Golden Age? I don't think so.

FF version? I know he had a power overload at one time and caused major damage to ESU, but I don't recall any casualties. There was a fan of his that lit himself on fire, once.

Think this is part of the origin story of the Golden Age Human Torch, the android one. Riffing on the Prometheus myth (both the classical, fire-stealing hubris of Man story and the Frankenstein: Prometheus Unbound creator / created tale), the android Human Torch inspires terror and hatred among New Yorkers by accidentally starting fires before he learns to control his developing powers.

The Frankenstein fear-and-ignorance elements come in the shape of angry Manhattanites - playing the part of the pitchfork-weilding mob of villagers - who entomb him in a concrete sarcophagus and bury him. He escapes and, although conflicted by righteous fury at his treatment by the small-minded populace, becomes a superhero, saving lives and changing minds along the way.

As an extra the FF Human Torch had a short-lived, fairly recent series that involved an old high school rival of his who was seriously burnt by Johnny back when he was still in high school.
Not a bad series, and I think the first arc at least is available in Digest form.

I didn't really read the recent Tsunami Human Torch series, mostly because it had the worst kind of Hubert Ramos style art.

I don't do marvel much. But i noticed that May Parker is alive, and last time i was reading Spiderman she died. So i find out that it's because Norman Osborne paid an actress to pretend to die to freak spidey out.

So, i was wondering, where was May all that time?

This really shatters suspension of belief for me. It's jumping a friggin' million sharks.

IM SURE THERE WAS A FUNERAL!!!!!!!! DID SHE PRETEND TO BE EMBALMED TOO!!!!!!!!!

Actually, Peter misheard that she was going to go on a diet and freaked out.

Now, does she still know he's Spiderman, as revealed by JMS in his first arc? I'm just wondering that if the Spidey reveals who he is to the world in Civil War is going to be undone, whether Aunt May will also forget?

What is the story with Professor X? Stripped of his telepathy and walking again? How many times has this happened? It is interesting to see that in future covers Prof X is back in his wheelchair again and a part of the illuminati, does he get his telepathy back while he is in outer space ? I've seen the ad for uncanny x-men 47? where Shiar tech is looking like it his having some fun with him at his own expense so what is the story?

Mario
18:19 / 22.09.06
Let's see.

Born with powers, able to walk
Spine broken by Lucifer (an alien, not a demon), paralyzed.
Infected by Brood, mind transplanted in clone body (which is initially unable to walk for psychosomatic reasons).
Back broken by Shadow King, back in chair.
"Healed" by Xorn/Magneto/Skippy the Plot Device.
Healing undone by said being.
Healed again by Wanda during "No more mutant" plot device, but powers removed.
Presently in space, discovering that nobody likes him.

As for the future... who knows?

I believe the Illuminati series is what they call a 'retcon' series, where the group's actions and reactions to major Marvel events (e.g. the Kree-Skrull War, Secret Wars, etc.) is depicted. So, it's not any indication of anything.

As for Xavier, Mario's covered most've it; he's also married and since been divorced by alien decree to the Shi'Ar empress Lilandra.

So was he ever married to anyone else other than Lilandra? I know about his interst in Moria McTagert and Haller ( who legion came from)Why did she divorce him? Was it because he lost his telepathic powers or was it because he unleased Vulcan on the universe? Or was it because Cassie Nova(porn star name?)raped and pilaged everyone in his body. there are a lot of unanswered questions about old Chuckie. Next we'll find out that he was a real dick to Cain Marko causing him to become the Juggernaut.

Who added those two jutting spars of bone above the jaw on The Punisher's skull emblem? They weren't there at first. When did they appear?

I only ask because, as a design feature, they're way cool.

So was he ever married to anyone else other than Lilandra?

Nope. He was a swinging bachelor.

Why did she divorce him?

Or was it because Cassie Nova(porn star name?)raped and pilaged everyone in his body.

Basically, that. It was politically dangerous for her to be linked to someone who keeps f'ing up the Empire.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
14:22 / 23.09.06
See, it's okay for her to invade the Kree empire because she's the Emperess, it's not okay for Charles to be captured and duplicated by War Skrulls as an attempt to get to Lilandra, nor is okay for him to have his mind swapped with his neverborn twin sister. Obviously a sense of proportion is something Charles never got round to explaining to the alien as they were too busy with 'this Earth thing called kissing'.

21:49 / 23.09.06
I dunno, that seems realistic to me, just like Earth politics. George Bush invades random middle eastern country - fine. George Bush dates someone who turns out to be an alien duplicate bent on destroying the US - shit hits fan.

The Falcon

In any case, the last issue of Uncanny pretty much outright states that Lilandra, with her hereditary crown, is essentially a figurehead only. There's a sort of Grand Vizier figure (I think all this is new?) - he might actually be a vizier, I'll have to check. Never trust a vizier.

Lilandra is aces, regardless, and so are the ridiculously loyal Imperial Guard. Notably her wikipedia entry utilises the greatest X-Men cover EVAR which I'm going to post now for the sake of it:

Mario
12:33 / 24.09.06
There's always been a Vizier character in Shi'ar stories. He gets killed fairly often, but they either have a bunch of clones, or he has a large family.

