buttergun speaks equally strong truth.

What does it say about us that we automatically assumed ninja garb?

We're no better than the writers.

This episode struck me as being the most visually sophisticated and stylish so far -- esp as with the heroin/painting scene you guys mentioned. I think I saw the name Ernest Dickerson as the Director -- he started out as the cinematographer on Spike Lee films, which always looked cool, and later went into directing. Same guy?

Nah - I think you're reading too much into that one. He's a nerd! He's one of us! He gets super powers, he gets a bit serious. But realistically, why on earth wouldn't he dress like a Ninja. I would!

One thing I forgot to mention the other week -- earlier on this thread some of you were complaining that the show was angling a bit TOO much for the nerd vote. The "hey, we're nerds too!" deal.

Remember the scene, I think it was episode before last, in Tokyo where Hiro stopped the truck from hitting the little girl? Did anyone catch that the truck was transporting Mazinga (aka Mazinger) toys? That one kind of did it for me...a bit too much, but still kind of funny, and maybe also kind of cool.

Like Hiro becoming a ninja in the future, I guess.

Ernest Dickerson is indeed the director you are thinking of.

Watching that back I don't think that he is actually dressed like a ninja, unless they wear black zip up jackets with high collars...but he does have a sword on his back.

This is getting better and better...with GlassesGuy collecting all the heroes like Pokemon, and Claire using her powers to apparently kill, and FutureHiro (I couldn't help wondering if he's from within this series or perhaps further forward than that). Agree also that the actors are starting to look more comfortable in their roles...it's easy to forget how ropey the early episodes of Angel or Buffy were too, so have high hopes for this now.

Yeah, I watched all of Buffy after it aired, and I would not have made it through season one if it didn't have such a great reputation. It's odd, and exciting to watch this show develop, with no idea of whether the potential will pay off, or if it will eventually crash and burn. I'd like to think TV's improved enough we'll not have an X-Files style meltdown, but it's impossible to tell, and a bit more fun that way, no preconceptions, just the work itself.

Yeah, his english was so perfect that I at first figured he must be from years into the future, but then I realized that a guy who can stop time can master just about any language or skill instantly.

Dunno if I agree with that. I'd like to think that Hiro is from pretty far in the future.

Without a teacher/trainer/critic/Flyboy?

I also thought Claire's autopsy looked kind of kooky. Obviously, it's all done with rubber, but she did seem entirely flat-chested when she was sticking herself back together.

The shot does move up from her waist (also missing a navel, I think) all the way to her face. However, you can see that the light is only partial, and that her hands, as she fumbles the skin into place, are arguably covering her breasts... that's her thumbs at the bottom of the frame in the last image, so they are at chest-level. Still looks oddly fake.

Even though it's only sfx, I feel a little bit of a weirdo for studying this sequence, so if anyone's disturbed or offended by the images, please let me know and they can be taken off the thread.

Just a normal zip-up jacket, I think.

And it only looks like a samurai sword.

Off to Spoilerville!!

(You guys would be proud. The other forums for this show are really really sad.)

Without a teacher/trainer/critic/Flyboy?

There's no reason he couldn't take a teacher, trainer, or critic with him into the time stop. (He's already taken in his friend with him when he stopped time around them.)

Of course with languages, you could learn quite a bit just with books and training tapes.

I like the possible idea that FutureHiro--despite his ability to stop time and teleport--knows that some things are inevitable and can only warn, not prevent.

It really is a sword. This scientific evidence proves it.

I brought my A-game Photoshop to this challenge! Look out for my forthcoming fan-film, Knight of the Hiro, which reconceives Hiro's sword as a glowing blue LIGHTSABER. Please critique my "chop" and ask if you want to know any of my techniques with the "paintbrush", "colors" etc.

Does Claire's MySpace Page count as a spoiler?

Just found it on wikipedia.

Watched the episode "Collision" on the website. May be hooked. Dangerous.

What with me being at work and all.

Although I *was* assigned to research the damn show yesterday for a story....

Well I'm glad that's all cleared up then. Thanks Miss Wonderstarr and your excellent Photoshopfu!

