Ticker
15:35 / 24.10.06
I thought English preserve was black currant for the good days and that nasty ol' marmalade on bad days?

Worry not, I was merely being smutty.

Nasty marmalade??

Marmalade? Nasty??

I believe somewhere in the world there exists fine marmalade unlike the scary orange rind ridden translucent day glo glue that often thwarts my union with the black currant divinity. But then again, I believe in black dogs and alien big cats and so maybe a wholly unreliable source of information.

My grandad makes marmalade. It's alright. Sometimes he makes it with limes as well, but I don't know what you would call that.

Ticker
17:36 / 24.10.06
I believe it is called lime marmalade.

marmalade ( ) n. A clear, jellylike preserve made from the pulp and rind of fruits, especially citrus fruits.

Spaniel
17:39 / 24.10.06
It is indeed called lime marmalade, and it is good, although not as good as the orange variety, in my book.

Ticker
17:43 / 24.10.06
I'll see your orange marmalade and raise you a ginger marmalade.

I know I usually complain that this thread gets sidetracked away from the annoyance, but I'm glad the fighting from yesterday has turned into jam talk.

You should never, never put marmalade in a book, boboss.

Bitter rinds from bitter oranges. The oranges of Seville, the bitterness of Inverness.

I love marmalade.

My mother makes it, too. With oranges grown next door.

Bitter, brown marmalade. With chewy bits. Bitter bits. Bitty bitter marmalade.

Beautiful.

Yes! Bitter maramalade with lots of rind!

Although marmalade pudding is a bit rank.

Er.. how annoying...

Your Mum's a scrumper!?
Ummmm, telling... *dashes next door*

Spaniel
18:03 / 24.10.06
Can you scrump oranges? I thought scrumping was all about the apples.

XK, are you trying to suggest that ginger marmalade is superior to the orange variety? Nonsense, I say!

StarWhisper
18:05 / 24.10.06
There is lots of marmalade in this book my grandad just gave me.
Its called "The complete book of home preserving"

It includes recipies for bramble and crab-apple jellies and a whole chapter on wine made from different kinds of autumn fruits. Including four fruit brandy and blackcurrant gin.

Stoat, I can't beleive there is even a thread of this nature, honestly sometimes it's the only one with any movement on it at all - this one and 'things that elicit a frown' -surely life is too short.

Any one fancy a glass of damson cordial?

Spaniel

Is there a chapter on pickles?

8:chutneys, pickles and sauces.

It gives many useful hints on equiptment and storage.

And tells you how to make
Pickled eggs, cucumbers, Pickle nasturtiam seeds, pickled peaches, pickled pears and spiced melon.

In the chutney quarter: Damson chutney, pineapple chutney, runner bean chutney and mint chutney as well as a whole host of other bizzare and mouth watering chutnies, (or should that be chutneys'?).

hey after a night of heavy drinking, ginger marmalade can save your life.
that orange pap* is just going to sit in the open air on your toast leering and looking a lot like vomit attracting flies and surly waitrons.

But once again I must put up a hand and call for a moment of reflection. Here in the Tabernacle of Jam, All Preserves Are Welcome.

*grant's mum's fabulous homemade stuff not included
