Got KotOR in the end. I'm only a couple of hours in, but so far it's playing exactly as you'd expect a Bioware Star Wars RPG to. It's Baldur's Gate 3D with robots. That's not necessarily a bad thing, obviously, but it seems to be lacking any real spark of inspiration. Other possible downers: the frame rate isn't all that (we're talking about the Xbox version here); you're led by the hand too much in the initial stages; the fact that it's not top-down anymore makes controlling all your party separately a bit of a pain in the arse, especially in combat (so much so that I've been leaving the AI to take care of all members of my party in battle except the leader).
On the plus side, it feels very Star Wars (even if the '4,000 years before the films' stuff isn't even slightly convincing - you kind of expect societies to undergo a little more change in 4,000 years than this one does... fashions are exactly the same, technology seems to have already reached its peak, and so on).
Like I say, I'm still in the earliest stages of the game, so all these worries might be wiped away in a short while.
Also playing Colin McRae Rally 4 (Xbrick again - finally getting some use out of the thing). Racing games seem to get short shrift around here, which is a shame because this is an excellent example. You have to be subliminally aware of your co-driver shouting out his pace notes, as making an effort to concentrate on them generally leads to much confusion. The handling model is superb, it all looks lovely and it's bloody difficult on anything other than 'normal'. Very much enjoying this - first CMR title I've played since the original. |
