I was kind of hoping there was more to it. I just found incredibly frustrating that the hit percentages were so low, and ammo was so hard to find.

It provides XP - that's the main source of XP for Necrotechs. It maybe necessary for zombies to have DNA samples taken before they can be revived, but I'm not sure...

Well, the more you level up, the better your hit percentages get-- and if you're lucky, you'll find plenty of ammo in a police station or armory (keep searching, even after you find nothing for a few turns-- something'll come up). A few days of endless searching provided my cop character (Hip Flask) with four shotguns, six pistols, three or four flak jackets, and a mountain of ammo. Then I went on a killing spree. And now I'm back to searching. Search, search, kill, repeat.

So I can repeatedly search the same area?

Check.

That makes things easier.

Sweet. My new character, Ted Williams, a private, now has a shotgun, pistol and loads of ammo for both. Tomorrow: Killing spree.

I'm still going to use Jakegnosis for brains-eating activities, though.

Shit. I've now pegged it for shelter into a building WITH A FUCKING ZOMBIE IN IT.

I think we all know who wouldn't survive a real-life zombie plague. BALLS.

You're doomed, Stoatie. At least you might get some zombie goodness. And I know you love zombies.

So what's the game-rationale for DNA taking? And if it's something that gets reset at midnight GMT, then why?

I'm having trouble conceptualizing this DNA database in game terms.

I just extracted Richard Feynman's DNA, and I feel just terrible about it. Those wonderful quark diagrams....

For those of you despairing that you'll never get anywhere in this game, I started a month ago and now have one character at level 13 and a second one not far behind. This despite a few missteps at the outset, several days spent moving him around for roleplaying purposes rather than pumping, and of course the recent "storms." As soon as you start acquiring additional useful skills, they begin feeding back into how quickly you can raise your level (in other words, it's sort of the opposite of most RPGs). This holds true regardless of whether you're pursuing a combat-oriented path or a medical or necrotech path. So yeah, if you can avoid being eaten, you too can one day be a bonifide zombie hunter like me. Trading cards coming as soon as we can restore power and get the local presses running again.

I'm assuming that NecroTech is actually responsible for the zombie outbreak in the first place, since their scientists seem suspiciously well-prepared to deal with it. Why else would we all be assigned DNA extractors and be able to find ready-made revivification syringes lying around? If that's the case, I'm sure they view the disaster as a perfect way to study the zombification process. If the same zombies are sampled over a period of time, NecroTech will be able to tell what biological changes are happening and how they're adapting to their new lifestyle. You can also find out whether or not a candidate is suitable for revivification - some zombies have brain rot which prevents the syringes from being effective.

Also, ending up in a building with zombies isn't necessarily the end - I ran out of AP with 4 zombies in the room and hadn't been molested at all when I checked back in 2 hours later. Maybe it was just luck, or maybe they'd already eaten Stoatie and weren't hungry for more.

Experience points if you've got the right training. Basically that's it.

I get the feeling the DNA extraction is supposed to be part tagging program and part on-going analysis of the zombie plague.

I'm wondering how the game will progess from here. Will the living dead slowly decay away (ie more and more APs needed to stand up)? Or is there going to be another swing towards the zombie side? What do people think?

Plenty of living people still around. I get the impression certain areas have become no-go areas due to high numbers of skilled zombies cracking the doors open.

Alan Burgroft, NecroTech employee, is thinking about visiting the City Zoo in Ketchelwood on my way south to Mornington from Yagoton.

Anyone nearby?

The map makes it look quite huge.

I'm in - hiding out in Richmond Hills for a while, until I get some action points to move over to a police station. Fireman Benny the Ball is here - smacked a zombie in the head with an axe for a while, but then had to run. No kills yet, but it's only day two for me.

In most zombie moveis, this would be the point where the survivors start forming possies in order to clense the land of the undead filth*. Unfortunately the closest equivalent to a good burning (Fire! It's God's clenser!) are Necrotech syringes. The Necrotech-skilled amongst us could meet up and start clearing suburbs...

*I've never seen a zombie movie where the zombies could "level up," though. I've lost two safe houses in the past 24 hours, nearly got nibbled to death.

I've been swallowing the spider to catch the fly so to speak. My characters have a high mortality rate, what class of character revivifies zombies? Necrotech employee right?

Raul found a bunch of characters with "00" in their name holed up in... umm... a hospital in the far southwest. Possibly Old Arkham, but maybe one of the suburbs directly north of there.

So there are posses out there gathering in specific turf.

grant - there have been a few gangs - most notably there was a gang/cult that formed around one human character who started attacking his fellow humans... other players took modified versions of his name and emulated his human-killing antics...

Jake, Colossus of Clout

So, should we have some form of Barbelith posse?

Ted Williams has had a very successful killing spree today, and I'm sure his firepower would be an asset to a group of zombie hunters.

On the other hand, Jakegnosis hungers for brains, and any other undead 'lithers could join him and make a fearsome zombie horde.

Benny the Ball
07:25 / 19.08.05
Yeah, let's get posses together, let's get super teams sorted out so that each group is local and using all the skills. I'm in Richmond Hills, and a fireman - anyone near by want to join up, go kill us some of these zombies?

I'm developing Valerie Simpleton into a shootin' machine...

It's interesting that, in the opposite way from most MMORPGs, improving your skills takes less and less time... at the moment I am searching the Police Station for ammo, stepping out and massacring zombies to accumulate XP fairly happily,

My soldier, Ted Williams, is holed up in the Rawkins Row Police Dept.

My Zombie (former soldier), Jakegnosis, hungers for brains, and keeps getting killed and DNA sampled. What's up with DNA sampling, anyway?

Military and scientist characters are easier to level-up than consumers - they start with skills/equipment that aids the gaining of XPs far more effectively than consumers. Consumers also need to gain 100 XPs before leveling up whereas scientists and and military can level up for an inexpensive 75 xps in their own area of expertese...

Also, is it worth starting a 'revive' list for zombie characters wishing to return to life - or are most of our zombies quite happy with their new found lot in life?

Evil Scientist

Currently there doesn't seem to be any detrimental effect for the zombies getting DNA sampled. But it's possible that this increase in APs needed for zombies to Stand Up might be because Necrotech's getting a lot of information on the pathology of the infection. Get Brain Fever asap is my advice for zombies, that'll pre-empt any Necro sponsored clearance programs.

Hungry Dan currently in transit towards Roachtown where I plan to hook up with my brother and a friend's zombie characters. Any who wish to join the Hungry Army are more than welcome.

Howling Dan's heading in the opposite direction, currently on the border of Nixbank in a Necrotech builidng. Shot a zombie down who'd wandered into the neighbouring police station then dumped his twitching corpse outside and la parkoured it into the heaviliy barricaded building next door. Managed to boost my HtH skills now, so ammo shortages will be less of a problem. Either Construction or Axe Fighting next.

You know what these zombies remind me of? The ones from that quality 80's splattergore film "The Video Dead". You can't actually kill them, but after you shoot them a couple of times they think they're dead and fall over for a while.

No no no! Don't get Brain Fever yet! What you want to do is munch happily on brains until you get revived. Once you get your breathing back on build up XP til you can procure a flak jacket and the Body Building skill. You'll be the toughest Zed in town!
