a new thread for discussing the actual series, when it comes out, since the previous and now-locked thread on the subject derailed into madness after new info on the title stopped appearing.

to moderators: don't know if you're OK with a topic per issue [though a single topic won't probably be enough for the the full run], so feel free to change it.

I did see a solicitation in print (in Comic Shop News or something) where they mentioned that issue 2 would have Supes taking Lois to the Fortress of Solitude, or something like that.

Neal Adams Variant for #1 here

It's the opposite of the FQ one. Completely joyless and unnecessary.

Okay, so the cover isn't actually what scientists refer to as "good", but Superman's cape billowing down between his legs makes it look like he has a mighty Super-Nutsack, and that's bound to shift a few units.

rrrrrrrreally cool!

seems they're going for a 50s/60s version of the Fortress of Solitude, rather than the New Age-y crystal-ice one from the movies - including the upcoming RETURNS.

also... Krypto-Dildo!

Great cover - it's nice to see an attractive Lois that's not drawn like a Jim Lee clone/Danger Girl female.

And verrry spooky image with Supes -- or IS it really Supes??

So could someone tell me what the deal is with the Superlogo? I know Quitely rounded of the top serif, and that caused and uproar in some arenas. Then Tom wrote an article about it on plastikbag. Then I sat and to design a mark. Then "new" images come out of A-S:S#1 wirth what looks like redrawn linework over the original, making me question whether the new Superlogo was retracted, and DC now has equity in an antiquated design, or what?

Where's Lois' chin?

Dammit, Quitely, I need more chin!

What it seems like is that Grant & Frank proposed a new S logo for this series, DC took them seriously for a while but at the last minute decided their iconic trademark S was too precious to change at all, esp. for a title aimed at readers who maybe aren't super comic book fans (the whole 'these are the Classic versions of the characters that the average man/woman on the street know' approach to the All-Star line).

Similar things happened right before Greg Rucka took over Wonder Woman, the artist had designs that were shown in various comics news magazines that would change Diana's costume, take away the star-spangled panties and make them a permanent star-spangled skirt, and make her look more Greek, change her hairstyle a bit. It seemed these were a go until the issue came out and lo and behold, Diana was drawn the way we all know her, the 'classic' WW look. So basically, DC seems very hesitant to change the look of their big 3 characters even in slight ways. (Apparently getting rid of the yellow oval on the Batman in a permanent way doesn't seem to matter much, Batman Begins having solidified that image in the public's mind.)

and yes, they definitely had some art assistant or someone redraw the S over Quitely's original. It doesn't look like Quitely redrew it himself.

Lois no chin - Superman gigantic chin.

Hopefully this won't suck as much as the AllStar Batmam, which is essentially Marv as Bats....

Aertho
15:49 / 28.10.05
That's horrible.

Batman's got a closet full of wonderful toys, and the other two are stuck wearing flags with a terribly designed insignia and jock itch. Ah well.

DC took them seriously for a while but at the last minute decided their iconic trademark S was too precious to change at all

which is just stupid, as it HAS cleary evolved through the decades: ex. 1 - ex. 2

this All-Star outfit [so subtle a redesign to even be called that] was more a homage to the Silver Age look than an our-housebrand-is-dangerously-irrecognizable redesign.

I mean, DC was OK with this muscle madness not long ago, and the new movie look is clearly retro Max Fleisher-ish.

Wow, it totally snuck up on me but it turns out All Star Superman is coming out this week! I just saw it listed on the Diamond website.

This is fantastic, I didn't think it was coming out till next month.

Now, who likes Lex's design? He was choking a high ranking military presence in issue #1 in that goofy looking cyber-suit. I thought it was cool though. That whole living bomb idea was great. I've seen it done before, but the whole several minute delay that meant Luthor had to time his trash talk in advance...That's fun stuff.

Yeah, this comic is just SUPER. The previews were all jumbled as far as the pacing goes, and Morrison has created the best supporting cast in any comic ever with the DNA P.R.O.J.E.C.T. and The Daily Planet. Special Jesus Quintana Achievement Award goes to Jimmy Olsen's all-too brief appearance, especially his jaunty background entrance, the best and most effortless little squiggly bit of cartooning Quitely's ever done.

The pencils don't look as bad as they did in the previews, although maybe I was just too caught up in the story. Either way, everything looks great and, yeah, George wasn't lying when he said Quitely has revoltionized the Kent Persona.

Packed to the gills with insanity and gorgeousness, this is our nation's finest comic book.

It's fabulous! Quitely is at a new peak, and Morrison really delivers, easily blowing away everything else he's written in the past couple years. Very fun, very pop.

I loved the Jimmy Olsen bit, with the random jetpack - or was that supposed to be a backpack? Feh. Superman's Pal should have all the best toys.

The DNA P.R.O.J.E.C.T. was as if they took Cadmus and mixed it with Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Mister Quintum is very Wonka.

Lex Luthor is so utterly Lance Harrower. "But three months ago, I looked in the mirror at those nasty little spiderwebs of lines around my eyes and I realized something. I'm getting older...and he isn't."

Drama Queen.

SUPER indeed.

Excellent supporting case, each one with a distinct visual identity. The structure was also a feat, Action in front exposition, intrigue, cliffhanger, epilogue and cliffhanger again.... or something to that effect.

Also was that a guest appearance by Dr. Manhattan? Nice archtypical analogue.

Bizarro's as well... there's so much. Not a word was wasted.

The "revised" S logo popped out here & there, but was certainly forgivable.

nice colors...

I liked it. I could quibble a bit about the art, but the little touches (like the triumphant return of Steve Lombard) more than made up for it.

And I want a super-watch.
