Well, Zee pretty much says she's punishing herself and feeling guilty for her JLActions. I'm not sure where else the events of Identity Crisis have been mentioned, but I'm sure there's been at least one other.

Well, of course in issue 0 whatsisname does make reference to the Seven Soldiers being a superhero group from the past, not sure when but either just before or just after dubyadubyatwo. So that might bollox my theory a bit.

Looks like they're going with publication order for the collection. Not sure if that sounds like a good or not-so-good idea (I'm buying the individual copies anyway, so not an issue for me):

That's gonna boil it down to about 4 trades. I wonder how long the delay in between them will be, and if there's any chance at all of one massive collected edition or even the more sensible two volumes, really - One phase 1 trade with the opener and first four series, then the second with the final 3 and the closer).

Interesting to think of the different ways the narrative would feel depending on how it was initially read. I'm genuinely curious as to what the effect on the reader would be absorbing each mini from 1-4 in order, rather than 'as released'. Probably a bit less coherent, ironically enough. Maybe not.

It's all over in April, either way. Or May, depending on delays. :P

Bummed at a lack of Soldier releases for the past month. The regular intake was reaching really exciting levels of idea development.

Yeah, 17 comics is a bit much to ram in one trade, though. 'S nearly 400 pages. Bit've a bother to collect, this one, I think.

Fortunately, has no impact on my life.

Personally, I was expecting the JLA: Classified arc would be included as well, but I guess not.

Speekinawitch: Will the classified arcs be put into trades? It's about time, I think.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Still wondering if Bulleteer and Zatanna will end up coming out the same day, or if they'll put it off for two weeks.

Have we had any SOLDIERS this month at all? Mister Miracle was definitely September. I suppose I'm going to have to make do with yon crack pipe...

Funny, before seeing this trade announcement I was planning to suggest we collaboratively assemble an optimal reading order as the individual issues come out. IMO, that would already be slightly different than publication order, in that Zatanna #3 came out prior to the issue of Shining Knight to which it was clearly a followup...

Aertho
18:56 / 11.10.05
We could still do so.

Well alright then; I'll post my tentative order, subject to revision, tomorrow morning.

Jack Weird and Jack the Bodiless = one guy, two suits, three times the acerbicity?

You'd think, but no. I believe Mr. Fear's having a bad day.

If that's the case, go here or here.

Guys help me out here. If Zatanna 4 was pushed back until Nov and Klarion 4 still comes out next week it means we are going to be reading them further out of order. Right?????

Simplist
15:41 / 13.10.05
Tentative optimal reading order so far:

1. Seven Soldiers #0
2. Shining Knight #1
3. Guardian #1
4. Klarion #1
5. Zatanna #1
6. Shining Knight #2
7. Guardian #2
8. Klarion #2
9. Zatanna #2
10. Shining Knight #3
11. Guardian #3
12. Klarion #3
13. Shining Knight #4
14. Zatanna #3
15. Guardian #4
16. Mister Miracle #1

So far the above diverges from publication order only in that Zatanna #3 actually came out before Shining Knight #4, though I'm sure further discrepancies will appear as the series continues...

Aertho
17:32 / 13.10.05
I'd start with Zatanna 1, then include the Classifieds...

That way, we can walk into 7S#0 and see Gimmix again.

Z 1
JLAC 1
JLAC 2
JLAC 3
7S 0
Z 2
TMG 1
TMG 2
K 1
K 2
SK 1
SK 2
SK 3
SK 4
Z 3
TMG 3
TMG 4
K 3
K 4
Z 4

No idea wyet how the second wave fits in, but I'm sure there'll be overlap.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
17:50 / 13.10.05
Hey, if you wanted to be really fun, you could pull the Shining Knight #1 and put it ahead of Zatanna, so we have the opening of the Sheeda followed by Gimmix at the group, followed by...

The Falcon
01:38 / 14.10.05
No, Chad's list is best. All the #1's go directly into the #2's.

I'd like to read them in that order, but that cunt yawn's got my #2-3 of Classified. (Admittedly, I do have about twenty of his comics.)

