Our Boy Klarion won't die! He's too clever for all that.

I was thinking more that it would suggest his desire to play with fire by betraying 'the team', though how that would work without ever meeting one another is anyone's guess. Ah, baseless speculation.

Swank cover, though. It's interesting to see JH's initial designs in the 7S Vol.1 trade, and then to see his takes on the series' artist's interpretations here on the #1 cover. A nice organic progression. (As Cameron mentioned, every artist but Bianchi seemed to stick more with Morrison's initial sketches than the ink drawings Williams did, as shown in the trade - Williams' Klarion is gorgeously done, his Frankenstein like an old, ornery prospector with a steam-engine on his back.)

I'm glad they decided to show the early iterations, the development of a project like this is interesting on that level.

Dear God, that's one fantastic cover. (#1 cover)

Although am I the only one who thinks Ystin(a) looks kind of completely male in JHW III's shot? altough it's kind of hard to tell with the yellow ink lines...

Did #0 also have 32 pages or am I going to have to leap off the tallest building in sight?

#0 was 38 pages. Does that make you more or less likely to defenestrate yourself?

I...don't know. Is that 38 pages of story or 38 pages total?

Of story.

Yotsuba & Benjamin!

Gotta go. I think there's a line forming.

Man, that's disappointing. That's a heck of a lot of story to cram into twenty something pages of story. Maybe they just mislabeled it? Mr. jhw3, can you confirm this harrowing turn of events?

(Did you see what I did there? Where I used the word 'harrowing'? Sort of tied things into the Seven Soldiers storyline that way.)

the traitor - specially if it's Klarion, for that matter - doesn't even have to KNOW he/she's betraying the others...

niiiiiice cover, JHW3.

here's hoping at least some of those characters get another mini, or maybe an ongoing even.

I'd suggest that in order to betray someone you have to know what you're doing. That's not to say the DC hype machine is adverse to taking the odd linguistic liberty, though.

damn I thought it would be an around-60-pages issue or something. There's so much more I want to see oh lordy...

I do think Hector MIGHT have a point. That's a very 'morrisonian' concept, where being yourself is already a betrayal to yourself (which Zatanna's 'annoy daddy' works perfectly in a oposite similar vein). I don't know, but the way Frankie is handling things until now seems like a good example of that.

And sometimes (IMHO) the Sheeda do feel like some sort of "inevitable" hell somehow, a necessary evil of sorts (sort of like Melmoth is proving himself to be the bad daddy, the necessary evil that pushes you foward to act against Gloriana).

Oh man I wasn't liking the series at first. Now it's the only thing I read (and religiously I might add). I wish there was more

I suppose one of the seven could betray their ideals or original goals or somesuch, and that could have a direct knock on effect for the rest.

I think I'm going to stop being such a pedant today. I'm starting to annoy myself.

What's the precendent that one of the Seven Soldiers™ is going to betray the team? Did Grant say that somewhere?

Our Lady Has Left the Building

Well, in terms of dying, back in the Golden Age the soldier that died turned out to be one of the hangers-on who was posthumously given membership, so perhaps Misty sacrifices herself to kill Gloriana?

The Justice Society of Justice (page 16 of this thread, real-life superheroes patrolling the streets of Indianapolis) have been INTERVIEWED by Rich Johnston at Lying in the Gutters:

>> Mr Silent agreed to be interviewed by Lying In The Gutters. I started by asking if he was part of Grant Morrison's prediction, when he started writing "New X-Men," that we would start to see real superheroes in the next few years - and what led the JSJ to don costumes to fight crime rather than become volunteer police.

MR SILENT: Superheroes have been a part of the American psyche for some time now, I was especially touched by them. I just think that having the traditional police job is not for everyone. There is also a need for superheroes. People want something to believe in. I would rather it be a superhero than a villian.

LITG: I'm sure that's true for all of us - but what's your success on the streets been so far?

MR SILENT: There have actually been very few events so far. This is probably because we live in Indianapolis. The police do a very good job of keeping the crime rate low. We have prevented one crime so far, there we some people messing with little old lady and we appeared and they walked away. I don't think they were prepared for that kind of shock. We have also had confrontations with people who want to start fights or take off my mask. We don't mainly look for criminals. We are more focused on finding people to save. If that person needs saved from a mugger or rapist, then so be it. We also only fight violent crimes. Property crimes don't concern us as of yet. We also don't concern ourselves with drugs. Just the crimes where someone is going to get hurt.

LITG: So what is your official legal situation - have you had any reaction from traditional law keepers?

MR SILENT: As far as the police are concerned, we hardly exist. They will usually drive by with out looking at us or they sometimes even wave.

