Two years too late, but I bought "Neverwinter Nights" yesterday after finally playing the demo and loving it. I'm only a little of the way in, but I know what the fuss is about now. The play system is great and the story looks pretty interesting.

Still, what it does most is make me miss playing "Pools of Radiance" and "Curse of the Azure Bonds" on my Commodore 64.

I am being more sorely tempted by the evil gods of Xbox. Halo, Soul Calibur II and Knights of the Old Republic are calling my name. Repeatedly. In sultry horny Scottish accents. It's that bad.

On the computer, though, I'm still playing True Combat which is one of the best semi-realistic action style mods I've played (even if the community has about 30 players and I'm still rubbish, hitting team-mates at distance. Still, my grenading has got better). I've also started playing Diablo II, which I'm enjoying because, basic as it is, it is Rogue for the 21st century. Clicky clicky bashy.

Wait on the Xbox, Paleface. It's still only really worth getting for Halo, which really is as good as everyone says. I'm tempted by KotOR, but there are a lot of people claiming that the constant disc accessing (sounds like everything that can be is streamed off the disc, rather than loaded into memory) is damaging their consoles. Need to find out if the UK one does the same thing before I buy it. Soul Calibur's coming out on all three of the machines, so that one's sorted (I'll be getting the GC one, simply because the exclusive character is much more interesting than some numpty from Tekken or bleeding Spawn). There's some interesting looking stuff lined up for future release, but nothing coming that soon that I could honestly recommend anyone buy one asap. Hell, mine's not even been turned on since I exhausted Burnout 2 a couple of months ago.

It's rumoured to be coming down to £99 in time for Christmas over here, too, so you might want to hold on for any similar price cuts where you are.

I kinda liked Neverwinter Nights. I liked the movement, and there was a point in it where I thought it got pretty good, but it is quite flat compared to the Bladur's Gate series, to say nothing of Planescape.

I'm looking forward to KotOR on the PC. Not sure I'll be able to afford it soon, though. And I'm obviously on a Star Wars roll since I am looking very closely at Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (sequel to Jedi Outcast). Apparently you can dual wield lightsabers!!! Dude! Can a mortal get any closer to godhood?

Keep forgetting to pick up Soul Caliber II. Dammit, when did work become a priority? Oh well.

Played a bit of Wind Waker and thought it was wonderful. Need to pick it back up since it hasn't been too long since the last time I played and still remember what to do.

On to... Silent Hill 3. Went through it once and I was fairly impressed. Nice little sequel to the first game though I didn't find it quite as traumatizing as the 2nd one. The team did quite a good job of keeping the same feel and managed to make the experience more cohesive. It's all in game graphics, which keeps the gameplay and cinema nice and tight together. And as per usual, you find yourself where you want to be going even though you're running around lost. Also, It still feels like you're using the weapons you control which makes the game that much more immersive. And the audio is just great.

For those of you who thinks Eternal Darkness is scary, it's got absolutely nothing on this series. In fact, pick up the whole series. The two others should set you back some sleep and $20 US a piece.

And before I forget... a SH movie is now in the making (no longer a rumor). Let's hope the crew on this gets it right. Everything one needs for a good horror flick is right there. Just needs a bit of rounding out since the character types, environment, music, etc. is just perfect. And, PLEASE no fucking kung-fu.

Other than this, I'm curious to see which of you have picked up some other games. Anyone care to comment on the newest Contra, Shinobi, or Tenchu?

I realised last night that the reason I don't play RPGs any more is because I don't have the time. RPGs can't be played for an hour here or 15 minutes there, they need real effort. Last night I sat down and decided to waste/devote 3 hours to Neverwinter and lo! it was great. Those games seem so much better when you play for an extended session. I managed to complete one of the quests and learned a fair bit more about the plot. You can have a quick game of Tekken, you can't have a quick game of Neverwinter.

Luckily I have some time off work coming up so 12 hour game-a-thon, here I come!

Yes, it really is that good.

Haven't played as Link yet, though. I'm saving that up.

The horrible amount of lag combined with the periods spent healing/walking has killed Star Wars galaxies for me. It sits in the box while I play Madden 2004 and think about Jedi Academy. Can you sell used copies of online games? Can other people sign up with a used copy?

Soul Calibur 2! I've never played an SC game before, and it's pretty fun. Saddo I am, Link is my favourite at present. I'm rubbish with fighting games, and usually only take the time to learn with one character. I think it's something to do with my memory.

Anyway, I feel like I'm having another surge of gaming days, with the coldness and the fact that I'm working and can afford things. Which is good, 'cos it looks like there's a bunch coming up... F-Zero, Rebel Strike or whatever it's called, the new tony hawk and of course Mario Kart, all of which I am quite excited about. Oh and, Viewtiful Joe. And I think Return of the King looks like it will be a lot of fun (I did enjoy the other one a tad. I know it's a bit shallow... but Helms Deep! And all that shite! And I dont like LOTR that much... )

And you know, that's already more games than I know what to with all in a couple of months. I'll probably have to write them all down so i don't forget, and then spend all my hard-earned money in one go. Damn it.

I feel like writing my parents a Christmas list.

I just lost my character twice in a deepish dungeon in Diablo II, and I'm getting pissed off. There's some really nice clobber down there that I'm trying to rescue, gah.

Am holding on the Xbox front... cannot wait to return to the stage of history and PUNISH people with my Mitsurugi-cheese. It's all about the lifting combos

P.N. 03 . I'm about finished with the easy mode. I just need to finish up the last level and I'm done. It's gotten a bit repetitive and there was a "plot twist" in the tenth level that completely came out of left field, but it's a nice enough way to kill 30 minutes or so here and there and it satisfies my need for some mindless shoot 'n kill fun.

