That would be interesting. Ecclestone does look a little like Delgado and Ainley, as well. Ah. How would he know the UNIT password?

Tom Tit's Tot: A Girl!
22:13 / 20.05.05
Yes, I admit it's stretching confronted with the Welsh girl's exact words, but there is something in "Doctor Dances" that suggests there's more to him than meets the eye. Nothing obvious or plot spoilery, unless (like me) you're looking for it.

I second the case for Jack.

Given that the tvfilm still seems to be canon (despite the Tardis being un-Gothicked), we're still waiting for the explanation of the McGann/Ecclestone?Tennant? regeneration, as well... I'm assuming this is to be done off camera?

No! RTD has confirmed that there will be a Christmas special, and speculation is that the regeneration will be the focus of it. Here's hoping!

Let's not forget this morning's Breakfast News which made a bit of screw-up by plugging Jack heavily as the "Doctor's new adversary", folowed by Barrowman desperately trying to back-pedal and de-spoil.

... forgive me if I say anything previously mentioned but re the 8th doctor and his lack of tv adventures - the book of his final adventure 'gallifrey chronicles' is slated for release AFTER the finish of the current tv season ie they don't want you to know what happened re the mcgann/ecclestone regeneration that we've never seen ... all I can find is this :

The Doctor's home planet of Gallifrey has been destroyed. The Time Lords are dead, their TARDISes annihilated. The man responsible has been tracked down and lured to Earth in the year 2005, where there will be no escape.

... which happens to be when the current season starts ...

There is an interesting bit in this month's DWM by RTD about how NONE of the external media is allowed to be canon, because the BBC's charter expressly forbids programme makers to create anything that requires viewers/ listeners to buy merchandise (and by this they mean all books/ magazines/ comics/ DVDs/videos/ audio adventures/ yada/ and/ yada) in order to understand a BBC production. It doesn't matter what the McGann novels say, it means nothing in the world off RTD BBC Who. Just thought I'd clear that up.

Until Tom comes in to tell me that's not true.

... daft question but - aren't some( if not a lot / all / and I'm pretty sure the gallifrey chronicles novel, although I'd have to check ) of these novels sanctioned or something by the BBC ie they have the BBC logo on them etc??? (with all due respect to the BBC etc)

Yes, I think this is the case. They're not technically canon, though. This is a good thing, because it means that anything that we need to know about the 8th Doctor/9th Doctor regeneration will have to be onscreen somehow, because we can't be expected to have read the novels.

Not necessarily shut the fuck up.. just contribute something of value. We already get that they have seen a preview tape. Having everything anyone says responded to with "well, in a future episode..." is tedious.

Was thoroughly uninvolved in this weeks episode... which was suprising.
Thought it was dragging on a bit then the credits rolled. Missed the (superior) Dr Who Confidential so will watch that tomorrow instead.
I have to say I've been enjoying 'Confidential much more than the actual series...

< Waves hand >

Although, was this episode supposed to be extra double-plus scary?

Enjoyed it, though not particularly loving the American guy so much. I reckon Victor Meldrew should be the next companion, "Daleks? I don't believe it!"

And while the Doctor Who novels may not be strictly cannon, that would stop RTD suggesting ideas and not contradicting the books would it?

Glad to see them moving the 'next on' to after the credits at least, though it does seem to explain pretty much the entire theory of what is going on next week, if not for the little details of how our heroes escape their various cliffhangers...

Issue of spoilers in this thread more or less covered here. That's with moderator hat on - it doesn't take a genius to figure out what might be acceptable and what might not, nor to actually put spoiler warnings in your bloody posts. At least I didn't previously think that was the case, but maybe I was wrong. Given that there's only apparently the two of you in this entire thread with the need to discuss the contents of the episodes you've seen via preview tapes, maybe you could do it in private messages if you have to do it at all?

Flowers> Yeah, was happy to see the trailer moved to after the credits. It's not just a question of giving away the plot, but also one of ensuring that the atmosphere created in the current episode isn't utterly destroyed straight away. An end credits sequence should be a bookend rather than just a list of names.

I was a bit disappointed with the big special effects in last week's episode, where the Reapers looked a little rubbery in terms of texture and poorly-defined in terms of design for my liking. By contrast, the huge amount of work on this one was almost without fault. The thing of being able to see right through the 'gas mask' goggles and tell that the head was empty didn't work quite as well as it probably should have, but that was my only minor quibble.

Liking Hawkins. One of the things that Eccleston's Doctor is missing is any sense of swish and swagger, and this character could plug that gap nicely. Would also work well up against a swishy, swaggering Tennant Doctor.

That was rather ace.

