How come this cover of Seven Soldiers TPB Vol. 1 from the DC site is different than Cameron's illustration on the previous page?

Regrettable Juvenilia
14:59 / 10.01.06
Because Cameron Stewart's cover is for volume 2.

Mario
15:02 / 10.01.06
Interestingly, the cover for TPB #1 appears to be the background of TPB #2. I wonder if this trend will continue.

So the picture zooms further out with each trade?

That's very cool.

Aertho

Conceptually perfect.

Keith, like a scientist
15:30 / 10.01.06
totally didn't catch that. lovely.

I also didn't realize Cameron's cover was for Vol. 2...interesting that these will be a different artist for each TPB cover, with each artist illustrating on top of the previous.

Aertho

That's means seven volumes? Each in order?

volume 1 : Bianchi
volume 2 : Stewart

Sook
Irving
Williams
Paquette
Mahnke

wonder if the zoom will cycle back in on itself

Sniv

I thought it was four volumes for the trades. That means we'll probably get a further cover with Shilo, Frankie and the Bulleteer in centre stage and then... I dunno. Final volume though, so it's bound to be something special (better be!).

Mario
16:24 / 10.01.06
Knowing Grant, I bet it'll be something metafictional, like two hands holding the cover to TPB #3. Or all 7 soldiers in a gallery looking at the cover to #3.

Aertho
16:47 / 10.01.06
Or the team squaring off against Sheeda Queen/Huntsman for volume 4... or the Seven Unknown Men looking down on the action.

I took Simone's cover for Volume 1, reduced it, lightboxed it, added Klarion and Guardian, and filled in the background details. At the time I submitted the final art for my cover, the artists for Vols. 3 and 4 hadn't been determined, but I do know that each cover will be a progressively wider shot incorporating more characters, as surmised above.

Awesome! It's great to see covers actually being used as something more than character pin-ups (the trend in superhero comics these days, unfortunately).

Given that Sook and Irving are over at Marvel now, and the mess with the Mister Miracle artists, I say either Mahnke or Paquette will handle vol. 3, and I would LOVE to see J.H. Williams do an ultra-mind-blowing final cover for vol.4!

Are you out there, J.H.? What are the odds of this happening?

Cameron - whose call was it which character you added apart from Guardian? The right choice, anyway, in terms of artist fitting subject...

Jack Fear

That's a rather, ah, idiosyncratic interpretation of Zatanna on Bianchi's cover: "Stsaerb epacse wodiwyrrem tesroc!"

>>>Cameron - whose call was it which character you added apart from Guardian? The right choice, anyway, in terms of artist fitting subject... <<<

The editor of the trade collections told me which characters to include. It was my decision to give Klarion the position of prominence, though, just because I was interested in drawing a character other than Guardian for a change...

"That's a rather, ah, idiosyncratic interpretation of Zatanna"

Isn't that based on the sketch Grant did, early on?

Or, as what startled me, because I pulled a Hitch and used a photo of myself (slightly elongated) for Klarion?

Oddly enough, my first thought was that Klarion looked a bit like you. I only met you once, VERY briefly at ComiCon 2000 (I think) but I am good with faces.

Really? I lightboxed that photo. I wasn't slavish, I changed some of the details, but it's still pretty close...

real-life Eight Soldiers of Victory [not actual name, but reminded of The Whip]:

so tonight is the first night in a new era here in indianapolis. the dawn of the age of superheroes. after realizing the total lack of justice in the world, my friends and i have decided to become superheroes in order to balance this fracturing planet of ours. tonight, with my partner in crime fighting “Mr. Silent”, we went around the city helping people and stopping fights, drunk drivers, and a group of young dumb kids hitting an old woman’s car.

we’ve started a group called the Justice Society of Justice (offering twice the Justice as the leading competitors) and we go out and fight crime on a semi nightly basis.

we’ve only got about 8 hardcore members that go out with us right now,but we’re hoping to raise that number tenfold.

hey there mr. tulpa
i haven't been looking at any of these threads for quite awhile. but since i saw your question thought i would reply. i don't know if i will be asked to do a cover for the collection set or not. the original plan was that i was going to do all 4 covers for the set and that they would form a giant 4 section image to be possibly released as a poster. but i ended up having to back out of that commitment due to time constraints involving other projects and editorial not giving enough time or information as to what exactly needed to be done because i would have had to complete all 4 covers at the same time. because of it forming a poster image. my original idea was to have the covers form a giant more intricate shield design similar issue 0 and issue 1 but much more extravagant. it would have been fun and very challenging to say the least. unfortunately things didn't work out. so at this point i'm not sure if i'm going to be involved in the production of collections at all.

Well thanks for the update J.H.! Looking forward to 7S#1. I hope this is just the start of your collaborations with Morrison. Also, congrats on the continued good work on Desolation Jones!

Aye, but Death-With-Bunny-Ears-Man is great conceptually. You know, you see two bunny ears coming out of a corner and think "ooo! It's a cute bunny! Let's see the bunny! Let's feed the bunHOLY FUCK, IS DEATH!"

See, less effective on those of us who've seen Donnie Darko. I'd react with: "Oh, look, someone's failing to be Frank. Someone's failing to terrify me as much as Frank did, creepy fucking Frank, Frank walking invisibly behind me in the night." I might have all the lights on for the rest of the night because of the idea of Frank, but this guy? Not happening.

Our Klarion's got his hand in the fire on the #1 cover. I wonder how much they're giving away with that.

Here's hoping the traitor and the martyr both make it out of the event anyway. I wouldn't want to part with any of these characters just yet.
