>> X-MEN 3

According to Variety's new magazine V Life, Halle Berry was tired of fan pressures about her role as Storm, speaking before she signed on. "I suffered through the two movies where die-hard fans would come up to me and say, 'How come you let them make Storm wimp out all the time?'" she said. "As if I have any control. Last time I asked them to let Storm do something more than drive the plane, and she drove the plane. Storm is a formidable fighter in the comic books; she has a cape and can fly. I've never flown anywhere in two movies except behind the wheel of that plane. I'd hate to not be part of the final film, but I won't spend five months standing around, even though we all stand to get paid a lot of money this time."

Screenwriter Zak Penn is certain Ms. Berry will be pleased. "As one of the writers of the last film, I'd say it's true she ended up with mostly exposition and plane-flying," Penn said. " "There was a whole sequence at the beginning of the last film that showed the origins of her character in Africa, and it got cut simply because there are 14 characters to service. But 'X3' has a couple of big twists, and Storm is right in the center of them. The fact that Halle is a very good actress who was underused compounds the wish for her to have a better role."

more news:

August 15, 2005 - IGN FilmForce has confirmed a Web rumor that Predator actor Bill Duke has joined the cast of X-Men 3. Movies Online claims that Duke had been cast as the scientist who created the mutant-hunting Sentinel robots but that's not accurate. Sources indicate that Duke actually portrays a politician in The President's cabinet.

Duke's other acting credits include Payback, National Security and Red Dragon, which was directed by X3's Brett Ratner. Duke has directed such films as A Rage in Harlem, Deep Cover and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, as well as a slew of TV series.

IGNFF has learned of some other additions to the X3 cast. Portraying the role of Warren Worthington, Sr., father of Angel (Ben Foster), is Michael Murphy (perhaps best known to fanboys as the mayor of Gotham City in Batman Returns).

Murphy was the star of Robert Altman's famous political satire, Tanner '88, and his other credits include Live From Baghdad, Manhattan and Salvador.

Finally, British actress Olivia Williams has been cast as Dr. Moira MacTaggert. The Marvel Database Project reminds us that, in the comics, the Nobel Prize-winning Moira was a former lover of Professor X's who ran a mutant research center on Muir Island in her native Scotland. She also also the mother of the mutant known as Proteus. Moira died after discovering a cure for a new strain of the Legacy virus.

Williams' credits include The Sixth Sense (as Bruce Willis' wife), Peter Pan (as Mrs. Darling), Rushmore and Below.

Can I get a WTF?

Okay: Charlie = Patrick, Erik = Ian, X-Men = Wolvie, Storm, Cyclops... Mystique is fun and naked, and New Mutant soapyness is Rogue and Iceman. Cameos of notable characters have been fun, but necessarily brief. AS IT SHOULD BE.

Now granted, I can easily see Kelsy being brought in to the institute as faculty, now that Jean's dead — BUT what is with all these people being cast? Jesus god.

The X franchise, i fear, has gone to shit.

More casting info:

According to IGN, Oscar-nominated Iranian actress Shohreh Aghdashloo has joined the growing ensemble cast of X-Men 3. Sources advised us that she will portray a character named Dr. Rao. Fans of "Astonishing X-Men" will recall the name has popped up as a character who developed a "cure" for the mutant gene. Thanks to Rob Hezarkhani for the heads up on that.

24

It was sort of a popular way to show enthusiasm for 24 in the beginning of last season. She has a particularly way of constantly screaming her son's name.

>> Actor Patrick Stewart is quoted at StarTrek.com talking about the new mutant-themed sequel, filming now. "'We have shot five days on 'X-Men 3,'' he announced to hearty applause. 'It's wonderful,' he continued about the new movie during his Sunday appearance. 'Already some amazing things have been put in the can, some surprises -- [including] one surprise which will never even appear in a script form. We've just shot it. It's so secret, that there was never, ever allowed anything to be on paper about it. I think Brett Ratner is going to do a fantastic job on this movie. He's an extraordinary, gifted man, and I think the perfect choice to direct 'X3.' We miss Bryan Singer, of course, because this is the man that launched this franchise so outstandingly.'"

>> Meanwhile, X-Men Films had much to say about the goings on for the movie. "'X2' starlets Shauna Kain (Siryn), Bryce Hodgson (Artie), Conner Widows (Jones) and Luke Pohl (X-Kid) have joined the cast all reprising their respective roles in the sequel. The young actors are currently shooting in Victoria, Canada at the Royal Roads University. Bruce Davison's reps have told XMF that we shouldn't expect to see Senator Kelly back. Davison is currently shooting the highly anticipated mini-series 'The Triangle' (Catherine Bell, Sam Neill) he then heads straight into a movie called 'The Real Catch.' Vinnie Jones has already been in Vancouver for a costume fitting but he won't return until September to start filming his role as Juggernaut." Thanks to Rod Hezarkhani for the heads up on that.

