Yep - it's in Conversation. We generally rely on people's better natures rather than moderation. If we want to make an exception for particular insanity (and there are, as observed, queasy bits of sexual and racial stereotyping in there), that's cool, but we need to come up with a good reason why.

My principal reasons why are that the discussion has now exceeded the topic and that, as a matter of opinion, I think that there is more benefit to the participants and the board in general if this particular horse isn't publically flogged. It would be nice to see some respect for an admission of fault, however framed, and let the matter slide as an expression of good faith that the poster in question won't be doing that again.

My understanding of this is: you would like to get rid of the thread (fair enough). You then imply that "quasi-religious/spiritual references" qualify the thread for a move to the Temple. I found that a bit irritating, even as a joke. If I was misreading you and I overreacted, then I'm sorry, but in the past people have made comments a lot like that in all seriousness. (And no, I didn't think you were comparing the Temple to Stormfront.)

I didn't really want to get rid of the thread as much as put it somewhere that I wouldn't see it. The only two fora that I pretty much never go into are The Temple and Comics. Given the subject matter and that there was already existing reference to DHE being expelled from the Temple on this subject it seemed like the obvious choice for the joke reference.

I appreciate that the freaks and wierdo's finger gets pointed at the Temple on occasion but never from me. In fact I have always demonstrated the utmost respect for those who do discuss and contribute to the temple and have even defended the forum in the face of such comments. Frankly it irks me that my prior form on the subject counts for sweet fuck all around here and the worst is automatically assumed.

To put it another way when someone on this board tells me I posted something questionable I assume they are giving me benefit of the doubt even when expressing vexation with what I said.

More generally this I think can be accounted for with an attention conservation model: I don't regard it as assumable that any person is able to remember every comment that every poster makes. I know that I generally recall an impression of others through some kind of summed vector of their posts' flavour - enough to say "that doesn't sound like them, somehow" on an occasion perhaps - but it's aura rather than detail. (And I know mine can be shown to be incorrect anyway, when I check the threads and names and dates.)

The thing is, I don't agree with the divorcing of post and poster. One is something of an extension of the other. If I see something wrongheaded posted by someone that seems markedly out of character I would look first to find a different reading of the post before calling them on it.

I believe the medium we are using is so prone to communication issues that often you do have to take into account a post which doesn't inform about the world view of the poster. Rather I take them as posibly one moment of their expression misconstrued on either the formation end or the reception end.

I believe some folk, while being invested in the entire board, have a one or a handful of really dear to their hearts areas.
When I say Temple Folk I'm specificly referring to people who hold it in high esteem and are protective of its reputation as a serious place of exchange. The nature of the forum is that of a community of people sharing information about topics usually under intense dispute in other off board locales. When talking about spiritual or religious beliefs a different set of etiquette is required and utilized.