So one thing that was puzzling me last night after watching this is Peter's quick jump from, in Ep 3 still trying to make himself fly, to in the last episode realising that his abiilites are to 'synch' with those others' powers around him, knowing that he drew the future etc. He just figured that out by himself right? Or did I miss a crucial bit of plot somewhere?

You didn't miss a crucial bit of plot; the Continuity Angel is still adjusting to its work on this show.

Hiro's blog says:

Supposedly, this is the road to Las Vegas, but it's just sand everywhere. It feels like we're about to be attacked by Jawas. Ooh. We're just like the droids. Dibs on R2D2! I'm on a mission with my cyborg translator, アンドウロイド to deliver a message to Mister Isaku. "Isaku-san, you're my only hope." o(^^o)(o^^)o No, wait. I can't be R2D2. I'm Luke, master Jedi! Must. Find. Lightsaber.

Oops, good game phone bill. (T.T) Vegas, here we come. Red five, I'm going in!

"Gritty" "real" superheroes. New York destroyed by apocalyptic event.

How soon before Alan Moore makes snide comment?

I am currently disturbed by the trend to give fictional TV characters their own Myspace pages.

What about corporations? Disinfo's got one too.

This show's nutty, by the way. I especially like the hot-Dr. Jekyll and Mommy Hyde character. Ali Larter's a babe.

Myspace: it grows scary.

I'm slowly coming around to Alter Ego Mom's storyline.

Maybe there will come a time when half the websites on the internet are for fictional companies and characters in TV series.

Yes, thank you Bear. That image had my wife and I giggling.

Future Hiro was sporting a pretty healthy ponytail, too, wasn't he? One that I'd say would take at least a year to grow from the hairlength he's sporting in Vegas.

And when did he take his friend into the time stop with him, gridley? I don't recall that.

Peter's "maybe I only have powers when I'm around other people with powers" seemed rather sudden to me, too, but my wife said that maybe his "dream" of jumping off the roof and flying with Nathan was him manifesting Isaac power. Does that work? I wish I hadn't recorded over the first two shows...I keep wanting to flip through the previous "issues."

And speaking of Nathan, that scene in the preview for next week's episode, when he's standing between Creepy Glasses Guy and Bald Telepath Guy in what looks like some remote desert compound, and just launches himself skyward...Wow.

This show has been such a pleasant surprise to me.

Does Claire hurt when she's injured? She doesn't seem in pain, just mild shock, when she realises her chest is cut open. I'm just wondering whether crashing the car with Brody (?) in it cost her anything, involved any sacrifice ~ whether she had to feel the physical impact and experience the pain of dying. Her ability is rapid-healing, right, not total invulnerability?

TALK ABOUT CONVERGENCE, look at this "trans-media storytelling" site that encourages my participatory immersion in the diegesis!

I've just been talking to Claire on MSN so I should be able to answer the question about her healing abilities/susceptibility to pain very soon. Meanwhile I'm on the Union Wells High intranet looking up her GPA and academic record. Within a week or so I expect to become a character within "Heroes" with my own fictional internet community. You'll probably be able to call a number from a Tango commercial and hear my recorded message pointing you to clues in the source code of my favorite discussion forum.

I am exaggerating a little, but it's true that Claire Bennet apparently watches "Veronica Mars, Lost, American Idol, The Sheild". How weird is that, honestly? Claire supposedly follows the adventures of Jack and Sawyer, maybe checking up on Lostpedia and debating screencaps on a site like TWoP? The crossover between real and fiction is already starting to blow my puny mind.

A rather unexamined little thought, but is it possible that Nathan mimics other peoples' powers - sort of like Rogue but without the draining thing? That he can fly because his brother can fly?

Keith, like a scientist
12:52 / 20.10.06
do you mean Peter? Because that's exactly how he described his power this past episode... Nathan seems to be the flight-as-power brother.

Psi-L is working in hell
13:08 / 20.10.06
Yes, I think that is exactly what Peter's power is...kind of like the one Marvel's 'Synch' character had?
