Stong Truth. I've not been feeling the love so much since the new titles hit, for some reason I can't quite put my finger on, but with this episode Bleach is up to being as good if not better than ever in my book. It's great to see how much Byakuya has grown since the Soul Society arc and it was lovely to see it presented so matter of factly. Given this and Ishida's enthusiastic use of wiggle room I wonder if one the themes of this arc might be getting the job done via loosening up a bit, rather than being spectacularly uptight.

Don't know if anyone has noticed this website, but it's got a really good Bleach archive, all episodes loaded up for streaming fun.

This is probably a holdover from my days as a Dragonball Z fan but I could really live the rest of my life without another "let's run for ages and never get anywhere!" series of episodes. See Goku travelling to King Kai's place; Goku travelling to Namek; the Strawberry gang travelling to Executioner's Point; etc

Anyway, great episode. Lovely to see Byakukya has actually developed a little as a character and reminding us that Ichigo is a walking spanner, insofar as he alters the machinery of everything.

Very interested to see them team up with a group of Hollows. You'd never think it could happen, what with the Shinigami essentially engineering a lifelong holocaust against them, but it feels right, especially in this weird arc of people going against orders/their own natures and prejudices.

It's funny how the filler material in Bleach, while significantly mistreating Renji as a character, somehow makes Rukia's reference to the two of them as Ichigo's nakama in 146 seem that much more justified. In the extended anime version of the story the two of them have been through that much more together.

And it seems as though Byakuya has now stopped trying to protect Rukia... he was previously the man who prevented her from becoming a seated officer for her own safety, now he's helping her pack to save Inoue. There's a lot of job vacancies going in Soul Society right now and I can see her getting some Lieutenant action in the shake-up... provided she isn't put straight back in prison after her return from Hueco Mundo. That's making the assumption that anyone's getting out of there alive... which I think is a fair assumption.

The integration of the filler material is continuing apace. I'm pretty sure that 146 was based on only an issue and a half of the manga, which is roughly half the rate of the Soul Society arc. It's having an inevitable effect on pacing and quality which is why we're feeling a sense of slowness to these latest episodes. But I'm hoping that the arrival of Rukia and Renji will shake this up, especially considering that in the canon material Ishida has had barely any direct dealings with the two of them. That might make for some interesting moments.

I've spent the evening trying to find decent Tite Kubo interviews and drawn a blank.

Having got this far into the series I think we can hazard a guess as to the identities of the two Arrancar who appear in silhouette at the start of episode eight when the Grand Fisher is sent to attack Ichigo when the family visit the mother's grave. There's one full face shot in partial darkness that looks a hell of a lot like Iceringer, the Arrancar that is killed by falling debris after his defeat at the hands of Ishida. The other one is more human in form and their silhouette seems similar to the Espada who comments that he's only just woken up when Aizen summons the ten of them to the meeting after Ichigo, Ishida and Chad's invasion.

One bit that's playing out better in the anime than it did in the manga is Ichigo's relationship with Nel. In the comic the Great Desert Brothers pretty much decide to give their enemies a lift on Bawabawa appros nothing. In the anime Ichigo gets to demonstrate what a decent chap he is around three times before she trusts him... although Bleach has pulled the trick of misdirection via idiot-humour many, many times now. I don't think we can necessarily take much in Hueco Mundo at face value.

The relevant sequence comes at the end of chapter 25 in the comic, and definitely features Iceringer. Interesting that in the anime they play it out as the Arrancar sending out Grand Fisher in episode eight, but in the manga it's them receiving his wounded body in chapter 25 and Arrancarising him there and then, a scene that didn't make it into the anime until episode 110.

So the early appearance of the Arrancar is certainly canon, in fact much more so in the manga than in the anime. The fight against Grand Fisher also plays out very differently, with no bounty hunter Shinigami sent to arrest Rukia and no appearance of Ichigo's Mum's spirit as an imprint in Grand Fisher's lure (a scene that never really worked for me in the anime). The best take on the material seems to be some kind of halfway stage between the two versions... the early Bleach chapters seem to be much more different in their adapted versions than the later ones.

And we're back to episodes made up entirely of filler. Telltale sign: Rukia's dumbass shikai activation on the back of Bawabawa throwing off her aim and her slipping up at the moment she encounters the Menos. Do we really need good characters to carry out ridiculous pratfalls in order for the narrative to get the right places?

What's interesting is Ashido, the rogue Shinigami... my first impulse was that he is Kaien and that this is what happens to Shinigami who get beaten/eaten by Hollows, but I strongly doubt it for a filler arc. My guess is he's testing Rukia in order to determine why someone of her power level has turned up seemingly alone in Hueco Mundo. Nice to see the world of the Hollow as it is familiar from the earlier episodes and the Hollow and Menos Grande are much creepier in their natural habitat, but I have the same question I had for Nausicaa... what's keeping all that sand up?

