More IC from Rich Johnston:

>> There's a new "Blue Beetle" book by Keith Giffen on the slates. That news alone gave me an internal tingle that you really don't want to know anything more about.

>> "Wonder Woman" will be kicking off again from issue 1, but this isn't your dad's reboot. All the Countdown miniseries will get "Infinite Crisis" specials.

Giffen is about the only person who can write Ted Kord and make him fun, human and heroic.

That image is so much better than the Jim Lee one, the OMAC'S look great, a real threat.

However, Ted Kord is dead, truly dead. I doubt they will bring him back. A DC panel recently mentioned that Sue Dibny, Max Lord and Ted Kord (hey, they rhyme) are dead as dead can be. Greg Rucka said that Ted had his brain in many tiny little pieces and there was no way he's coming back. (They also mention that Barry Allen will never return unless in a brief story that plucks him out of time before he dies, as Mark Waid and Geoff Johns have done in their FLASH runs.)

So unless DC goes the way of Jason Todd and Marvel's Bucky as 'you thought they'd never come back but guess what, here they are' route, this Blue Beetle will be someone ELSE.

Rumors are that it will be Booster Gold adopting the Beetle ID.

also, I notice that in both Jim Lee and Perez' cover, the JLA watchtower on the moon is either getting blown up or is in ruins...

Unless they go the route of someone finding the scarab a la Dan Garratt, as I think Booster just won't work as Beetle.

They can break every bone in Batman's body, have his heart ripped out, the corpse mauled by rabid dogs, the brain fried by lightning and then the entire of Gotham turned into his funeral pyre. It's not worth wasting any time thinking about. Because somewhere a fan will whine and it'll all be undone. Just as it was the Arrows and Lanterns of the Green variety. Barry Allen would still be Flash if he hadn't bought it back in the days when DC Editorial had a spine.

Wasn't Impulse killed during Our Worlds At War? I mean, I'm not surprised to hear that he is back now, if that's the case, but did he actually die in 'OWaW' and has been brought back to life, or did he not actually die?

And we have all these 'Countdown' stories, do we know what the actual 'Infinite Crisis' book will be about at the end of this? Some sort of bland superheroes fight each other dealy, or some equally pointless re-stating of 'what it means to be a superhero'?

so...i was reading the Wizard article and trying to figure out exactly what this series is gonna be about and what it's so-called long term effects will be.

i don't know if i'm proposing anything that hasn't been said or rumored before, but doesn't it seem like Wonder Woman is going become some sort of villain in this?

Wouldn't that be ballsy? Take an iconic hero and seriously make them a villain. They did it with Parallax, but then basically made that all go away eventually.

Wouldn't it be great if one of the Big Two did this with one of their characters for real?

What if, say...Batman finally turned into a hardcore villain and stayed that way?

Not gonna happen re: WW or Bats becoming 'bad.'

However, with the JLA storyline currently running plus Villains United, where the newly formed Secret Society of pretty much every major DCU villains is planning to mindwipe all the heroes, I could see a storyline where they try to mindwipe the heroes but the only one they actually successfully mindwipe will be Batman, thus providing the reason for Bruce Wayne to end up at Arkham Asylum for a while while Dick Grayson takes over as Batman when IC ends.

I think IC will be all the heroes vs. all the OMACs plus vs. the Secret Society. IC will begin with the JLA having disbanded and the relationships between the big three very strained. There have also been hints that Braniac and his homeworld of Colu will play a part, and that Power Girl will be a major player somehow, as well as the newly-risen Donna Troy. The Psycho Pirate will somehow be in it as well. We can only hope Ambush Bug will make an appearance more significant than his one panel in the first Crisis.

Oh, by the way, Impulse didn't die in the very boring Our Worlds At War crossover, but Aquaman, Guy Gardner and Steel aka John Henry Irons all 'died' in that story. Hippolyta, WW's mom, died in that story too and has been the only one to stay dead.

Yes and no, but more no than yes.

Back then Impulse had an extra power that allowed him to bring out iterations of himself from out of time (or out of sync from time, or something like that) to help him out. He could pretty much multiply himself as much as he wanted. During OWAW, while the Young Justice Kids were lost in Apokolips, one of the copies died right in front of Impulse, which kinda traumatized him.

And that's what happened.

So, DC really don't like the Giffen era JLA, do they?

*****Spoilers*****

They killed off Rocket Red in OMAC #5. Dmitri sacrifced himself to save the rest of the JLA.
Oh, and Fire was shot in the back, so expect her to be at least crippled for a while.

I thought she was "wraith-like" in her fire-form? Hmm.. one for the DC Surgery thread....

It's almost as if the only way they know to make them heroic is to have them sacrifice themselves. I'm enjoying OMAC though, and thought it was a good bit of JLI team work to take out 3 OMACS.

Don't forget Fire took a spinal injury, too.

OMAC #5 had reall, shockingly bad artwork. Like someone inked Igor Kordey with a sharpie, then coloured it as if an afterthought.

And oh my fucking god, how wank did Black Knight 1 look? Terrible character design.

Hah! No kidding. The art was never the good thing about this title. But wow, shockingly bad woman-cum-cyborg design. If they plan on using her regularly, I hope she gets an upgrade, because I've always liked the Sasha character. What's with the big junkie eye? Reminds me of Tharok! Weird.

And sure Dmitri may have sacrificed his life for the rest of the League, but ten bucks says noone in the League bats an eye over it. At most, he'll get a one panel mention in a list of casualties after it's all over. (By the way, I though he was Rocket Red 8, or was that someone else?)

Totally. It's a very bizarre design, one I would imagine they'll change when the rumored new CHECKMATE series comes out, probably with Sasha at the head of the organization. Maybe they'll pull the old 'she learned how to control her form and morph herself into a less freaky-looking shape' trick.