I especially liked the painterly look of all the panoramic scenery - they seemed to be going for a specific "look" rather than realism, and it really worked. Small child fucking creepy, as was the Meldrew Transformation Scene...a genuinely unpleasant image, especially with the old man grating out "Mummy..."etc. Not sure what I make of Cap'n Jack...he's a bit of an identikit Swaggery Obvious Flawed Hero for my liking, but I thought the Ecclestone/street urchin interaction was spot-on and not patronising. (Also, the "I'm not sure whether it's Marxism in action or a West End musical" line made me spray dinner everywhere). Interesting to see where this goes, as there are only a few episodes to go now...

Have I spoiled something? All I said was "I second Cube's theory" but it's just that, a theory and is simply little to do with any early knowledge of episodes. The fact is, I read spoilers on a web page about Jack before the series even started. None of the posts I have made have included spoilers, of any kind.

That said, I'm quite happy to stop posting, as that seems to be the consensus decision.

Good good. Your sacrifice will not go unnoticed. Well, actually, it sort of will, but, you know.

It seems to me the easy thing to do here is to take SPOILERS out of the title of this thread, since it was originally referring to people who had seen the first episode before its official release.

Very much enjoyed this one. I'm finding that the scenes seem to last a little too long, or at least longer than one expects,. I'm wondering whether this is connected to the way that we are in this country used to 45-minute sci-fi series being based around advert breaks that we don't see...

Ecclestone seemed to be on good form, and I liked his interaction with Nancy. Having carefully avoided the "Next week" message, I'm hoping (and expecting) that she will have a further part to play. Jack would make a terrible nemesis - he's a gag: the glamorous, buccaneering, gadget-heavy but somewhat amoral time traveller that the Doctor isn't.

Elsewhere, I didn't pick up on the empty eyes bit - what was the effect? I'm also a bit disappointed by another use of POV. Doing this removes exteriority, and undermines the alienation - if we can see how they perceive the world, we find them less unheimlich, IMHO.

Jack's coat's very nice, though.

Whoops. I mean Harkness, not Hawkins. Slight confusion with

which is fair enough, no?

Elsewhere, I didn't pick up on the empty eyes bit - what was the effect?

You were supposed to see nothing more than the inside of the skull (or whatever had replaced the skull - a hollow curve, anyway). Didn't work very well because they hadn't properly established what the idea of the kid being 'empty' actually meant. I can see why, in a way - this was, presumably, the big reveal shot that was intended to tell you that he's not just emotionally empty, but physically too - but it was such a quick shot that it was bound to go unnoticed by a lot of people. They'd also given the goggles a magnifying lens effect, which is a nice touch in theory, but in practice just made it even less noticable - came across more as a metallic reflection than anything else.

Really small thing, because the rest of the effects were so unexpectedly brilliant for a bit of Beeb SF, but given that it was concerning the nature of this episode's big bad it's an important small thing.

Guys, I've never watched a DW episode in my life, but I caught this one in work and it just totally fucking won me over. Creepiness, action, sci-fi and a dash of camp from Ecclescone and Pipes. Is right!

"Physical trauma as plague" "Mummy, are you my mummy?" Victor Meldrew in Cronenberg body horror scaregasm "A bomb that isn't a bomb" "You're dead, Jamie. You're dead" "Oh, you're real subtle: Union Jack girl and U-Boat captain" hee!

Nice cliffhanger. We know it's an injury virus going around. How's the doctor doing to get out of this one. Come up with an immunisation/anti-viral? And has Pipes fallen for Captain Jack Sparrow?

Triplets
01:22 / 22.05.05
Haus, I wouldn't say the added POV detracts from the creepiness of the walking plague. Predator was just as creepy in the first half and we got to see all sorts from his thermoscope.

The POV is just to add to the atmosphere of humans being hunted. It's not meant to humanise those creepy gasmask fucks.

They have done it rather a lot, though...it was in Father's Day, and they used it with the Jagrafess, and the list very probably goes on...it's become a bit of a cliché by now, I feel. While I'm being negative, I also thought some of the Cap'n Jack/Rose dialogue suffered from rampaging Moffatism at times ("Hello...er...hello" /"Don't start that again") which detracted from the atmosphere a little.

I find that too but I don't think it's because we're used to shows going faster- I don't have a problem with British drama or other types of programmes that go slower. Dr Who has been quite a fast show in the past, only suspenseful scenes went slowly (fuck! Daleks can go up stairs). I think they're confusing scenes that create suspense with scenes where Rose meets some strange man and wants to get off with him.

That was indeed nice and spooky. The kind of jumbled together, what the fuck blend of skiffy and horror that has always been my favourite type of Who episode (even the much-maligned McCoy had "Ghost Light" which I absolutely loved).

And yes, that kid was well fucking creepy. And it's now occurred to me, after seeing the infected guys at the end, just how much scarier zombies would be if they kept asking for their mummy. (Strangely, mummies that constantly asked for zombies would be a bit shit.)

Can't fucking wait for next week.
