Just scored a copy off The Gotham Times, which many people were avoiding like it was a Mormon/Jesuit/MindHead doubleheader Chick Tract, but both my friend and I were all over like rabid geeks.

Eh?

Eh?

Apparently in addition to the website there are print copies of The Gotham Times, which were mailed to those who participated in the clown makeup stunt from whysoserious.com a few weeks ago. I guess they were handing them out somewhere too?

They were passing them out in Glendale and in West Hollywood, last night. It's a silly thing to get excited over but, well, there you are: I was excited. The Glendale guy was quite motivated, treating it like it was a free sample of a real paper; WeHo's streetside distributor was less enthusiastic.

I keep forgetting you live in Los Angeles, DD. I did in fact know that there were hard-copies, but I hadn't put two and two together.

Larger, brighter, clearer image.

First reaction: GAHHHHH!!! THE EYES!!!

I wonder... there's an old Bob Kane Batman where he first fights Clayface in an old theater. There's a single frame of that comic, in which Clayface is leering out of the shadows at our hero and looks absolutely terrifying. He has similar eyes - white spots in pools of black.

Some day, I have to scan that image.

Anyway, it's a typical trick, but I wonder if they were thinking of that specific frame with this picture.

I always find this sort of reveal hugely underwhelming. The Joker's look simply won't mean anything to me until I'm seeing it in the context of the movie.

I know exactly what you mean Boboss, it's really not a patch on seeing the actual end product and in a way it doesn't really mean much of anything on it's own.

Although such a picture does give ample opportunity to appreciate other aspects that could easily pass you by in the film proper, and so I must say - he's really rocking an excellent sock and shoe combo there.

That's lovely. I even hope there's a shot in the film that serves to highlight it.

Found this in a recent interview:

So Heath, your playing the Joker in the new batman film, how are you going to play it?

Heath: Well I'm rocking an excellent sock and shoe combo there.

Honest I found that somewhere, I didnt just make it up. Dont laugh.

Looking good, but I'm with Boboss, I'm withholding judgment untill I see some action, need to see the guy moving to get any real feel for it. BUT..he is rocking an excellent shirt and tie combo there.

Putting together the look and the voice-over of the teaser trailer ("Starting tonight, people will die [breathing sounds] I'm a man of my word. [laughter]"), I'm pretty stoked about it. Will Jack be surpassed? Time will tell.

On a thread rot, "first look on Transformers 2"? I gotta go to the importer see if I find myself that magazine.

(yeah, but knowing Wizard, 'your first look at Transformers 2' will be a short blurb with one of the screenwriters of the sequel with about 4 short paragraphs of characters that they're thinking of including in the movie, and perhaps a very loose/general idea of a possible plot for the movie. So don't get your hopes up.)

The Wizard pic works a lot better for me getting the feel of the character, because it looks much more like an in-moment set photo, than the divorced, posed one Empire released. This is shaping up to be very exciting.

I read in the Empire article that the idea behind the makeup he wears is that it's only been applied once, and he's just left it to crack and rot on his face. After having gone out as The Joker for Halloween this year and then falling asleep pished without washing the crap off my face, this is a look I can heartily endorse. Feels mingin too.

I gotta say, I really like the route they took on the Joker. It makes a lot of sense to me given the character and is even more frightening.

latest scavenger hunt involved even more new websites and cake. unveiling a link so US residents can register to first watch the Imax preview and also this:

So I did the IMAX preview with some friends and it was, indeed, totally worth it. Goddammit that moved fast and hit all the marks. I have no idea what's going on with the Joker, who was both meta-hilarious and played very straight, nearly sedate, but with clear purpose even if that purpose is just fucking shit up. If he is a man who just wants to see the world burn, he's a man who doesnt' want to just see anything burn, but the whole world. If that makes any sense.

Wizard reports that a direct to dvd animated Batman anthology is in the work to coincide with Christopher Nolan's next Batman film. In addition of involvement from Bruce Timm, Batman: Gotham Knight will feature work from anime studios Madhouse (Ninja Scroll, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Paprika), Studio 4°C (TekkonKinkreet), and Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell). Director Satoshi Kon (Paprika) is likely to work on the project as well.

It might sound perverse in light of my recent track record on this forum... but the idea of an anime Batman is not something that I find hugely appealing in the climate of the forthcoming dark, dark, dark Dark Knight movie. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to Nolan's movie more than any other cinema blockbuster, but I'd much rather see Satoshi Kon or Yoji Enokido unleashed on a version of the character more in line with Mike Allred's utterly joyous homage to the Adam West-era Batman in his issue of Solo than what will probably be an animated spin on a grim and gritty Caped Crusader. I don't think meta-craziness is probably what they'll aim for in a standalone OVA anthology, and I cringe to think of most of the Animatrix shorts (apart from the Lain-inspired haunted house instalment). One wonders what these studios can teach us about Batman that we don't already know, and I'm not particularly keen to see this being more ammunition for those who think anime is more about style than substance.

Still, those are three strong studios. Shame Studio Gainax aren't in the mix, because in a perfect world all visual entertainment would be made by those fucking nutters.

As far as animated Batman, I hardly think you can get much better than this, specially this episode. In fact, I'm a huge fan of every single DC-based animated series from Bruce Timm ever since (much better than any DC comics in this past two decades, me thinks).

Anyway, just to conclude this "look at me" post, I just want to say

GAAAAHHHH! I WANN SEE IMAX JOKER! GAAAAHHHH!
