I get the feeling I fluked that boss, Sav; it was only the last time I knocked the dishes out that I had to search for the correct tube, having been stood in front of them the previous three times.

M:P is astonishing, though. Just like with Zelda:OOT, they've managed to translate the feel of the controls and atmosphere from 2 to 3D almost perfectly. It's less a shooter and more an adventure, a bit like a first-person take on the original Tomb Raider, which is probably why you're taken with it, Trij.

I just got myself the thermal visor last night and am going back through the levels I've already explored to see if there's anything I've missed so far. One problem with it, though, is that I've got a horrible feeling that I managed to miss scanning something in the Space Pirate ship in the intro chapter, and because it's the only bit you can't return to once it's over I'm not going to be able to get the 100%. Gah.

Oh yeah: turn the HUD help messages off in the options after you get past that intro chapter. They're intrusive and unnecessary, and lead to the same problem as Metroid:Fusion suffered from; namely, the feeling that you're being led by the hand. They only detract from the game - it's much more fun spending time figuring out where you're supposed to go next yourself. Super Metroid didn't need them, and nor does this.

You know I think I might just go for a Gamecube it'll sit nicely ontop of the PS2, can someone in the UK do my a big favour and look on the Game site and tell me how much a Gamecube pack is? You know one of those console and 3 game sort of things? Sites banned for me but if the price is right I'll go there after work today....

Pleeze?

Game Cube and a copy of Metroid Prime = 130 quid (available everywhere). I went for a 2 game version from Game for 155 quid (Metroid and Super Monkey Challenge, both fantastic). Looking about, that seems to be the standard offer for two game packages.

You might want to check out Toys R Us. Last time I looked they were doing a massive pack featuring 5 or 6 games, steering wheel and 2 controllers or summat for 190 quid or thereabouts.

Mecha-Randy:

How did you know it was the correct tube? Is there only one you can get into? I feel silly asking but I don't want to spend an hour giving myself RSI without defeating the thing.

It was the only one left in the arena - it looks like when you bomb them they disappear. If you're not next to it straight off, switch to the morph ball and spin around the arena until you find it - quicker than running, plus easier to see your entire surroundings.

I also found it easier to switch to the ball in order to get to the sun dishes in time, by the way.

Wahey! I forgot all about this thread. I've been playing Metroid too, but unfortunately I completed it yesterday. Doh. Only had the bugger a week. I put it down to the fact it wouldn't leave me alone.

Oh and Randy: don't worry about the scanning thing. Getting 100% scanned *spoilerspoiler* etc just unlocks an extra gallery. 100% on items is what yer after, for *spoiler?* the bestest ending and all that. Unless you really want that gallery.

Anyway, it's a fine game, although I'm a bit dissapointed it's over. I think I might play it through again on hard sometime. Not anytime soon, because I have to get things done. It's a really beautiful game though, and really not a fps in any way. ha. I like to think of it as Zelda if you had a big gun, and it was Doom. But better. You know what I mean. Like Mario if you had a big gun, but like one big dungeon in Zelda. Like Metroid, really. it really grows on you as well, as it slowly introduces prettier scenery, then prettier effects, then prettier weapons and then hideous nastys to blow up. It just keeps getting better right until the end. I always loved Samus' face being reflected in the visor. It's a very immersive game, although I can see how it might not be very instant with a lot of people. I feel sorry for the people who buy this game thinking it looks like a hardcore blast fest. But it does atmosphere better than anything else I've played.

Oh, and I found that plant boss a complete bastard. Much harder than some of the later ones. What I didn't realise is that you can stun the bastard before getting the dishes. I'm a dumbass. I wouldn't worry about the tubes though, it should all be pretty obvious, and in morph ball mode you should make it quick enough. I think I was almost always either right in front of them or pretty near.

One last thing: are Argos and Dixons still doing Cubes cheap? If they are, they'd be yr best bet. I know Argos were doing cubes with a game and memory card for about £80. But that deal might be over now... but Dixons are cleaning out all their cube stock so they're going cheap too. And because of all that and Metroid the lowly little cube actually outsold the PS2. Which is not wholly interesting, I grant you, but it does show how good a deal that was.

Thanks for the tips, Randy and Suedehead. The f***er will rue the day!

Sounds like my experiences of Metroid Prime are similar to everyone else's. I was slightly dubious at first; annoyed at the inability to look around and move at the same time, and expecting the scan business to become irritating, but it's amazing how quickly you get used to it (has anyone else found themselves walking round IRL wanting to scan distant objects for info?) Didn't really become fully engaged until after defeating the very first boss, when the pace suddenly picks up. First "I love this game" moment: blasting the wee lizard swarms at close range and getting green slime all over the visor. Second moment: realising I was actually enjoying it, rather than torturing myself. Haven't screamed "jump, you dozy pr**k!" at the screen once. Yet.

