post-IC Batman spoilers.... from Lying in the Gutters... looks like one of those post-IC rumors was true...

SPOILERS

>> For those of you who want to know what next year's big Batman arc, coming off of the One Year Gap.....

>> Bruce Wayne has been committed to Arkham Asylum and Nightwing has assumed the mantle of The Batman. Nightwing, however, will continue as an ongoing comic.

How enormously uninteresting. It'll last, at the most, until the next Batman film comes out.

Yeah, I figure Grant Morrison writing Bruce Wayne in Arkham Asylum will be an exercise in masturbatory cosmology and philosophical exploration. But there's no way of knowing until it happens, right? There's no, say, already-published example of Batman of being stuck in Arkham Asylum, written by Grant Morrison? (Voice Raises In Pitch) Maybe one that, that came out 15 years ago? Hm? Critically acclaimed by some? Ruthlessly derided by others? (Voice Raising To An Even Higher Falsettoian Pitch) Originally released in hardcover and then later reprinted in trade paperback? Recently re-released with additional notes by the author? Oh, there's simply no way of knowing for sure, is there.

Well, at least a Kubert's drawing it this time around instead of that hack McKean.

I have a feeling it will only be a Daredevilian ploy to convince everyone that Batman isn't Bruce Wayne. Or maybe it's DCs attempt at replicating Bendis/Maleev's Daredevil run. After all, if word really did get out that Batman is Bruce Wayne, this is most likely exactly what would happen.

But yeah, uh, WHO GIVES A FUCK!

(let me just take the time and energy to hit 'Post Reply'...)

>> Daredevilian

Great adjective.

The whole thing about if it came out about Bruce Wayne being Batman , would propably be ... Abject fear among goverments that a man with that much money and the tactechial genius of Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great , is now not restricted, by a alias he has to manitain and if he becomes a fugative he may very well decided to bring down goverments (this of course is a man who has stopped ALien inavsions and comics destruction oh into double figures, with no powers !).

"Realistcly" they'd play real nice

I have to say though, Grant writing Dick-Grayson-as-Bats, and all the angst and character stuff therein might be pretty cool. With the subplot of Bruce trying to get out of Arkham, this might make for some fun Bat-comics.

That's crap! You can't keep Bruce in Arkham against his will. He's a master escape artist. I like the other ONE YEAR LATER rumor better, where Bruce Wayne, after spending some time in hiding, runs for president.

I think it could be very good, if handled well. I always wanted to see Nightwing take the mantle again. And with Grant on board, it will be interesting at least. Hope this time Dick gets to play a little longer in the suit before Bruce comes to take it from him..

Batman has been a captive in Arkham before. During Alan Grant's days in Shadow of the Bat. He escaped in one issue. Geesh.

I hate to get all fanboy, but I'm with you guys. There is no fucking way that Arkham could hold Batman.

Unless, perhaps, they knew he was Batman? Hence the being locked in Arkham, hence some serious (possibly metahuman) security?
Just a though.

Evil Scientist
10:48 / 29.07.05
Come on. If The Joker and all the rest of the Gotham badhats can break out of Arkham on a regular basis it should be peanuts for Batman. Surely they have loads of metahuman security anyway to contain Killer Croc and Mr Freeze?

Well, there's also the possibility that they lock him away because he gets even crazier than he already was. Maybe he has a nervous breakdown or something.

I don't care if Mr Miracle's his jailer, the Batman I know and love* would get out.

The above is all true, I was just trying to fanwank some sort of rationale for it. Unless, of course, it's like John Constantine's self imposed prison sentence in the Hard Time arc - Batman punishing himself for something he did that he feel he deserves imprisonment in Arkham for...
He certainly seems under a lot of pressure in the Flash issue with Capt. Boomerang's funeral.

well, Wonder Woman just killed Max Lord after having been forced to fight a mind-controlled (by Max) Superman. Lord obviously wanted Diana to kill him so Brother Eye would become autonomous and sentient, therefore leading Brother Eye to initiate its Max-inspired mission to kill all metahumans so average Earthlings will never be in danger of superheroes going crazy, wreaking havoc on the populace, etc.