Much, much, much better. Ashido has joined Ichinose Maki as the joint best filler character, his back story makes him very likable, especially at the moment when Rukia's honesty reveals to him the futility of his mission. Some great writing for Rukia too. Is Ashido staying in Heuco Mundo to fight from principle, revenge, guilt, shame, self-hatred or all of the above? Cracking stuff, and I really hope he doesn't die. The thought of him choosing to stay even after this filler arc is done is a terrific notion, one lone Shinigami in the heart of Hell fighting an endless battle. If only the manner in which they arrived at this point in 147 was more skilfully handed.

Nel is fast becoming a favourite character too. Everything that voice actor says is funny.

Funny you should mention Ichinose, I was about to compare Ashido to him favourably in the filler character stakes, and the design is much better than I'd expected from filler material as well. Rukia is destined to spend her life being influenced by maverick guys with unruly haircuts, it seems.

Talking of which, last week's episode featured a very funny bit of inadvertantly well done characteristion, with Renji's absurd theory about Rukia being blown away 'because she's so small and light'. Another reminder of the extent to which he places his boss's sister on a very high pedestal.

Best. Shinigami. Cup. Golden. Ever.

And the best ending to a three episode filler arc that we could have hoped for. Some of the most kinetic action Bleach has seen in ages, a predictable as hell closing but almost exactly the one that I wanted. Apart from the clumsy and embarrassing 147 this little arc has been great.

And now we're back to the canon. As you were.

As a matter of interest, who is still watching?

Me, natch. Good to see that Ashido wasn't simply killed off and has been put on ice, hopefully to resurface again later on. As it seems that we have not only the Espada but some other as yet unidentified weirdoes to deal with (as glimpsed in the current ending sequence) I'm sure he'll be useful, even if he has to be sat down for a few hours with a flowchart and Rukia's sketchbook to be brought up to speed.

Best. Shinigami. Cup. Golden. Ever.

I'm pretty sure that the notion of a zanpakutou with a 36DD cup measurement had never occurred to me before, but now... aagh. Brain virus.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but the Region 2 first DVD has just come out. There seems to be some dialogue/confusion over exactly what's on the disc; Amazon says that it's "the first four episodes", but it's 272 minutes long - and when I did first watch Bleach, I was used to it being in 22-minute long segments. My theorem would be that they're counting 3/4 22-minuters as a single episode.

But who needs theorems?

For some reason, the ethical part of my brain went into overdrive when it came to downloading Bleach - I'm not a torrenter or a file sharer, not for particularly ethical reasons, just for a lack of a certain appeal. But with Bleach, I downloaded the first forty, watched the first twenty, then had some sort of unrealised ethical crisis about continuing to download them.

However, over the next two days I should receive volumes 7-21 of the manga through the post, because they're pretty cheap. So the hole in my soul caused by my ethical side will be allayed, at least.

(Plus, I get into deep arguments about intellectual property with a close friend re: the ethics of Bleach downloading, and my position is now slightly confused.)

Has anyone got any info over the quality of the subbing/dubbing on the 'official' release, though, before I would lay down £17.99 on it?

I have some thoughts on the dubbing... it's atrocious and makes my favourite ongoing/non-finite series on television practically unwatchable.

The voice acting in Bleach is peerless in places. Fumiko Orikasa (Rukia) acts her socks off in the Japanese original, repeatedly coming at the character from different directions and creating a multi-faceted person using only her voice. In the English language version she's replaced by a one-note monotonous wooden non-entity.

That's just one example, but steer clear. Please.

I'd be very interested to see the official sub though.

The only information I have is from the same 'ethical debate' friend mentioned above, who has serious issues with the official subtitling on the Region 1 / Region 0 release he bought. Nomenclature issues, general badness - so if these are the same, it's probably problematic.

Filler was...filling. There's always room for fight scenes involving taking down fields of Menos. It reminds me of the early days when the thought of just one attacking was a big deal, though I'm a little disappointed that they didn't remember Ichi's trick from way back then of absorbing the Cero.
Actually, that might be a handy power indicator. If Rukia-powered,Cero-boosted Ichigo back then could just barely defeat a Menos,we'd call that 0.9 MPR (Menos Per Rumble,a unit of kills-per-fight. 100 Hollows=1 Menos). Ishida hardly made a dent,so it'd be 0.2 MPR.
Vaizard-powered Ichigo's on a whole new level. His Shikai is ~25 MPR,comparing favourably with Renji's Bankai — 20-30 MPR — whilst New,Improved Ishida with Kung-fu Laser Chaingun is about 5-6 MPR.

Anyone thinking of taking up on Mayuri's offer should beware of one thing — he's not likely to tell you where he's going to put them O_O.

Thoughts totally devoid from current Bleach...