Is it worth it?

I am playing the second game in the Arc the Lad RPG trilogy, and I am still not happy with the battle interface, the characters are bland and have no personalities and such, but the game is getting better as I play through it, showing that the makers were "learning as they went".

I don't think it should have gotten the "4 out of 5" reviews it gets, unless things pick up soon and the story starts being more than "Get the five stones and bring them to me and I'll kill the Big Bad."

Then, after this, it's back into the Final Fantasy pool...I'm goign to set aside a month of so of spare time and flay FFX.

Eternal Darkness is very much worth it. I've got a couple of complaints, but they're fairly minor - the lifespan of the game is artificially increased by making you play through it three times and the 'lighting up the runes in the underworld' section that you go through twice each game becomes seriously boring. Other than that, it's pretty durned good. Nice Lovecraftian feel to it, decent storyline and acting.

Suede> I'm one of those wankers who *needs* to get 100% of everything.

Haven't found myself scanning anything IRL yet, but I dare say it's only a matter of time. Last game to do that to me was Tony Hawks' 3, ending up with me trying to figure out how I'd keep a continuous grind going on kerbs/walls/lamposts/pensioners waiting at bus stops when I was walking down the street.

I've also just aquired this. The unit and building modelling is a little shoddy (at least when compared to something like Age of Mythology), but the gameplace is rather fun. Nice to see the Warcraft series now allowing you to play something other than Orcs and Humans.

I got really bored(really fast) of the computer AI in warcraft, but I would like to play it LAN-style sometime. I picked up Return to Castle Wolfenstein in a back bin, and I'm hooked. I only play one or two maps (tram and beach) because, well, I don't have time to learn all the little objectives on all the maps. I am a solid medic, though, and I'm finding the teamplay powerfully addictive. Look for "friendlymonkey" on a tram server, and kill me.

I saw a game today that may give me cause to buy a console : "wolverine's revenge". I know it's probably a Pile of Marketing, but damn, it looks fun. Oh, and the new Indiana Jones game for XBox.... I want. You throw me the idol, I throw you the whip.

Yeah, but have you actually had a go on the Indy title? Not good. Not good at all. The framerate jerks like a schoolboy with a Kays catalogue and it plays like The Worst Tomb Raider Game In The World... Ever!

I second that. Indy game passable until I realised that I was very glad I hadn't payed money for it. And god it was monotonous.

Randy: I used to be like that. But mario sunshine stopped that. I traded it for Metroid... and good lord, I just don't see the point of getting everything. For one thing whenever I scan the bosses I end up getting beaten by them and secondly... how many missles do I neeeed? Anyway, I finished the game to get the second best ending.

*spoillllleeeeeeeeeeers*
You see her face! She's pretty! (For a computer game.)
Although I hope that when you finish the game with 100% everything that the only difference isn't just seeing her in a bikini as with all the other games... actually, I've looked, but I'll let you find out yourself. ooooooOOOOoooo!

Anyway, I allowed myself the pleasure of pre-ordering the next biggie a while back. Zelda! Oh yes! Hopefully I'll get the bonus Ocarina disc as well. Double whammy! I've never played that before either. Yikes!

I don't know why I'm writing like that. I pre-ordered mostly for the disc, but also as an incentive to finish the project I'm working on and thus free up the time to play it in May. And hooray, I only have two more pages to paint! I think I'll take a week, playing in the sun... with all the windows open.. on the open sea.... ahhhhh. This was one of the problems with Metroid, when I was playing it, it was dead sunny... and it didn't seem to work. I realise I didn't have to play it, but I wanted to. It just seems like more of a winter game. But Zelda, and Mario... always feel a bit summery. Adventure-y. Fantasy adventure-y. Yes, I think I also prefer my elves with swords to spacships and guns.

Anyway, it looks absolutely fanatastic, like playing a goddamn cartoon. And a well animated one at that. And as for the other game (hopefully) well I'd always wanted to play it, but I unfortunately sold my n64 before it came out. You may have noticed I'm looking foward to this greatly, but I shant think about it for now, as I have work to do!

Oh no, the theme tune's stuck in my head... but Zelda! With Pirates!!! As a cartoon! I cannot think of a better combination. Unless you were to dip the whole thing in chocolate and eat it. Alas, I think that would be missing the point.