Finally, British actress Olivia Williams has been cast as Dr. Moira MacTaggert

When the X-Men learn of Dr.Roa's proposed cure the X-Men will travel to Muir Island to seek out an old college buddy of Prof.X, a geneticist by the named of Dr. Moira MacTaggert. Upon reaching the island they will be introduced to her research partner, Dr.Henry McCoy...who will join the team for half of the movie but ultimately return to his "life-saving" research by films end.

Kelsey Grammer as Beast is something I never considered

Have you ever watched a single epidsode of Frasier? It's almost as though Grant Morrisson based his gay Beast squarely on the character of Frasier Crane...with Jean playing Daphne and Xavier as Niles.

Grammar was born to play Beast, who apparently will be sporting a black face and blue, spiky hair in the movie.

Does anyone know if Juggernaut will be a mutant or will we be treated to his ludicrious "Bands/Gem of Cytorrak lying around in a Korean...I mean Vietnamese cave" origin story?

"I am playing Dr. Cecilia Reyes," Aghdashloo said, "and she has the power to create a six inch force field around herself and ward off any attacks." When asked for details, the thesp responded, "To tell the truth, I don’t know because I have not read the script yet. Brett is still working on it."

Ugh. This is why I hate the Internet fandom rumor machine. First that whole thing with Maggie Grace playing Kitty Pryde and then this goofy back and forth about Shohreh Aghdashloo's character.

This from IGN Filmforce:
We checked with our trusty source who advised us that Aghdashloo is simply mistaken. She is indeed portraying Dr. Kavita Rao. Our insider's word has proven true in the past and we have no reason to doubt them now.

Round and round it goes. So regardless of whether she plays Reyes or Rao (or more likely a combination of both?), does anyone else think they'll try to set up a romantic interest between her doctor character and Hank McCoy?

By the way there's a fan photo of Ellen Page, the girl playing Shadowcat, here. She's got a helluva cranium, that girl. But I wasn't expecting total T&A eye candy with Kitty Pryde. She's the girl next door after all. So Page seems well cast.

They also seem to be filling this flick to bursting with mutants. Multiple Man is said to make a little appearance.

Omega Red. Adamantium chains. So dumb.

Where's Colossus?!

And this sounded awesome, I'm gutted that it didn't end up happening :

"I think that conflict needs to be expanded on and I wanted the villains to be less, sort of, what's the word? At the moment I think there's a lot of mustache-twirling in the last films and I want to get rid of that and make the villains really scary and more realistic ... I hate CGI. That's why I'm trying to do everything in-camera. Listen, you have to use CGI but I want to do as much in-camera as possible. I'm a gamer, I like video games and I feel like, when you watch movies, half the time it's like watching an extended game... You just switch off [with bad CGI] ... They want us to come out next May and that's a problem. We've got a hell of a lot to get done in 12 months. That's the only difficulty I foresee. Making a film is making a movie, it doesn't matter what the budget is."

It seems like he could've made something really good. I just checked imdb and apparently Colossus is in it aswell, I bet he has about half a minute in it though.

Sorry, I just feel really skeptical about this film.

Veteran character actor Bill Duke talked to the LA Daily News about what to expect in the next mutant minded movie. "I think you're going to find a lot of levels to this movie," Duke said. "Brett brings a certain amount of detail, and he's really committed to telling a story. Also, he takes a great deal of time with the actors and their performance. Like Kelsey Grammer - he's wonderful. He has to wear this costume that weighs at least 15 to 20 pounds" to play the blue-furred Beast. I don't think you're going to see any Frasier up in there!"

That's our Petey. Always raising his game.

Misplaced snark and ridicule aside, I am curious about the following Ratner direction, which is a bit... weird:

Sci Fi Wire talked to Stan Lee who revealed what his cameo role will be like in X-Men 3:

In X3, Lee said, "It's not one of my biggest roles, I'm a little embarrassed to say. I'm a guy in the suburbs watering the lawn with a hose, and the water as you can imagine is coming out of the hose and going down on the lawn. Then one that has power to move things mentally"—Jean Grey, played by Famke Janssen—"she's driving, and she gestures at my house, and all of sudden the water goes up instead of down. And remember Sunset Boulevard, where Gloria Swanson says, 'I'm ready for my closeup, Mr. DeMille'? Well, it's supposed to be a big closeup of my face. And I say, 'What the f--k?' And every time I say it, [director] Brett Ratner said, 'Make it lower, Stan.' And at the end, I whisper it. So I don't know if it will come out at all."

Is this an attempt to make the X-Men movies harder? More street?