I find it interesting how easily most people accept Zaraki Kenpachi's verdit that Ichigo beat him when they fought. Kenpachi is the last man standing and he's on home turf. He can reasonably expect to be picked up and taken off to 4th Squad before seconds have passed, especially considering the bonkers and devoted Yachiru is waiting in the wings. He's effectively stopped Ichigo from proceding any further, has left him bleeding to death and unconscious and without any apparent back up. Ichigo could die there and then, Kenpachi certainly couldn't. ZK also knows Strawberry's objective, relayed faithfully by Ikkaku. Although Ichigo isn't dead he's certainly left in no shape to continue, and Kenpachi has no way of knowing about Yoruichi's sly wildcard role.

By any common definition Zaraki Kenpachi won the fight. If the criteria accords to tournament fighting he's the last man standing. If it's about stopping Ichigo (which we know it isn't because ZK fights for kicks) then to all intents and purposes Ichigo appears to have been neutralised. If it's about fun then Kenpachi has certainly had his fill. If it's about proving that fighting in partnership with your zanpakuto rather than trying to dominate it then Kenpachi was again the last man standing.

So what is Kenpachi's criteria for losing, and why should we accept it? I'm convinced that Ichigo found his Achilles Heel, in that part of ZK fears and distrusts himself (the zanpakuto having been explained to us as the source of power for a Shinigami, a part of themselves). Kenpachi must have known this deep down before the fight and so his bluster reeks of being a defensive position. Perhaps Ichigo 'beat' him the moment he made mention of it. Or perhaps it was the fact that Strawberry fought him to a standstill, that Kenpachi couldn't go on. Or could it be that at the moment that Ichigo won the psychological battle it became serious, and therefore ceased to be 'fun?' It certainly left him with a lot to think about.

He was rushed off to 4th Squad and there was no indication that he gave the order for Ichigo to be captured in what he must have believed to be a prone condition. He won by the criteria of any outside observer.

Ichigo, never one for self-analysis, has never made his thoughts known on the subject. I guess it's an experience he'd rather forget, the closest he's come to sheer uncontrolled terror he's experienced outside of his struggle with his inner Hollow. That construct-Kenpachi later emerges in his battle with that Hollow says a lot (ZK, Byakuya and Kariya could all be the only non-Hollow people who he has made the conscious decision to kill, something he cannot easily live with. Let's not forget, he purifies Hollow when he 'kills' them).

It's a deeply ambiguous fight and one that says a lot about both participants. But part of me thinks that Kenpachi's reputation for being unbeatable is intact. He couldn't have conceded such a highly questionable 'defeat' had he not been the last man standing.

So true. I was rewatching #146 a few days ago and the furious speech Rukia delivers to Ichigo after he expresses his doubts that she and Renji would come after him gave me chills. You can hear all the pride, anger, camaraderie and deep love Rukia feels for the Strawberry spilling out in those few moments, and it's not even anything we haven't seen between the two of them many times before in the show. And then five minutes later you get the scene with Rukia blushingly admitting who supplied her desert cloak and my sides hurt again.

Nel is fast becoming a favourite character too. Everything that voice actor says is funny.

When I said upthread that Grimmjow was the star of the current arc I hadn't reckoned on Nel - her terrifying ickle gurl (with highly inappropriate vocabulary) persona is Yachiru to the power of ten and Tomoko Kaneda has an incredible delivery. The fact that she's also adorable prodigy Chiyo-chan in Azumanga Daioh makes the character even better.

So it's a head to head battle of wits between Orihime and Aizen. On the face of things Inoue is fucked, really. Shei's surrounded by Espada led by the man who made Momo Hinamori go insane and turned Soul Society upside down, he has the power of hypnosis/illusions and is one of this shows two master manipulators. But something makes me doubt that things will turn out in that straighforward a manner. Breaking Orihime seems too obvious for Kubo.

Nice meta-commentary on the nature of the recent filler: "We've been falling down holes ever since we came to Hueco Mundo."

Shiny: Well Over Thirty
15:42 / 29.11.07
Yeah, I'm still sticking to my theory that bringing Orihime in was Aizen's first, and perhaps only significient strategic mistake. This is based largely on the impression that everything else in his plan seems to have been mapped out for years, in elaborate detail, but Orihime on the other hand is someone he only found out about a few weeks ago, and immediately decided he had a use for. In doing so he would seem to have introduced an element of randomness into his plans that just wasn't there before. There's also the probability that Inoue might be the only person in the whole universe that can reverse the effects of Aizen's brainwashing powers to consider.

Seth
18:20 / 29.11.07
If you consider the implications of phenomenon rejection then Inoue Orihime is ludicrously powerful. If she can reject something out of existence altogether (something she's never tried, she's only used her power for healing so far) then that makes her deadly. If she can reject the destruction of something (for example, Grimmjow's arm) then could she even reject death itself?