You're not the only one, gridley, although I left Silver half way through and haven't got a clue what I was supposed to be doing at the time. Can't be arsed with starting it all from scratch, either. Not when Tactics Ogre is glued into my GBA.

I had a nice surprise when I went to the bank earlier today, so swiftly ran out and bough Gitaroo Man on the PS2 and Dead or Alive Volleyball. Gitaroo is wonderful - I've got a real soft spot for bemani stuff anyway. It's a little like SNK's Cool Cool Toon, but wins extra points for Koei actually giving it an official PAL release.

Bought DoA Volleyball on the strength of the Edge review and hated it for the first half an hour - couldn't see the point of the thing and couldn't get my head around the actual mechanics of the way they'd implemented the volleyball itself. Came back to it a couple of hours later and... I'm totally hooked. The whole premise seems hugely iffy at first, but give it time and you find yourself desperately trying to get enough cash for that hair clip that you're missing, or that pair of trainers. More addictive than gambling for sugar-coated crack.

Hmm lets see, Sims, rainbow six metal gear, any FF, and Kingdom Hearts. Half Life comes out once a year :-)

I remember when I first played that I used to think it was called HL because thats how long it took to clock it, jeez its a long one first time round. I was on the cliff side, first time you get to take out a helicopter with a laser guided rocket. I didn't know it was laser guided. I fired I turned and ran the rocket did the same, boom. The rocket seemed to go everywere but at the chopper, boom. Eventually after about half an hour I hit the stupid thing enough, boom.
It was half three in the morning when I shut everything down to darkness and climbed my naked ass to my bedroom (my system was in a box cuboard off the room). The distant sound of a police helicopter made me instinctually reach for a rocket launcher, boom.

Randy: how long does it take for Tactics Ogre to get going? I have a real problem with Jap RPGs, strategy or nay, and the beginning of TO is really weak. I might give it a bit longer, though, because it's still far better than most other stuff I'd played.

Waiting to try GBA FF:Tactics. Someone ought to bring out a Front Mission for GBA; that rocked.

Dude, you *really* need to check yourself.

Meanwhile, after flirtations with CM4, which may actually have become so complex that I can no longer be bothered, I've got hooked on X-Com:Apocalypse, which only runs on my old computer. I remember having exactly the same problem with the first X-Com game - the actual process of playing becomes more and more monotonous as you grind through in search of the conclusion. Addictive but not actually enjoyable...

I have put Metroid Prime aside for the moment so that I can play The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker . This game is loads of fun. It hasn't gotten to the point where I've gotten frustrated said screw it and looked at a walkthrough. I've only gotten to the third island, haven't fought a boss yet and still have three hearts. The only complaint I really have about the game is the stupid wind waker itself. I hate that damned metronome and actually staying in rhythm. I just want to push the buttons real quick like in Ocarina of Time.

Paleface: To be honest, I got into it right from the off, but then RPG tactics titles always tend to appeal to me - blame it on my first console RPG experience being Shining Force II. Give it a little time; once you gain a couple of levels, change the unit types of some of your party and figure out how to use the Peruasion skill properly it starts to eat away at your life. The plot is standard fare and the batlles themselves are a bit simpler than similar games on full-on consoles, but it's the best of its kind on GBA. Thinking about it, it might be the only one of its kind on GBA...

Dude, you *really* need to check yourself.

You're right. I meant the point more in gameplay terms, rather than the USP - bouncing jellytits. The game just wouldn't work if the players were male, though - the whole friendship-building thing really *is* a new gaming dynamic in the West. It's a clever way of taking the mechanics of dating games and presenting them to a traditionally bemused audience.

By the way, Haus, have you played the XCOM take on X-Wing/Tie Fighter, XCOM: Interceptor? It's XCOM light, dropping the turn-based battles entirely and substituting 50's SF-themed flying sections for them, while keeping the base-building stuff. Much as I always enjoyed the turn-based stuff in the series, Interceptor's the only one I bothered sticking with until the end.

Of course, you could always just go and download Laser Squad Nemesis.

I loved the original UFO/XCOM: Enemy Unknown, because had this big fun strategic end of R&D and stuff, and that tactical end of slowly walking around UFOs shooting things. Also, the strategic end made sense and was managable.

Apocalypse should have been wonderful, but was nightmarishly complicated - all those bloody factions meant it took ages to work out what was going on, tech-trees were huge, geography was a pain (oh shit, there's a fire in a warehouse) and the tactical sections, though spiffy and bigger and offering more options and real-time shit were best played at a snail's pace and using half your APs all the time for covering fire. It just was too much. Nothing since has touched the original X-COM, for me; one of my Desert Island Games.
