Y'know, I had ample right to kick off at the use of "cripple" in this thread. Not because I'm a RIGHT ON MY SISTERS WE ARE ONE STABFUCK THE BIGOTS Millie Tant/Rick from the Young Ones/[certain barbelith poster who needs anger management and a strong sedative] type of guy, but because I'm actually, well , a cripple (dashing pimp limp these days, but still).
I didn't kick off (nor did I bat an eyelid when someone deployed "spacker" in the photo thread), and here is why.
Some people will be unplesant. They will make unplesant jokes and use unplesant words.
Now, as someone who had to cope with wankers yelling SPACKER out of cars at me and such as a kid, I realise that using these words generaly need not always imply deep bigotry, rather that it more often implies recklessness or ignorance ("nigger" and "kike" are a very different kettle of fish I'd say, since they're targeted racially these days and aren't often applied to any kind of social stereotypes beyond the targer ethnicity).
I don't think going after every single un-PC word is a productive way of making a more equal society. I think if it's mishandled it can be *seen* as being overly anal and have a counterproductive effect.
Just my two cents, mind.
On a similar note I've been wanting to point out for aaaaggggeeessss that "chav" and "townie" are used as insults by working class kids far more often than bymiddle class kids, since they apply to an anti-social tribal element that's more likely to be encountered by working class kids. It's simply not a class insult. Yes, it is an unfair stereotype, but there's not much class warfare to be found, as most people around here seem to assume in the threads I've read around here.
(Please note: if the above scans horribly please be kind; I have not slept) |