The first tpb has been solicited here

Instead of having a separate collection for each character and one for the bookends they've mixed them up. I was going to buy the trades but I don't see much point now. I wanted 7 separate complete stories, not a mish-mash (this is why I didn't buy the singles in the first place).

I would have liked stand alone tpbs (or maybe two per tpb) of the individuals titles, but also see the appeal of sticking to GM's design for the project.

I am especially looking fwd to Frankie, the rest of MM and the Other Bookend, but have not developed much of an impression/expectation for Bulletteer? Morrison has a damned tough act to follow after the first four series...

(and I'm sure he'll pull it off with aplomb)

Instead of TPBs I think the best format for Seven Soldiers would be to just reprint them in some kind of cool looking box with all the single issues kept inside it (maybe reprinted without adds) so that people can read the story in whatever order they want. That way you could still put it on a book shelf with the box, but at the same time you could preserve the story's true structure, which doesn't look like it has a linear beggining-middle-end set up to it. It would let people experiment with how the experience of the story changes depending on whether you read it in the order it was printed, or one miniseries at a time, or starting with Frankenstein and ending with Shining Knight, or whatever. The trades are just going to lock us (and future readers especially, who don't have the single issues) into a single way of taking in the story, which I think would take a lot of fun out of the series. Seven Soldiers has a really unique structure, it should have a unique way of staying in print.

That's a very cool idea, KU.

Now it is reminding me of a Flaming Lips record that I never heard but read about. It is called "Zarika" I think. Five cds designed to be listened to at the same time, a clashing, meshing soundscape. You control cue times, volume and whatever other fx yr system is capable of.

Anybody actually had the Zarika experience?

Aye, use Zaireeka as your search term. seth aka the SZA goes on about it, iirc.

Nice analogy, mind.

I think that's a smashing idea Kirk. I do like going for the old 7S mashup when I've little else to do. Something like those old Massive Attack singles boxsets.

Colonel Kadmon
22:27 / 23.10.05
It is a damn good idea, KU - I'm doing a similar thing by buying all the individual issues!

Makes you wonder though - the order in which we're reading them as they come out is one ordering, but not the one GM wanted, due to unpredicted delays. Reading each series from 1 to four would be another logical reading. Presumably the order GM thinks best is the one in the trades, though I haven't had a look to see if it's the same as the original publication schedule. I don't think so - but I'm sure someone will clarify.

So - thus far we have potentially three official readings - newsstand schedule, actual newsstand publication, and trade publication.

PS. How important is the JLAC arc? I'm following the whole thing but I never heard about this until long after 7S started because I don't really read DCU stuff. Did Morrison write it? Is it gonna be collected, or what? Is it important?

Triplets

Morrison wrote JLA:C #1-3. They contain the first appearence of the Sheeda and Nebuloh The Huntsman.

What Gorby said, but I don't know how important it is to 7 Soldiers. It's great fun, though, and raps up the fate of Superbia and the Ultramarines for any followers of Morrison's original JLA run.

I'd be surprised if anything from that arc is vital to the appreciation of 7S (unless Nehbuhloh's vague origins end up being key to the whole plot).

Cool. I was just worried I missed something.

Was this a while ago? I ask because it's really not like me to miss a Morrison comic.

The last ish came out the same day as the last one of WE3.

Mark Parsons

I'd say the JLAC arc is pretty key, depending on how into 7S you are. It tells how Nebuloh relates to the DCU, I believe and may offer other hints as to connections betwixt DCU reality and our own.

Are there seven JLA players in this series (or stand-ins from the Ultramarines?)?

Bottom line: this is old school silver age gonzoness that is far afield from the grimmer IDC/IC books. Batman goes to Pluto: Fun, fun, fun!

Imaginary Mongoose Solutions

I think the possible origin of Nebuloh adds a lot to my reading of SS, at least. I also just really like that JLA arc a lot. The "infant universe/real world" stuff is great. And it reads very well as a prologue, especially once Nebby starts going on about The Seven.

It's on my SS required reading list, at least.
