I just think you're running too far with the ball.

Wouldn't doubt it, much. I haven't even glanced at the trade in ages.

You know what I want to see with this Joker that was defitely in DKR? Those kid-bombs. Just to watch the audience reaction to a superserious crime/action superhero film when there's a flying Raggedy Andy-esque doll that breaks through a window and explodes. Extra points if, a moment later, we realize it wasn't flying, but just thrown through a window by the Joker, who was also provided voice-over. Puppetshow deathboom.

I think I've just got the Ichi vibe on the brain too hard. I want sadomasochist lovestory cheery horribleness, but I tend to want to cartoon things to some inevitable goofy climax.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. They were so horrid.

This looks mucho awesome. Looking forward to another high-quality film from Nolan & Co.

The kidbombs, god, yeah. There's something so very upsetting about the way they talk and appear possessed of, admittedly unpleasant, character. Are they alive, are they not?

mmm

I'm really quite unreasonably excited about Patrick Batman II, in all honesty. Ledger, ah, I wonder - I'd like to see a side or 3/4 profile, whether the thing has green hair or otherwise before getting stratospheric - Ledger, I can recall in Brokeback and Brothers Grimm, always quite secondary to my mind, and I think, in some almost fundamental way, the Joker is - or ought to be - about stealing scenes, the flick, the book, you know? Still, it is proper malevolent that, a good sign, yes.

I hate it when a villain "steals the show". It becomes... well, it becomes Batman with Nicholson. It loses focus completely so it can... urgh.

Ah man, this is cool. Go to ibelieveinharveydenttoo.com. It says the page is no longer there, but just click on the top of the page, hold it and scroll down.

You can also select all in your chosen fashion.

That and the playing cards on the store floor are just plain cute. The creepy thing being in Batworld, they would seem really cute, too, and then you'd find out the cards were coated in Joker venom and the computer screen had weird subliminal turn-you-nuts effects.

whether the thing has green hair

Rumoured to have patchily dyed green hair, Falke. Looking at that image I imagine that's on the money

I'm sorry, internet, can I leave my opinion here? Having just watched "...Begins", all I can say is that I'm happy I have Tim Burton's version to fall back to. And judging from this "extreme Joker" pic, it doesn't seem like there'll be any improvement...

It seems that this might well be filming in Farringdon at the moment. A friend of mine who works there heard the crew talking about Batman and they're working under the name "Cape Road Productions", about which Google reveals nothing except that it's a company registered at Warner Brothers HQ in Holborn ... and he's today spotted some, um, appropriately-dressed extras. He'd have taken pics but the security wasn't too friendly.

Has noone here seen Lords of Dogtown?

Skip Englom, California skate shop owner, founder of the legendary Zephyr team, stoner, drunkard and shaper.

I have faith in Heath.

Does anyone know if there is co-ordination between the film and the comics as both of them now have 'damaged mouth' Joker?

It would be nice if we actually got to see the Clown at Midnight somewhere outside of the one text issue of Batman wouldn't it?

I think it's highly likely, highly, highly, highly likely given some of the clues that are peppering the book that we'll be seeing the Joker again. Just in time for the film I imagine.

Remember "Population Explosion"

I thought that was one of his several henchmen or people he pulls a bank job with before he becomes the Joker. But I could be totally wrong and probably am. I thought I'd seen some bits online talking about him robbing a bank with other guys, all wearing spooky clown masks.

The end of the last film did mention Joker robbing banks- and predictably leaving everybody dead.
As for him stealing the show... kinda the point isn't it? At the end of the last film Detective Gordon tells Batman that when crimefighters start getting theatrical so do criminals- a concept that appeals to me somewhat. Batman and Joker in a kind of ratings war, looking to see who can grab the most column inches (make even one dick joke here and I swear I'm leaving this board for good.)

Harley Quinn is probably my fav of the Ladies. I will go have to check the wiki to see what her status in the cannon is though?

Also this doesn't look very DKR to me, seems very much younger?

I'm 33 and yes I have watched the cartoon and purchased the supermarket kiddies comics. Harley Quinn is still probably my fav of the Ladies.

It's not supposed to be DKR, XK.

I think it might be a little too early to introduce a character as inessential as Harley Quinn. Focus needs to be narrower, I reckon.

That's because it's not a film adaptation of DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, but rather from the immediate sequel to BATMAN BEGINS, to be called THE DARK KNIGHT full stop, and set (obviously) during the early part of the Batman's career.

Boboss: Thank you. "Inessential" is the perfect word.

Eloi Tsabaoth

Characters aren't being vetted entirely on how essential they are. Ra's Al Ghul isn't exactly a quintessential Batman character but fitted a particular role. So did Mr. Zsasz. I don't actually think that she should turn up. But if anyone sees Fairuza Balk in Chicago wearing punk-rock motley, let us know.

I understand it's not supposed to be DKR, but upthread there is some discussion of the Joker along DKR lines and I was curious why people were pulling those out. See the kid bomb refs etc.

As for HQ being inessential I'm not sure what criteria you are using to determine who should be included? Surely the discussion of what kind of Joker we are going to have contains room for looking at HQ?

Spaniel
18:57 / 29.05.07
Possibly, I suppose I would just be inclined to keep the focus narrow, and not muddy the waters with Joker stalker subplots, when what really needs to be built is the Joker's relationship with Batman. Of course, Nolan's take on Harley Quinn could be very different, and more acceptable (to me).

Because the Joker in DKR was creepy as fuck, and people are hoping for a similar portrayal.

Harley Quinn really only has context in the Bruce Timm universe. She's not a major player in the comics and as far as I know, there are no plans to introduce Miss Quinzel into the Nolan universe. It's going to be padded enough as it is with The Joker, Salvatore Maroni AND Harvey Dent for storyline.

I dunno he seemed much more limited than in other venues. Besides the 'Darling' line what did he have? His final stage exit? He seemed pretty underveloped/under used compared to other appereances.

Do people think we are going to see Nolan comment on the Joker's habit of making people uncomfortable via sexual behavior/remarks?

There were rumors about Sarah Michelle Gellar being in talks to play the Joker's girlfriend, which of course made everyone go 'Harley Quinn!!!!' but they sounded like just one of thousands of unsubstantiated rumors about a movie like this, and I haven't heard anything about them in months. She seems a bad choice to play a role like that anyway.

Well, Nolan and others have been namechecking DKR as a heavy influence on them, so I kinda just extrapolated from there. There's also been tossed about references to using The Killing Joke. Other than the 'one bad day' nugget, Moore's oneshot didn't have much to recommend it, in my unhumble assessment. Especially in Joker characterization.