It's fascinating subject matter but potentially very difficult to write well. It could be used as the ultimate deus ex machina, with Orihime as the series' reset button. Kubo seems to be tackling these difficulties by setting up psychological barriers to certain applications of the power. Hachi has already remarked that Orihime should have been able to use it to reconstitute Tsubaki after Yami seemingly destroyed him, although I may be misinterpreting that as I seem to recall Hachi saying that Inoue can remake any of the Shun Shun Rikka as they are all a part of her. Regardless of this we know that Orihime is almost certainly not current capable of intentionally killing someone, even if they might be an enemy.

If the rejection of the Hogyoku is her intention then it's certainly a risky strategy. Aizen has temporarily bonded to it and seems to be highly aware of fluctuations in its potency. The instant he notices what she's doing she's in a lot of trouble. The use of her powers is also conspicuous, everything gets surrounded by that pesky amber field… although there might be certain applications for misdirection. As I recall she rejects phenomena from either side of the field, inside for healing, outside for defence, and both sides for attack. If a situation were to arise in which there was room for ambiguity over which side of the field she was using then could there be room for shenanigans of the Superman II variety?

I think Orihime's real asset in this situation is her personality. She's often awkward, clumsy, scatty… and with her gift for a flaky kind of free association is the Osaka of the group. No surprised that they're voiced by the same actors (Bleach needs to get her together with Nel so that we can have a proper Azumanga Daioh reunion). I'm in agreement with Shinji Things that she is potentially a random element that Aizen doesn't know how to deal with, and part of me would dearly love a scene in which she is allowed free expression in all her madcap glory in the heart of Las Noches.

Shiny: Well Over Thirty
18:31 / 29.11.07
Hmmmm, yeah - I'm figuring the rejecting the Hogyoku is definitely not going to work at least not to the benefit of the good guys. It seemed to me like Aizen deliberately planted that idea Orihime's head to me. I've no idea why he might want to to have that idea, but I can't beleive that his very pointed revelation of the the location of the Hogyoku and reminding Orihime of what she could do right at the same time was meant to have any other effect than the one it did have. So this round to Aizen in my opinion.

Also the more I think about it the more I'm loving the idea of a fairly extended conflict between Orihime and Aizen. In a lot of ways she's far more suited to be Aizen's archnemesis than Ichigo. The two are just so opposite. Aizen's order, deceit, planning and utter coldness, and Orihime is chaos, honesty, whimsy and compassion.

Seth
18:49 / 29.11.07
Agreed, it's a great match... especially considering that the obvious parallel for the less astute fan to draw is to compare this situation to what Aizen did to Momo Hinamori. I don't think things are likely to go in that direction here, but it would be wonderful payback of a sort if Orihime put one over on him.

A bit too diluted with filler these days for my tastes. We've just got past a three episode filler arc, and I think some of the canon episodes before that were a bit watered down with filler material. Still when it's stickly fairly closesly to canon like the last episode did, it's every bit as fantastic as it ever was. I should add though that there was one fantastic episode recently (141 as I recall) in which the filler worked perfectly and actually functioned purely to add depth and enhance the story. I'm hoping to see more of that in the future. If they need to bulk Bleach up that's exactly how they should do it.

Every episode since the team entered Hueco Mundo has had at least some filler, it's been a ratio of two-thirds canon to a third padding. For the most part it's been better than previous inserts because it's a lot more self-aware than it has been previously. It takes the piss out of itself as filler and has some fun character bickering.

I'm figuring that this may be coming to an end now. The easiest way to fill space is with dialogue, but now each character is going it alone. We'll see, I guess.

The "Let's split up each take a different passageway!" development is pretty stupid strategically but useful dramatically, to let each individual have a turn in the spotlight - the Ichigo & Nel double act still has plenty of mileage in it, and it's going to be good to see how Rukia, Renji, Ishida and especially Chad each fare on their own.

As of this week, Aizen is my all-time favourite anime supervillain - the shot with him giving the evil eye to the Arrancar floozies was both perfectly composed and a real demonstration of his power. The sequence with Ulquiorra explaining the kidnapping gambit to that sleaze Nnoitra cleared up some doubts I had, since it seemed an unusual letting slip of the reins for Aizen, but once again we had evidence of what a master of psychological manipulation he is. And counter to that, I enjoyed Ulquiorra's sneaking admiration for Inoue - a huge signpost for future developments, but I'm glad to see that dissent to Aizen's rule isn't necessarily confined to filler characters and bolshy Grimmjow.

I think her rejection ability acts more like time-reversal. If she intends to take it right back to the time of creation, all he has to do is pretend not to notice, wait until she reaches the 'start'...and kill/interrupt her. Bam,brand new Hogyokou.
