They're all in the States, so they've got a history of lynching in one direction or another, and surely racially-motived violence, besides. And a history of racial scare tactics. At its lightest, it's cases of people who can find their participation funny because they, themselves, nor any relatives in direct memory have been attacked or threatened or suffered under such methods, not because no one in their geographical area has any such memories or familial history (at least on the terminal end of a rope).
There's a difference between ignorance, and assholish lack of empathy. Ignorant can go A sees B fall down, and not knowning B is social pariah, helps them up or A nods to B while passing on street but without knowing there's a history of acceptable or writ-off violence to a certain B, A can't really be expected to suddenly pick up on the behaviour/history they're ignorant of, and utilize it against B in an abstracted threat-form, and for no reason or concern if it's acceptable (to whatever degree) when they understand it's not acceptable to do such to other A-type people. |
