrison getting cagey at the mere mention of it.

at his spotlight q&a later, morrison declined to speak of it further, laughing it off.

Oh, yeah, Batman "owns"... the means of production. Who does that multi-millionaire industrialist think he is, driving over to the bad part of town and beating up poor people?

Batman's approach to superheroing is the lamest possible approach, okay? Money!=superpower.

I mean, goddam, how many people here have even read Rick Veitch's Bratpack? Show of hands? You people aren't even entitled to a Grant Morrison Batman until you've done your homework.

Let's be honest here: While still being a comic book character, Batman is a much more reasonable and realistic superhero as opposed to say...Superman?

"Oh, sorry Lois, I can't save you because some idiot threw green rocks at me."

Now that's lame.

Yeah, but post-Frank Miller Batman is so...republican. He lives a sad and lonley life with all his money and protects the middle class from the horrors of the world. I'm looking forward to the lighter 50's Batman who has rainbow costumes and fights aliens and has sex with superheroines. That's the kind of fantasy world kids and 40-year-old men should be living in.

More lame is....

"Sorry, I can't save the world; my powers only last an hour."

"Sorry, I can't stop that runaway towtruck: it's yellow in colour."

"I can't beat you, mugger because I'm only two inches tall."

GM + Batman = cream in my jeans.

"Oh, sorry Lois, I can't save you because some idiot threw green rocks at me" is fun.

"My parents are dead and now I'm going to sulk for a while" has gotten boring.

I think you're comparing Silver Age Superman with Dark Age Batman. The comparison would more likely be

"Oh, sorry Lois, I can't save you because some idiot threw green rocks at me"

with

"Sorry, Kathy, I can't make our date tonight because Robin and I have another 'date"... with the Venusian Batman."

Holy conniptions, Batman. I was just goofing around, but I have uncovered a trough of madness.

Ah, realism. This is sort of a digression, but you know what I like about Daredevil? It's not that he's a lawyer who beats up poor people--even though I think that's hilarious--it's that, though he is, originally at least, a Batman clone, all of his best stories are about how he does everything wrong. A Daredevil story is about Daredevil fucking up. Now that's realism, my friend.

Anyway, the Grantlord. Surely if you can't appreciate the silly side you haven't been enjoying his work lately and don't have much to look forward to w/his Batman.

What is the linked red X image above?

Also, it's nice to hear that Grant is the 'regular' Batman writer - as opposed to 'X amount of issues and then he's done' that seems to be in vogue lately. '15 issues or more' sounds good to me. We don't hear the term 'new regular writer' all that often today when top creators are concerned, it seems to me.

To clarify, I'm not even all that anti-Batman. I just think that there've been plenty of great stories about a dark and serious Batman (Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, DK Returns) and am not so sure that another psychoanalysis or whatever would make all that great of an impression. Which is why I'm glad that Godchild Mothra seems to be taking a different spin on Batman for his upcoming run.

Here's my point-We've seen plenty of good writers do a brooding Batman. Now I'd like to see an intelligent writer do a good story about the Batman closer to the 60's TV show or crappy Shumacher movies.

Spaniel

I think you'll find it's gonna be closer to 70s Bats.
