So the Guardian is going to be attacked by a motley collection of ethnic stereotypes?

Cameron, is the Issue 3 cover a nod to this?

Beautiful covers - I'm seeing a real Adam Hughes influence in Sook's cover for #3, esp. Z's profile.

I'm also seeing a Jon Bogdanove influence in Cam's cover to #3 - Bog often drew the Guardian (the original one) in the Superman: Man of Steel ongoing series, years back. I almost thought the cover was by Bog on first quick glance - the posing of the Guardian, the look of the other figures... also evoked Bret Blevins' style to me (he's hardly a big name but used to work a lot in comics).

I love the Chinese lady's high heel -- that awkward foot position looks just right.

I'm curious (if Mr. Stewart feels like chiming in) how much of the cover design was up to the artist, how much up to the writer, and how much up to editorial.

Graff artists have always referenced other artists (particularly comic strips and by extension comics) in pop media. "back in the day" everything from Snoopy to Boris Bodé's characters were frequently seen on subways, overpasses and walls.

as for S7 and the like... ain't seen any.

Don't flame me, but I was thinking about Grant's work and the whys and wherefores And thought maybe Weapon + = Seven Soldiers. One day we may come back to this kind of discourse, but leave it alone so it ferments, willya?

Beige vMeme, Automatic Mindset
Wild Senintels and Shining Knight
Ystin is dropped in California with no language, no weaponry, nothing, and he's got to fight to survive.

Purple vMeme, Tribal Mindset
U-Men and Guardian
Jake Jordan regains a place in the NYC system as a protector of the city by allying himself with a News service, where he fights rivalling tribes of subway pirates.

Red vMeme, Egocentric Mindset
Cassandra Nova and Zatanna
Lost and empty from living as both a celebrity and a superheor, Z takes on an enemy she created and only she can destroy, meanwhile teaching an apprentice(Martha).

Blue vMeme, Authoritarian Mindset
Huntsman and Klarion, the Witch Boy
Klarion confronts the status quo of his village and defies the hold of the submissionaries to see the truth behind the Book of Shadows.

Orange vMeme, Strategic Mindset
Fantomex and Frankenstein
Don't know much yet, but he's made up of several parts and grafts, possibly to make himself a better survivor/gameplayer - Apollyon?

Green vMeme, Communitarian Mindset
Stepford Cuckoos and Bulleteer
Don't know much yet, but she's covered in a liquid metal skin that prevents her from living as part of a community and finding true love.

Yellow vMeme, Integral Mindset
Ultimaton and Mister Miracle
Don't know much yet, but he's able to escape any situation and succeed in any environment.

Sorry for the late reply, haven't been keeping tabs on this thread.

>>>I'm curious (if Mr. Stewart feels like chiming in) how much of the cover design was up to the artist, how much up to the writer, and how much up to editorial.<<<

Grant provided the description for the cover in full - what you see is pretty much exactly what he described in an email to me.

Seems to match up well Chad.

Only one I would change is Klarion/Huntsman. Klarion/Ultimaton would seem to be a better fit, both thinking they're 'world' (ahem) is completely surronded by bedrock, both breaking through and discovering it's not and everything they know is wrong, and so on.

Klarion confronts the status quo of his village and defies the hold of the submissionaries to see the truth behind the Book of Shadows = Weapon XV/Ultimaton confronts the status quo of the World Dome and defies the hold of the Weapon Plus program to see the truth behind the Euthanasiam. Seems to fit pretty well.

Besides from remixing parts of Kirby and Moore, it seems Grant's using elements of his past work more than he usually does in Seven Soldiers. Justin=Noh Varr, Grant appearing in the comic, we could probaly go on and on. Seven Soldiers: a time capsule of the best comics shit, coming together to form something new?

Hm. Well. Point made, but I still like mine better. You should google up some Spiral Dynamics in order to better battle me. Ha!

Weapon Plus are qlippothic twisted versions of each of the vMemes. Ultimaton's thang was that he was existential, and it resulted in being eviscerated. The Seven Soldiers are each forced to confront their mindset as mythological heroes, and transition through it.

I've no idea what that must look like. If it means I get more alcoholic the further I age, then it shouldn't be too different than how I look normally. And that's not something worth puking over. Haha.

I assume most people have noticed this, but no-one's posted it.

Klarion #3 and Shining Knight #4 have both been delayed by a week.

How this effects the rest of the schedule is anyone's guess

I don't know if someone has said this before, but all of the 7S titles have kind of a 70'S Marvel feel.

I said Guardian was pretty Marvel. Know what you mean, though; Zatanna's what I'd imagine a really good Wein book'd be like.

From Klarion's thread:

Of them, Zee has the hubris (rather than a clearly heroic spirit like Ystin and Jake, or explorer's eye like Klarion, and gets punished for it - she's all about reprioritizing) and gets punished.

I'm beginning to think I'm so very right again.

Where Weapon Plus were Qlippothic variations on a single value set, the Seven Soldiers are displaying healthy transformations along the upward path.

Justin is going from Beige survival to Purple family.
Jake is going from Purple tribalism to Red heroism.
Zee is going from Red celebrity to Blue teacher.
Klarion is going from Blue authority to Orange opportunity.

And I'm assuming that:

Frankenstein is going from Orange materialism to Green humanism.
Bulleteer is going from Green egalitarianism to Yellow existentialism.
and Mister Miracle will go from Yellow chaos to Turquoise all-inclusive understanding.

Those last three sound a hell of a lot more interesting now...

I'm off to the gym, but I'm sure I can link some internet sites about Spiral Dynamics when I get back.

***

Okay I'm back.
This is a concise description of what Spiral Dynamics is... in relation to history, technological development, and social change. It's also delivered in interview form, which is easier than paragraph after paragraph of white on black text. Plus: It's 7 pages long, and may describe why Bulleteer has to die.