And I suspect that Lilandra's figurehead status is a relatively new wrinkle, probably post-Morrison. She was always pretty powerful before (indeed, probably the most respected potentate in the galaxy... that's why she presided over the trial of Galactus)

have just read the universe / earth / paradise X trades from the library at the weekend, have to say it is proably the worse marvel output i have ever seen, reminded me of chuck austin in the inability to tell a story and clunky dialogue trying to express something profound but totally half arsed and the story read like it had been cut up and rearranged randomly in places. it clearly needed the large amounts of explanatory dialogue to make any kind of sense but even then it just made my eyes bleed.

anyhow, my question, besides why did anyone write those good reviews on the back, is:

is it fair to say that if a marvel title has a painted cover it will almost certainly suck ass? can you judge a comic book by it's cover?

This Sunday
19:09 / 04.10.06
I liked some of the 'painted cover' Marvel comics. The first issue (of two) of Ellis' 'Ruins' was quite fun, and the DnA 'Conspiracy' was alright. I liked some of the writing in 'Marvels' but Ross' art has never done much for me. Busiek's painted 'Strange Tales' had one major drawback for me, otherwise I would've totally adored it: The rez kids wearing buckskins and beaded headgear. Which I may've called him on, years ago, and he pinned it on the artist - somebody did, so it was either Busiek or the editor or well it was a panel years ago and enough of that.

The rest of them? Does 'Elektra: Assassin' count as painted? That very much did not suck. Out of order redialogued pages and everything.

Course, I liked the first part of '... X' anyway. But I don't think it made a great deal of sense, just streamlining everything. The reason I got into corporate comics as a kid as the messiness of it all. There should be like eight billion reasons just for why the Inhumans have an Inhuman dog, or why the Celestials are all big hollow armors except that one that was a naked woman chasing after Franklin Richards. Let hypertime reign! And/Or rain!

Have the changes made to Venom during his Tsunami series been ignored?

What changes were made to Venom?
Right now, I believe that its Mac Gargan, former Scorpion, in the suit. Looks like he's in the Thunderbolts right now.
The word is that after CIVIL WAR, Spidey will be back in a black suit. I assume he's going to take on the symbiote again, considering the need for a good movie tie-in next summer.

I'm pretty sure that entire Tsunami series was quietly swept under the couch.

This Sunday

Back in the days when there was a 'Hellstorm' title from Marvel, just before Warren Ellis started in, I believe, or just after, there was a guy, possibly Native American, who was killed for being all magicky, and it was noted that he had been in a regular relationship with a certain heroine who would go unnamed. And she did, which leads me to here, and asking simply: Who was she?

Also, since the apparent modus operandi of X, these days, is to invalidate and utterly confuse everything a certain Grant Morrison concocted during his NXM run... and then confuse it some more... has anyone got so anal, that they've explained how the Cuckoos are Emma Frost clones, but are still blondes and about a bra size bigger than the original Emma, in her pre-Hellfire days of youth?

And if they aren't a Weapon, who/what was? (Nobody write Xorn, okeh? I couldn't handle it.)

Mario
20:44 / 21.11.06
1. She was never named. Ellis invented the character, but never bothered to give him a real backstory.

2. Apparently, bleaching your hair affects your DNA.
(Marvel would _never_ ignore established backstories, after all....)

3. They are Weapons. Weapon Plus is the bunch that cloned them.

The FF is a family. The X-Men are a school. The Avengers... hang out together because they always have.

And with this dynamism comes flexibility. You can have comedy duos, love triangles, and characters who simply can't STAND each other. Pretty much any story you want to tell can be told. And that's a tremendously powerful storytelling tool.

the best thing about the Avengers is that they all hang out in a mansion together in full costume,

It is still a solidly produced 70s superhero tale, albeit a slightly existential one where these mighty heroes face down a one-man apocalypse that they realise they haven't a chance of beating.

The idea of belonging to this great circle of heroes who'll stand up for you no matter what, hanging out in a mansion with a butler and everything paid for by Tony Stark, having files and answers to everything at the tip of your fingers in those big rooms filled with consoles, wearing those great 4-colour costumes and having nobody laugh at you!

So the Avengers are the Marvel equivalent of the 70's-80's Legion of Super-Heroes?

Here's one that gave me pause recently: Wolverine's teeth. Not covered in adamantium, right? They always look pretty pearly white to me. So theoretically, you can kick Wolverine's teeth out, yes? If so, could he...well, grow new teeth, I suppose?

I nearly had to stop doing the dishes and have a sit-down after thinking on that one.

Adamantium teeth as far as I am aware, with an enamel coating. I'd guess he needs to get them touched up by a dentist every time he gets torched by a Sentinel.

You could send yourself mad thinking about wolverines powers. If he you scooped his brain out through his eyes, Or nose (as the egyptians used to i believe), would his brain go back with his former memories?

Well, it's been (kinda) stablished in the Age of Apocalypse taht Wolvie's healing factor cannot regenerate lost limbs (and probably organs, bar the liver, I suppose) or else his hand would have grown back. I guess that, if you forge a adamantium (or even better, vibranium) bullet that can pierce through Logan's skull, he'd be as dead as anyone.

As for the teeth, they must have some healing capacity, or sels they would be all yellow by now, after a century plus of cigar smoking. Also, never seen hium brush his teeth.