3 months before IC, but this seems to be the main plot so far- the superheroes of the DCU vs. OMAC, maybe throw in the Secret Society of Superheroes' return for good measure.

Rich Johnston gave a spoiler yesterday for IC - it seems (as many expected) a major character will die and his successor will take over.

Place your bets - I'm at a loss, since it can't be the Flash again (too predictable) and Greens Arrow and Lantern have already died and come back to life/had their successors take over. Who's left? They won't do it to one of the Big Three. Who else is a 'legacy' hero at DC? Hawkman just "died" only to come back after some new character named Golden Eagle took over the Hawkman ID in the pages of his own book...

Perhaps BATMAN fakes his death so he can deal more effectively with his foes OR after realizing DEATH is not a final state being (thanks to the return of Jason Todd) he dies so as to research/explore this state of being.

Actually, the whole JLA have all died once during the OBSIDIAN AGE so there you go.

There's also talk of a new Shazam... perhaps Capt Marvel Jr. gets "reimagined" ala the rumored Grant Morrison project.

mmm--maybe..Aquaman?

Mr Tricks
19:24 / 02.08.05
hmmm... Aquaman has been beaten around so much I just can't quite see his death as really significant. Also his former sidekick Aqualad is now called Tempest, I doubt there's be much success in his adopting the name of Aquaman II.

but you know... we'll see eh.

Batman seems to be pissing a lot of heroes off lately. What if he fakes his death, leaving Nightwing to assume the Bat mantle, and hiding in the last place they'd look for the body: Arkham?

Billuccho!

My bet is on the Atom, or possibly Aquaman.

Or maybe even Wonder Woman (Donna Troy's back, you know...) until the movie, anyway.

Check out the October solicit for the Flash?

Written by Joey Cavalieri; Art by Val Semeiks & Livesay; Cover by Art Thibert

A exciting new creative team comes aboard as THE FLASH speeds toward . . . the end? The past always seems to catch up with the Fastest Man Alive, and as INFINITE CRISIS approaches, Wally West reflects on his life with his wife and kids and sees that the end may be near

His predecessor Impulse is popular enough. And the new Captain Boomerang is supposedly Impulse's half-brother. I personally don't like Impulse, but Wally was Kid Flash just before the last Crisis... Could Crisis repeat itself with the death of Flash?

I really do believe that it will, it's just the kind of unimaginative crap that DC seem happy to pull at the moment.

And Barry Allen has just showed up in Flash's own comic. Could be a fore-shadowing of Wally's fate.

Or he could switch places with Barry and it could be Wally that dies/died fighting the Anti-Monitor...

I think all this 'another Flash will die' stuff is a red herring. I refuse to believe that DC will go down that route, it's too predictable even for DC.

I'm down for it as long as Wally's last utterance is a Tim Bisleyan "You've got to be fucking kidding."

("The Staunton Lick" by Lemon Jelly playing in the background at my LCS when I read it [or, 'skipped to the end,' natch] would also help.)

Did the Rich Johnston spolier say 'a hero will die and *his* successor will take over' or that *their* successor will take over? If it's the former then I'm betting on Bats 'dying' (that is, retiring in shame for creating Brother 1) and Bruce Wayne committing himself to Arkham (possibly running some sort of Oracle style operation from the inside?) and Dick Grayson becoming the permanent Batman. If it's the latter, then I'll go for Wonder Woman, with Donna Troy as the replacement. She's already crossed the rubicon by killing Maxwell Lord and D.C are making too big a fuss about Donna returning for her to take a backseat when the Crisis kicks in.
Incidentally, which comics is the brainwashed-Supes story in? I need to catch up on this one.