LITG: And could your very presence create an equal and opposite - super villains?

MR SILENT: We have thought about the question of super villains long and hard. What we have decided is that it is most likely going to happen. I think the Universe will have to balance itself. If there are superheroes eventually someone is going to decide to get some press too. Except they will not have benevolent intentions. When that day comes we will be ready for them.

LITG: Really? One common comment on message boards is that you'll likely find yourselves seriously wounded or killed. Is this a worry for you?

MR SILENT: In my opinion, I'm going to die anyway. Might as well leave a good looking corpse. Even if said corpse has a superhero costume on. We are also very careful.

LITG: Your "Mr Silent" identity reminds me of characters such as Big Ben, Silver Surfer, and the Droogs from Clockwork Orange. Do you have any specific influences in terms of superhero style?

MR SILENT: I would have to say I'm kind of influenced by Rorschach from "Watchmen." Even then, only a little. I do get the Clockwork Orange thing a lot.

LITG: I wonder why… have any of the inner conflicts common in the superhero fictions come true for you?

MR SILENT: I can only speak for myself on this one. I don't really have any inner conflicts which induced me to become super. I mainly liked superheroes and decided it was about time we had some. I knew that someone had to take that first step. I do keep my identity secret in order to protect my family and friends. Other than Doktor DiscorD, no one in the entire world know who I am. I imagine that when I am too old for the superhero thing that I will retire and reveal myself to the world. Maybe not though. People are always trying to find out who is beneath the mask. They are not very likely to find out though. I do not really talk about superheroes in my regular life. I figure if I say anything someone might remember it later.

LITG: Thank you, Mr Silent. Do keep us up to date with further events, or any psychological revelations.

MR SILENT: Thank you for your time. I hope your readers are satisfied with this. Good luck to you in everything you do.

We hope to ask Doktor DiscorD similar questions in the near future.

I've gotta say, for a guy named "Mr. Silent," he's a yappy bastard, isn't he?

He kind of looks like the new JSA villain (from about issue 16 of the current run) Johnny Sorrow (face mask & suit and all that).

I just saw Goldfrapp's 'ooh la la' video. I wish Horsefeathers in the end would turn himself into that huge glam disco-ball reflective horse, only golden and really really shiny.

I have to say, of all the people I'd like to see get chewed on by the mandibles of a terrifying giant robot spider, these douchebags come somewhere near top of the list.

This all reminds me of being in elementary school, running around in the forests beyond the schoolfield, playing superheroes. I was probably the equivalent of Dial H for Hero, I could never decide who I wanted to be.

I'm also thinking about that study I recall - the one about whether or not people who read Superman comics (specifically) are more or less likely to be heroic. I think the upshot was not.

Ystin played at being a boy, and a knight - what formal training did she have? Would a girl of her status in Ye Olde Camelot(e) have been schooled in the ways of war? She's heroic because she takes to the skies on Vanguard without concern for herself, not really, she transcends the cosplay element and becomes Athena as a Boy or Ares as a Girl. I find it interesting if you think back that Ystin had no contact with the other knights, she was already on Castle Revolving, they didn't know she was their Seventh Knight...

she transcends the cosplay element

What did she ever have to do with "the cosplay element" in the first place?

Ystin was a squire before she was knighted. She'd obviously been hiding the truth for a while.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Petey: What did she ever have to do with "the cosplay element" in the first place?

Well, I was being a touch facetious with the cosplay bit, and also trying to segue out of the JSJ stuff. And while she may have been a squire for quite some time, Ystin becomes a touch more mystical/symbolic when she is knighted, she undergoes a transformation. Being a knight is - to me - more symbolic than being a squire.

Although, actually, when I think about it - can we connect Beryl and her struggle with the Knight and his possession by the Sheeda with Ystin and her struggle with Gaiwain and his possession by the Sheeda? Hadn't noticed that until just now.

Thoughts - how many girls-dressed-as-boys stories of this fashion - the Boy's Own Adventure fashion - don't involve some kind of romantic entanglement with the "proper" gender? Or boys-dressed-as-girls. Some Like it Hot had Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe, but it subverted that with Jack Lemmon ending up with the old guy. The element of the girl dressed as a boy falling for a guy she's around and having to disguise / distract from the apparent homoerotic aspects seem built into the genre. I'm not sure what exactly I'm asking here.

From the latest Crisis Counseling thing in Newsarama.

?: Does Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers: Zatanna book take place before or after Crisis? Does Seven Soldiers factor into Crisis at all?

DD: We have positioned Seven Soldiers as post-Crisis, running simultaneously with 52. Anyone think otherwise?

Interesting. We finally get semi-offcial word, albeit with plenty of wiggle room.
