I think it's everyone's best interest to stick around for a few more episodes. This is a sprawling storyline we've got here, and unlike Lost, it takes place all over the country, not just an island.

I think the big payoff will be when all the characters get together.

To be fair to the writers, I watched the end of 2 again, and I think Hiro goes to the comic dude's studio space. Either that, or his living quarters are super-industrial (we never see them in regular light, or in wide shots, so I think the space Hiro gets arrested in is a studio, not the visionary's home address).

Notice how they're hitting all the geek markers? Comic books, the nerdy A/V club kid who ever so improbably gets to hang out with the cheerleader, the Star Trek geek who gets the most arguably science-fictiony power of all? The more I think about it the more I feel a bit condescended to as a self-admitted "comic geek." Like they're trying too hard to push the "we are you!" buttons.

Not to say I'm not enjoying it, though. I like the sprawl and the wooly jumping-around. I hope they knock off the "every character gets thirty seconds" jumping around to try to give every single person their own cliffhanger at the end of every episode. It'll get tired.

I think they should have introduced the telepathic cop in the first episode--which I also think should have been at least an hour and a half long, if not two.

I'm with Matt on this "let's meet another one" every episode.

the nerdy A/V club kid who ever so improbably gets to hang out with the cheerleader

Actually, it's been covered in episode one, where the cheerleader tells him she'll talk to him in front of other people in school the next day. That, apparently, was the payment for the service he provided for her (taping her self-destructuve shenanigans).

The show has interesting enough characters, the acting is good, and the script, well, give them some time to introduce all the characters. From then on, it'll become less frantic and jumpy, I'm sure.

Just finished watching episode three. It's building very slowly, but I like this one better than the last one, even if the dialouge is pretty clucky at times. And just makes me jump for joy that finally there is a show about superheroes that isn't Mutant X on fox. I hate that show. And the end was just freaky-outy enough to ensure that I tune in next week. It is pretty dissapointing that they have to keep jumping around from character to character, but the adverts point to the lot of them joining up soon, so probably that won't be as big a problem in upcoming eps.

Okay, I've seen 3 episodes now and the show is alright. It has some really cool characters and ideas some some not so much. My favorite character is Hiro (who everyone is comparing to nightcrawler because all they know about superheroes is from movies, but he's more like Dr. Manhattan if you ask me) and cop guy from Alias. There's also a story line about a dick politician who can fly (Superman) and his brother who can only fly when he's around him (I'm thinking Mimic or Synch) which is pretty cool, but could be way better in better hands. The indestructible cheerleader has also been done better with Buffy. Every other story line is killed by bad acting.

I really wish they could get some of the Angel writers on here who can do awesome things with this stuff... we need to get Jeffery Bell and David Fury on here... maybe even Mark Waid.

I am really irritated with Alter Ego Mom's storyline. Enough where I yelled, "Oh, this is crap!" So the kid doesn't question where Mom got the vintage AND proceeds to sleep through the entire night as she buries bodies?????? I was his age once and you have to get up to pee or want some water. Grrrr.

Hiro is rapidly becoming a favourite, I like the psychic cop--though I feel bad for him, and selling your brother out and making him suicidal is the dickiest thing to do.

I still like it but it needs to tie these threads together so we get a more cohesive storyline.

All it would take is one moment for the Flying Republican to break down in front of a bathroom mirror or some sort of reaction to FINDING OUT YOU CAN FLY other than his standard, "I have a political career to worry about." C'mon, some kind of reaction to LEARNING YOU CAN FLY would be nice.

And wouldn't The Smartest Kid Alive figure out that, according to the rate at which Phoenix Mom was driving and the time he slept through trunks slamming and Phoenix mom swearing, they are nowhere where they should've been?

Don't get me wrong. Love the show. Love Wolverine Cheerleader and Japanese Nightcrawler. In fact, love it all except that which is above. Oh well, hopefully Nurse Rogue can lead them into a cohesive unit of pure hilarity and action.

I'm not totally solid on what I think of the show after three episodes, but I will say that the end of that last episode was enough to get my eyebrows raised and sufficiently weird to keep me engaged for a little longer at least. Creepy and not-turnable-back-from I'd imagine.

Reading some online commentary on the show, it seems that everyone is liking the same characters, Hiro, the Cheerleader and Greg Grunberg are getting a lot of love, while Niki, the stripper mom, is getting a lot of criticism. So, if anyone's likely to meet an early death, it would be her. But, it's probably not until episode six or so that we'll see the impact of fan reaction on the show.

And here's an interesting interview with the creator of the show. Definitely worth a look.

After seeing the third epsiode, I'm pretty much d'accord with all of the things said above, except for the bit about the Republican and his flying antics. From what was shown, it's not entirely clear, whether he knew about his ability before his kid-brother decided to jump off a building. So, maybe he's come to terms with his ability much earlier, and is now trying to leverage it to aid his campaign. By the way, I think there'll still be a few things to come about the alleged disorder their father was suffering from.

Actually, from what I can remember of the pilot episode, it was heavily hinted that Super Republican has known he can fly for a long time.

This show certainly displays some lapses of good sense*, but the flying issue isn't amongst them, IIRC.

*But, you know, do any of us really care? These shows always play a little fast and loose with day to day reality, and unless it it really kicks me in the face I'm inclined not to care. It's bad dialogue, bad pacing, boring characters, lack of plot cohesion and a paucity of good ideas that bother me

The single mum is getting ragged on? Why the fuck doesn't that surprise me?