Got KotOR in the end. I'm only a couple of hours in, but so far it's playing exactly as you'd expect a Bioware Star Wars RPG to. It's Baldur's Gate 3D with robots. That's not necessarily a bad thing, obviously, but it seems to be lacking any real spark of inspiration. Other possible downers: the frame rate isn't all that (we're talking about the Xbox version here); you're led by the hand too much in the initial stages; the fact that it's not top-down anymore makes controlling all your party separately a bit of a pain in the arse, especially in combat (so much so that I've been leaving the AI to take care of all members of my party in battle except the leader).

On the plus side, it feels very Star Wars (even if the '4,000 years before the films' stuff isn't even slightly convincing - you kind of expect societies to undergo a little more change in 4,000 years than this one does... fashions are exactly the same, technology seems to have already reached its peak, and so on).

Like I say, I'm still in the earliest stages of the game, so all these worries might be wiped away in a short while.

Also playing Colin McRae Rally 4 (Xbrick again - finally getting some use out of the thing). Racing games seem to get short shrift around here, which is a shame because this is an excellent example. You have to be subliminally aware of your co-driver shouting out his pace notes, as making an effort to concentrate on them generally leads to much confusion. The handling model is superb, it all looks lovely and it's bloody difficult on anything other than 'normal'. Very much enjoying this - first CMR title I've played since the original.

Still waiting for Here Comes the Pain, next month though....

Played the demo for the new Prince of Persia yesterday, how cool is that running along the wall feature? Not sure about turning back the time feature didn't need that back in my day.

Tried playing FFX again but still can't beat Seymour when he appears at the cliff with all the snow, bastard.

And Vice City still can't beat that guy in the race so he'll drive for you, does anyone have any hints??

Final Fantasy Tactics for the GBA is more fun than a buttered weasel. I'm not going to get *any* work done now. I'll be disappearing into the toilets so often that people will think I'm trying to wank myself to death.

Whilst the guy has a higher acceleration, your car has a much higher top speed, so the important thing during this mission is to take is steadily and stay on the road. If you're very lucky, you may be able to get him to make a mistake, or, even better (which is what happened to me), get the police chasing you to ram his car off the course for a few seconds. If at any point you get ahead of him, and assuming you don't subsequently crash, you've pretty much got the race in the bag.

sometimes I go into this chat room because it has pacman in it. I always lose really fast, so I only play one game per two weeks or so.

that's about all I can handle, really. and besides, I'd rather buy a couple of music cds than a video game any day.

Playing Baldur's Gate II at the moment. It's deeply wonderful but has managed to piss me off for a few basic reasons:

1) My two favourite NPCs in the game, Montaron and Xzar, are rapidly killed off.

2) Fighter characters are capped in abilities so that they don't fundamentally improve past 20th level.

3) Viconia will not initiate romance with you if you are a pure-blooded Elf (no matter how Eeevil you are).

As I've just picked up Tales of the Sword Coast for a £1 I'm actually considering using a character mod like Gate/Shadow Keeper to make my character human, do the extra levels in TotSC and *then* restart BGII. It seems like cheating but I don't think I can bear to restart the whole damn thing *again*.

Another retro kick - Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising, for the Warren Ellis script (deeply, comically ripped off from pretty well everywhere), the Tom Baker, Paul Darrow and Glynis Barber voiceovers, and the bio-chips. Bio-chips, I tell you. Reminds me of playing Rogue Trooper on the Spectrum.

A friend gave me "The Thing" for my birthday, but I haven't dared play it yet.

Waiting in anticipation for the release of Viewtiful Joe tomorrow. If you guys haven't seen it yet, you don't know what you'll be missing. From the vids I've seen and the talk of some people who have played imports, it's incredible.

And since Gamecubes are $100 US now, there's less reason to hold off.

Word. I swore I'd never get another "new" video game that was just a re-release of an old one with some "new" stuff made from the same old code (a la Doom -DoomII), but Academy is the shit. Especially if you have outdated tech. Love that Q3 engine. I'm dusting off the level-editing skills for some tauntaun jousting action. Love the jawas, fleeing rabid sandpeople. Love the speeder bikes. Love the fucking rancor. And playing as the pug-ugliest character in Star Wars doesn't hurt either (love that Greedo).

I know I just posted, but that one had spoilers in and this one doesn't, even though in a roundabout way that one leads into this one... (do you see?)

So, anyhoo, now I'm taking a wee break (no, not a pitstop) to savour the delights of "UFO: Aftermath". Okay, it's X-COM but prettier. But X-COM was always my favourite game back in the good old Amiga days.

And Haus: PLAY THE THING!!! DO IT!!! BE SCARED!!! AND LOVE IT!!!

Star Wars: KotOR gets much, much, much better. The first ten hours (well, ten hours if you bother with all the off-shoot plots) is just trainer. Rather too much trainer, that.

Once you get off Taris though, it all improves hugely. The sense of freedom that's missing initially suddenly appars from out of nowhere, the game quickly discovers a sense of humour (SW nerds are likely to be a bit freaked by just how funny some bits are, especially with certain characters and Jedi skills in your party) and it introduces sci-fi staples (the builder civilisation, the alien artifact) that have become tired cliches in other media into a universe that's never even considered them before, making both seem a lot fresher than they have for ages.

The controls are also superb (after the initial period of clumsiness). Bioware are going to have to be very clever when it comes to transforming them into a keyboard/mouse interface.

I like. I like a lot. True, there are many problems (extremely limited character creation when you start a new game, unfortunate - but not fatal - bugs and glitches, a lot of the bad design decisions present in the BG series being carried over into this), but it's the first game in months that's turned me away from my GBA.