Spoo! Did that need a spoiler warning?

A fall of geckos

This page has a summary of the Spiral Dynamics idea of the different colours of thinking. I seem to remember Grant Morrison referring to this back when he was writing The Filth, possibly from one of Howard Blooms books, so it's quite possible that it's played some kind of inspiration in the Seven Soldiers books.

That so totally sucks. Time was flying by so nicely with a new GrantBook guaranteed every other week. I guess the good times just can't last forever.

Just poking around this thread as I've gone a bit SS mad, and I came across Grant talking about each issue of the entire MegaMaxiSeries being a stand alone story of a sort and, dang, if that isn't pretty much true. First ish: Intro. Followed by three more madcap adventures loosely tied into the overarching story. Can't tell you how much I am enjoying the prospect of this kind of storytelling. Even though I've pretty much never read an issue of any Silver Age book in my life, this is pretty much what I've imagined the experiene to be like.

Pretty much every issue so far could be distilled into a Julie Schwartzian cover, and you wouldn't even have to try too hard. Zatanna: "I've found the man of my dreams! NOW I'VE GOT TO FIGHT HIM TO THE DEATH!" Guardian: "The Pirates Of Manhattan Battle To The Death! AND THE GUARDIAN IS CAUGHT BETWEEN THEM!"

I like that a lot.

Schwartzian covers would actually be a pretty fun gimmick for this, I wish they'd thought of that!

Fingers crossed, anyway. I'm working my ass off to make it happen.

I got the script for Guardian 4 last week, and holy shit if it isn't totally awesome. I literally got chills reading it in places, and for all those who have complained that it isn't overtly tied into the Seven Soldiers storyline of the Sheeda Invasion.....wait.

from the recent ComicCon:

QUESTION (asked of some big shot at DC editorial): Are there plans for Seven Soldiers after these miniseries?

ANSWER: Yes.

Hmmm.

Cameron's tease about issue 4 sounds fantastic, by the way.

FinderWolf
19:21 / 21.07.05
Look! It's Sue Storm fighting Neb-Uh-Loh!

from Marvel's October solicits...the issue of FF, written by JMS, features the FF going up against insect-like aliens or something...?

Aertho
19:42 / 21.07.05
Bizarre.

I had figured that it was merely another starry shadowed fellow, but that's just... too close.

So anyway:

Has anyone made mention of the "trap" theme in all these 7S books?
1. JLA trapped in a lower, infant universe.
2. Whip's team baited and trapped.
3. Shining Knight trapped by Guilt.
4. Croatoan trapped with chains.
5. Guardian ALSO trapped by guilt.
6. Klarion trapped by doctrine.
7. ETC...

Mario
20:56 / 21.07.05
And Mister Miracle, who's biggest shtick is his ability to escape ANY trap.

Aertho
23:57 / 21.07.05
Zatanna traps Gwydion in Ali Ka Zoom's wardrobe, then in a snowglobe. Meanwhile, she's also psychologically trapped from using her powers.

I don't know if this has been mentioned anywhere else, but I just noticed something while flipping thorough my copy of Seven Soldiers 0. On page 22, in the bottom right panel where we see the photograph of the original Seven Soldiers, is that the original/pre-Crisis Sir Justin there in the picture? I didn't notice him there when I read this the first time because i'd never read anything with the original Sir Justing in it. But looking at this again after having read the recent issue of Justice League Unlimited that he showed up in, the resemblance is spot on. It must be him.

Every little clue and connection in this story keeps growing it exponentially larger, and with pre and post Crisis Sir Justin existing in the same universe this adds a whole new layer of cosmic/hyper-time madness to the whole series.

I love how the tangled continuity universe cross-overs of the DC universe has been embraced as part of the story of the DC universe, with all these crazy philosophies and events to theorize/explain how it all comes together. Alternate realities, alternate Earths, crisis, hypertime. Even the bleed now that Wildstorm has merged with DC.

Back to Seven Soldiers: On pages 18 & 19 of issues 0, when they're doing the intos to all the heroes on the team, there's a giant blue and green face hanging in a picture fram on the wall between Boy Blue and Dyno-Mite Dan. Its covered in circuitry and looks very familiar. I'd swear that i've seen it somewhere before, in some other comic. Does anybody know who it is? It could be just background but its very very prominantly placed and really jumps out at you.

I also noticed that the Whip is biting herself and making herslef bleed on pages 9 and 10. I think i'm going to have to read this issue again to figure that one out. ("Why all the symbolism?" asks the magazine she's reading).

Has anybody looked closely at the preview image for the cover of Manhattan Guardian #4? The bottom half of the cover is the line up either the Newsboy Army or another incarnation of the Seven Soldiers (only six of them again). . . could that be a younger version of Gimmix standing there next to the young Ali-Kazoom? (assuming that that is Ali-Kazoom)

Okay, just one more before i log off, this one personally blew me away, and is a good bit of evidence for those of us in the Castle Revolving = Outer Church camp (assuming its not just me, lol). I was reading the trade paper back for Finder: King of Cats (God I love Finder) and while i was reading through the annotations in the back i came across this little piece of info:

"Mesnie Harlequin is a name used in France for the Wild Hunt. Some sources say "harlequin" or "helliquin" is derived from "hell king" and denotes a minor demon. Mesnie Harlequin is believed to be a portent of disaster, plague, and war, and was reported to have darkened the sun twice before the outbreak of the Revolution. The Wild Hunt is said to capture harmless and benevolent spirits, changing their natures to demonic ones and adding them to their ranks."

Nebuloh and the Wild Hunt = the Harlequinade? I love it!