I think you were wise to reject "Slut Mom", Kali, not just because it, er, doesn't fit, but because Slut Mom would be a bloody shitty, misogynistic thing to call anyone.

Jesus Christ

I don't care that she's a single mom; I just think her arc is the least cohesive. It's a damn shame.

What hints did I miss that Republican Brother has known how to fly for a long time?

Spaniel
13:33 / 11.10.06
Sadly, I can't remember.

I'll see if I can download the episode again.

Oh, and least cohesive in what way?

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
14:18 / 11.10.06
It's all messy and confusing. Ali Larter's arc has more holes in it than everyone else's.

Or maybe it's just me.

Spaniel
14:44 / 11.10.06
How so?

To my mind it's simply the arc with the most overt set of questions about the characters, and with the most unconventional structure due to the time loss factor, which in turn creates another set of questions. This is an arc that is deliberately chock full of holes.
The other stuff - the car, the kid sleeping, etc... - is just yer standard plot gloss.

On the subject of the plot, I'm surprised that no-one's mentioned the possibility that the Ali Larter character killed her bloke's gang. It's a big dangly question at this point, I reckon. And what about that weird top-of-the-stairs POV shot in Gran's house? Could her hubby be hiding-out there?

Personally (and rather obviously) I think we're dealing with an Ultimate Hulk/Dark Pheonix/Mr Hyde here. Someone who's ID manifests as a superpowerful alterego, and, with that in mind, I have a feeling Single Mum may turn out to be one of the show's most interesting characters (at least, if the writers are worth their salt she will).

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
14:51 / 11.10.06
I sort of assumed she killed the hubby's gang.

And according to the Wikipedia "Heroes" article, her husband is one of the chosen as well. Apparently his power is "phasing." Not quite sure what means.

Um, if that was a spoiler, I didn't mean to be. It took me trying to remember her hubby's name to go: "Who the--? Oh, yeah."

15:04 / 11.10.06
Ok so I enjoyed the third episode a lot more, better pacing, nice effects when Hiro stops time, and the introduction of Sylar and the mysterious guy in the bar wearing the symbol of the "x-gene" mutation around his next have done enough to pique my interest further. Great ending too.

Incidentally, for those that care, has anyone else noticed that NBC are putting out an online webcomic as a supplement to each week's show, with events that happen off screen, and apparently more than a few clues as to what is going on.

Man, this makes watching a TV show so much work....

Spaniel
15:20 / 11.10.06
Kali, I don't know whether that's been made apparent by any trailers (and if so that complicates matters - we had a big debate about that subject in the Lost thread), but if not I'd say yeah, that's a spoiler.

I'm not sure that this thread has a no spoiler policy, however, but if it doesn't and we can't agree to have one I'm afraid I'm gonna have to bow out.

[geek attack]Phasing, in the X-Men at least, is the ability to move through solid objects by vibrating the molecules that make up your body out of phase with the molecules of any given object.[/end geek attack]

No, I'm good with a no spoilers policy around here.

I apologise for the thing posted about Alter Ego Mom's hubby. Again, I forgot his name. But Wikipedia can be wrong. (Rarely.)

So THAT'S what phasing is.

Geek.

Anyone else got an opinion on spoilers?

For the record the Lost thing revolved around the trailers' propensity to show far too much detail - occasionally even major plot points were spoiled. This situation was complicated by the fact that the trailers were put together by the network and not the show's creators, something which the creators seemed to be pretty fed up about as they objected to their story being so thoroughly spoiled on a weekly basis.

In the end it was agreed (by most) that the plot details in question, while in the public domain, were controversial at best and should be flagged with a spoiler warning.

Psi-L is working in hell
15:53 / 11.10.06
As I'm downloading this and the files tend not to have the trailers for the next week's episode included, I would quite like this thread to stay free of preview spoliers or failing that at least flagged up very obviously as such...especially if what the network trailers show could be spoilerific in the extreme.

So the rules then basically would be that we can talk about plot points after they've aired, and only with a spoiler warning if they haven't?

I would also like the thread to be completely spoiler-free.

I keep forgetting lots of people don't care for spoilers. Usually when I like something or I'm interested in something, I find every source of information I can, regardless. I guess I'm the only one like that.

But: got it. No spoilers.

Anymore opinions?

I'm agaiinst spoilers for anything that hasn't aired. Speculation is fine, but if you've read definitive stuff, give the warning.

I also enjoy the alter-ego mom storyline. Like it a lot more than the high-school cheerleader stuff, that's for sure.

Has anyone else caught that the Wendy Melvolin and Lisa Coleman who contribute the soundtrack are the "Wendy and Lisa" of Prince's Revolution? Last I heard from them was when Wendy's brother, who'd been playing keyboards with the Smashing Pumpkins, OD'd 10 years or so ago.

Must be me that's having problems with it then.

The cheerleader storyline is interesting because her dad is a baddie.

I like the cheerleader storyline, it's dull, foolish old Mohinder that bores me. His arc is just so flat.

17:15 / 12.10.06
If this looks like it's a goer as a series, then there's no reason that we couldn't have a parallel speculation and spoilers thread.

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
17:31 / 12.10.06
Jury's still out on that, Tom. I'll keep watching but I can't vouch for anyone else.

Jack Fear
17:59 / 12.10.06
Oh, it's a goer. The trade papers are reporting that NBC has ordered a full season's worth of episodes, and the audience has been growing. The show looks like at least a modest hit, and it's in no danger of cancellation.
