Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
23:42 / 19.04.08
Maybe he won't be disempowered. Maybe he just won't be Superman any more. Maybe we won't need Superman as much anymore.

Maybe we'll have Superman but Superwoman as well, full-time.

I keep forgetting that Superman definitely lives to 1000000AD to become Golden Yin-Yang Superman, as seen in the Death of Jonathan issue. Which is probably a testament to how good George is as a writer, that I still think Kal's might die despite the fact that we've been shown he won't.

It also means The Natural Pigs are right. Superman ain't getting depowered either.

As for Superman not being Superman. Montezuma is playing with middle-age, death and inheritance themes. What if the gear he gave to Leo leads to the creation of All-Star Superboy, Connor Kent, finally allowing Kal and Lois to move forward, settle down (as much as Superman and Superwoman can) and have kids?

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Lot can happen in a billion years. He can die and be reborn. Kryptonian death -- at least when influenced by a yellow sun -- is a bit different from human death.

But, point taken -- he's very good at making us doubt the outcome even when showing us flat-out that survival is to be had. And without even mentioning the phrase "possible future."

Maybe he really ends up as the Unknown Superman for a while.

Maybe the Unknown Superman from #2 was Lois in drag, having hit a midpoint stride in her career as Superwoman (living for centuries, of course). The Unknown Superman has been shown to be a ficsuit for Supermen to talk to themselves in the past...

Good ideas. It's all very exciting innit.

Speaking of having kids, Lex has had one, sort of, in the form of his polylingual protege.

So, basically, All-Star Superboy vs Nastalthia, pleasethanks.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

I still think I'd rather -- and keeping in mind the Superboy legal decision -- see Supergirl, either Kara Zor-El or Kara Kent, daughter of the Superclan, show up at the very end over Kon-El or Connor or whatever. Particularly if Nasty was a prior Supergirl villain.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Andrew Hickey points out a parallel I hadn't noticed when I read Number Ten: And the last we see of him, he's stretching out his hand to us. But unlike Zatanna, he isn't reaching out for our help, but even when he knows he's dying he's reaching out to help - to cure sick children, because that's what Superman does.

It's a small detail, but I like the parallel and have to wonder -- based on the way it breaks the panel -- if that was the intention.

(Largely pointless post of excitement below. Haus, you should ignore this post.)

Finally reading that CBR Superman interview and "So I wanted to do that one. And there is another one set in the far, far future with the Superman Squad."

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Is ASS #11 really solicited for the 28th of May? Seems awfully soon.

I know. I kneep checking the DC site to see if they've changed the release date. They haven't yet.

Here's hoping.....

Before I forget this again: my second favo bit in ASS#10 is during the meeting between Quin-Tum (love it) and the Council of Kandor. At some point in the debate Leo sits down and you can see him crashed/pressed into the back of the chair while all the others ignore the super-gravity of the bottle. A (literally) tiny detail but great.

I just read in the free newsprint giveaway Comic Shop News that Grant Morrison will be writing a Final Crisis Superman one-shot called Final Crisis - Superman: [something I can't remember] with art by Aaron Lopresti, and it will be all in 3D (according to Dan DiDio). This is news I haven't seen mentioned anwyhere else, so I thought it worth mentioning... it is the first instance in a long time of Grant writing an entire Superman book that is non-All Star-Supes.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

You know, if all goes according to plan the 28th is going to be an awesome day. I really hope it isn't pushed back. I wonder if iamus or Jamie can comment on the issue's current status vis-a-vis printing?

For me the key moment was when Superman tells Luthor that he's won, the Superman was going to die and that he could now be the great man he always claimed he could only be if Superman wasn't standing in his way... And Lex proves that Lex was always completely full of shit. Even in losing, Superman wins.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
16:32 / 08.05.08
I'm stuck on the Lois/Clark exchange, actually. Lois, trapped in the clutches of the lunatic Mechano-Man, just shrugs a don't ask when Clark's trying to save her. Always a romantic comedy. I imagine this is a good chunk of their interactions with each other, Lucy and Ricky, even with big bad robot men everywhere...

The solicitation date is probably a safe bet. Frank's already into the next issue and Jamie's finishing up to send off either tonight or tomorrow.

They powered through this one with gusto because... well... it's exciting!

Geez. Wow. And CASANOVA is out next week. This is going to be the best May ever.

Is anyone keeping count of his twelve super challenges?

Done:

Answering the unanswerable question
Escaping from the underverse
Chaining the chronovore (as the "unknown superman" - meaning he will travel in time in #11 or #12!)

To be done:

Overcoming Solaris
Creating life

What more?

He's created life. That was one of them.

Sorry, you included that one.

You just missed it actually happening.

He already traveled in time. In #6, that was the actual time travel, Unknown Superman was actually the present ASS Superman.

I feel pretty certain Morrison won't enumerate the Twelve Labours beyond maybe a few. I doubt it'll come up neat and tidy.

I also feel like saying that it's still brilliant and beautiful if Leo Quintum isn't on the up-and-up - Superman will forgive him. If he's involved with Luthor, Supes may already even know it; trusting him despite it and counting on Quintum's better nature to win out in the end.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

You mustn't say such things about Mister Quintum! He's a good man. A good man.

Superman's just so...super.

joy!!! Lex firing what appear to be Kryptonite beams, with what is undoubtedly Solaris the Tyrant Sun in the background, merrily destroying Metropolis. Supes reduced to fighting with a gun! Only sad that this is the final Morrison/Quitely issue... but we know more All-Star Supes is coming in the form of a special. Plus, there's the Morrison-written regular DCU/non-All Star version of Supes Final Crisis: Superman Beyond one-shot, which Doug Manhke (not Aaron Lopresti, as incorrectly reported by Comic Shop News) is drawing, complete with a 3D section (it doesn't sound like the entire book is in 3D as also originally & erroneously reported). The Manhke cover is somewhere in previews... looks cool but it's a basic and otherwise unremarkable shot of Supes flying.

weird that the 12 Works get mentioned again. wasn't this concept dropped a while ago?

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
03:09 / 20.05.08
A*S covers always induce some sort of reaction in my naughty parts.

Interesting parallel to the cover for #2, which goes back to this being a love story (Poor Lois! When she sees that "CK + LL" carved into the tree, she never knows if it's her, Lex Luthor, Lana Lang or Lightning Lad!).

My god, is Eleven still going to be out by the end of the month?

Oh, Solaris. You so sassy.

No, Hector, it wasn't. Reread the last issue again.

I don't know....why other people just can't make sure they've read their ASS 10000000 times by now is completely beyond me.

I've read my ASS 10000000 times and it still amazes me! I can't believe it's only a week til the next issue.

Totally excited for Superman:Beyond as well. Doug Mankhe is one of those artists that I feel Morrison works with really well, a la Cameron Stewart and JH Williams.

And it has a 3D section! It's a first for GM and I can't wait to see what he does with it! The Alan Moore LXG:Black Dossier 3D bit was pretty underwhelming, so I'm hoping GM can utilize it to its fullest potential.

And, no, Andrew, you're wrong. The Black Dossier 3D bit was awesome on so many levels. Quiet now. Bad Drilon.