I thought the eye looked like quite an "old School" design. Deliberatly looking a little shit rather than uber-modern and snazzy.

Maybe not.

They are leaking a bunch of "spoilers" for this series, and sad to say, none of them excite me in the least. In some ways, they are simply turning the clock back to stories that some creators liked when they were kids, and in ways that make the characters even more complicated and convoluted.

Crisis was big because it had a big effect on things, and the deaths were pretty much there to show How Important This Is. While we look back and see that the deaths of the Barry Allen Flash and Supergirl were big deals, at the time, they were pretty much failed characters. Flash had been selling horribly for about 5 years, and the "Trial of Barry Allen" was a 3 year story that was one of the most painful things I suffered through (at the time, I would buy stuff I didn't like in hopes it would have a decent payoff) and Supergirl was unable to sustain a series of her own, and was, at best, a 3rd tier supporting character with a highly moronic backstory.

Sales-wise, the buildup to this is helping DC in a lot of ways, with the four Prequel series bringing in big numbers. And Crisis gave DC a platform to do a lot of very good stories after it was done when the slate was wiped clean. Maybe this will do this too, but I can't hlep thinking that if they just would have used Hypertime properly, they could have had this buzz 5 years ago.

When the hell does this Crisis take place? I've been waiting for over a year. Will it be a brief crossover like "Sacrifice" or a monthly title itself like "OMAC"? Is this going to be a very real Crisis, or does that just describe the state of every hero's life at this time? Come on DC! I'm becoming disinterested.
Oh, and that last issue of Wonder Woman, Batman soooo would have taken her side in the matter of Max's death. Bad writing on Rucka's part.

If you weren't being ironic:
Well there's a 'one month to Infinite Crisis' warning on the previews page of eeeeevery D.C comic out there and the main preview in eeeeevery D.C comic says 'Infinite Crisis #1, October'.
As for whether it'll be a 'brief crossover', well there's one million, three hundred and seventy three thousand, four hundred and seventy two nigh-on indestructable robots in the air, every villain bar six in the DCU has united, all the magic-users (bar the Shadowpact, Zatanna, Dr. Fate, Raven and anybody else who might be missed) have been slaughtered by an indestructable spirit of vengance and the rest of the galaxy is tearing itself apart in an interstellar war to feed the insaitable hunger of a soul-eating Thangarian death god. Should be over by Christmas 'ey chaps?
As for Batman taking Wonder Woman's side: not the Batman I've been reading. He has a strict 'no killing' policy and is absolutely unwavering on it. He hasn't killed the Joker, Black Mask or R'as Al Ghul. He has stated this over and over again (see the most recent issue of Batman for proof). Batman is going to hate Diana for killing Max, and it's going to further drive a wedge between the big three heroes.

SPOILER:

Batman DID tell Wonder Woman to get the hell out of his Batcave after she told him her side of the Max Lord death, which dovetails with him telling Superman the same thing.

And here they finally dropped that stupid 80's plot that Superman and Batman hate each other.

Yes, I don't believe Batman would have killed him, but he should have had a much deeper, wiser understanding of the situation WW was facing. Instead he says, "Get the hell out of my cave!"
I felt they needed at least two more panels to justify that reaction.

from a recent Newsarama interview with George Perez:

>> "They were hoping that I’d be involved with [Infinite] Crisis, but up until signing the contract, I thought my involvement would be minimal at best,” Perez said. “After I signed, they figured they’d take advantage of it, and asked me to do the alternate covers, and I’m also penciling five pages in issue #2 – a scene that recaps the history of the DC Universe in five pages, in order to give it that sequel to Crisis on Infinite Earths feeling. The pages will be inked by Jerry Ordway, reuniting us for a little bit. Marv’s had his crack at Crisis, with the untold chapter, and the novelization, and now the art team gets back together for one last hurrah on the Crisis characters.”

Perez said that DC has also tapped him to work with a very special writer on one of the tie-in issues to Infinite Crisis – a single-issue story in JSA.

“The story is written by Paul Levitz,” Perez said. “We’ve known each other since we were teenagers, and this is the first time we’ve worked together creatively. Bob Wiacek is inking, with Tom Smith coloring. Alex Ross usually draws the covers for JSA, but, due to his own schedule, has asked that I draw the cover to that issue, so I’ll be doing that one. Even my wife will be in on it, because there’s a whole section that’s supposed to be written in shorthand, and my wife, who used to be a secretary, will be doing some of the partial lettering of Paul’s script as a design element. I’m having a great, great time with that one.”

I guess there's more than a few winks to the original Crisis... for those who don't know yet, some of the main characters of Crisis on Infinite Earths have shown up in JSA Classified #2 and Villains United #5, disreputing the claim that it's got nothing to do with the original..

Now they just have to bring back Harbinger and we're fucked.

Rich Johnston reports on the post-IC creative teams at DC:

-----

While we're still waiting for the confirmation of all the LITG-reported DC titles, plot twists and cancellations, we thought we'd add to the list.

"Wonder Woman" is confirmed for a restart from issue 1, with "The OC"/"Young Avengers" writer Allan Heinberg writing and Terry Dodson on art.

And as for "All Star Wonder Woman," Adam Hughes is already two issues into his run written by Geoff Johns.

Dodson and Hughes, each drawing a Wonder Woman title at the same time. Who'd have thought it….

Mark Verheiden and Ethan Van Sciver on "Superman/Batman."

Ivan Reis pencilling "Green Lantern."

Mark Waid and George Perez are intended to be the dream team for a new revived monthly series "The Brave And The Bold."
