I done it. I gone done bought an Xbox. Yes, it looks absolutely horrible. Yes, the design of the controller is awful. Every time I try to hit the Y button without actually looking for it - every fucking time - I get the white one instead. No, the games catalgoue doesn't have as many high points as that of the Gamecube, despite (or because of) the larger number of games. No, it's not going to replace Nintendo's machine in my affections, primarily because the GC line-up for the next few months in the UK is unbeatable (Metroid, Zelda, Resident Evil, Super Monkey Ball 2). And yes, my JSRF/Sega GT disc is faulty - very annoying, considering that JSRF was one of the games I wanted it for.
But... Halo. I'd previously had a couple of goes on this at a mate's house and came away unimpressed. That may have been down to the fact that I was playing it in co-op with a four year old and the controls were set to the defaults (unintuitive for a Goldeneye veteran). I was wrong. I am converted. Also got Splinter Cell, which bit of a duffer in a number of respects - the twitchy, back-to-front camera controls, mainly - but still addictive. It's very much a PC adventure game in that it's basically just a string of set-pieces, each of which is an individual puzzle, but the combination of elements from Metal Gear Solid and Thief 2 is one that works well.
Now I'm just waiting for my replacement JSRF and thinking of getting hold of Amped and Moto GP in the sales. Looking forward to the new Panzer Dragoon (more or less the deciding factor in my getting the machine). Doesn't someone here (Plums?) have a friend who worked on Moto GP? |
