That's the most recent slew of apps sent off and a checker against every name in the DB. So when you're ready to forward more mail, Smoothly, I think we're ready!

Great. Thanks, V. (Although I notice that only a few have had their final status set to sent).

Will forward another batch now.

And can I beg a few more checkers to pitch in. At the moment it just seems to be me, Vincennes and Shrug. We have about 45 app emails in the queue.

And worse:
I'm lazy, extravagantly unreliable and terribly frivolous. It's doomed if other people don't help. Doomed!

(Okay, fine, I'll do some right now).

BAH and FEH, some of those definitely were set to sent by me so it must be the stupid database playing up. Grrr. I'll sort that out now.

We kinda need iconoplast to add the new apps to the database. I've not seen him around, so if it still needs doing when I get in tomorrow night, I'll try it myself.

Just a question - I'm new(ish) but I'd like to help. Is there any way in which I can do this?

If so, please let me know.

There are 12 names in the database waiting for checkers.

I'm confident that you will yell if I am wrongly preempting the established process, but I had a few spare minutes which I chose to spent volunteering my help to reduce the application queue.

I have forwarded each from the barbelith.apply account, then when it arrived in my private inbox (distributed by the barbelith-apps list), added each name and email address with the date in YYYY-MM-DD form to the database.

Thanks am464.
I'm sorry, I'm a bit of a Barbelith part-timer at the moment, and the apps process has fallen by the wayside for me somewhat. But it looks like I'm not the only one. I notice there is still a batch of passed applications waiting to be passed to Tom. Is Vincennes not around much either at the moment?

Do we need to talk about this again? How do people feel about the project/process? Has the motivation to get new people in evaporated?

Yeah... just got word from someone I passed along that they haven't received any word. If there's nothing done about this by the end of day today (that's in like 10hrs for me), I'll go through those that are passed and send them to Tom.

Can we have a roll call of the registered checkers, with an idea whether they are in a position to do some checking in the near future? Then we can decide what we need to do; whether it's a bit of chivvying, a pledge bank, or a recruitment drive that's called for.

I'm here, and I'll do some checking if you will.

I'm always pretty comfy with checking any that come through my inbox. It's the one thing I can almost always help with without worrying about taking on more responsibility than I can handle.

So... beyond sending a batch to Tom this go around, I'll gladly continue with the regular scheduled program.

As those of you who are on the barbelith-apps group email already know, I sent through those people who recently passed. Tom got a PM a few minutes ago to this effect. Cheers.

I'll check a batch once new ones are added to the database. I could then send off some a few days later to Tom this time around too.

I'll do some more at some point, sometime, when a little less busy in the new week, perhaps.

I've taken a look at the Yahoo group tonight. At the moment there are 9 unchecked applications on the database that are dated the 2nd and 4th of April. That's over 4 weeks ago. There are 106 emails in the gmail account.

I will check the 9 people.

I've checked 8 and specifically asked someone if they can do the last one, which frankly provided a website that left me so flummoxed that I just left it.

Damnation. Third in a row.

Is there is a specific reason why email #816 was never put on the database?

I've stuck the person on and emailed them.

What's the status on web-blogs i.e. what is regarded as established? More than a year? Continued postings for over 3 months?
I know it gives the answer somewhere in this thread but frankly it'd be alot easier if someone just reminded me. Ta.

Tryphena Absent
12:19 / 12.05.06
As far as I know there isn't one. It's more important to look at what people have written- if it's utter shit for a year than it's worthless in comparison to thoughtful, incisive posts for three months.

If you're not checking applications and don't want to do it then please wipe your name off the Yahoo group so that I know how many people we need to recruit

We have an applicant in the database at the moment who I can't make my mind up about. I've run it by some other people and they also feel a bit hazy. I've put a message on the Yahoo Group with the subject Please Read and I'd like you to take a look at it and decide what you think. The best way to do this seems to be to distribute responsibility as widely as possible and just get everyone's views before we collectively make a decision.

As a new and eager checker I've got a few questions. I'll probably have more later but for now if someone could answer these, I'd be very grateful.

1 : How long (approx) should I wait for a reply before sending another e-mail or giving up?
2 : Do we have a preferred set of questions to ask applicants? I've worked out to ask about blogs, live journal and proving e-mails etc but wandered if we have a standard I should follow.
3 : Do e-mails that go to the group account automatically go to all the checkers' personal e-mails or are the ones in my account specifically there for me to do?
4 : Can someone give some hints on what sort of behaviour to look for in potential trolls. Is there anything I should be looking for specifically outside of free e-mail addys and/or no web presence?
5 : Could someone pm me a list of known trolls or point me to a list just so I don't do anything really stoopid.

Big sorry if I'm asking questions answered on an faq somewhere I've missed. Just point me at that if I have.

Thanks.

I just got "verified" after (I figure) a couple of months, and to be honest I didn't mind the wait. In an odd sort of way, it adds weight to the eventual acceptance: the mind fills the gap with visions of gruelling arguments among the Barbelith Elite:

"We can't possibly let him in! He's a pretentious semi-literate hack!"
"Yes, but so dashedly good-looking! How can we not?"

It generates the idea (illusion?) that the application has been seriously considered, not auto-generated like a membership at the ILoveCuteKitties.com Forums. So the wait creates anticipation, and a bit of nervousness, and when the tap on the shoulder finally comes, one is actually psyched about becoming a productive member of the 'lith community.

I was, at least.

Just as a point of clarification -- a "member in good standing" or whatever can still circumvent the selection criteria (non-web-based email, other online proof of identity) by vouching for IRL friends and such?

I'm asking because of these contributions-by-proxy over here, which seem exactly like what the Temple needs more of, but are being made by a person who only has a web-only email via someone who I think is a new member. In my opinion, this Halo person is self-evidently not a troll, and would be of value based on what's already been posted.

What do the rest of you think?

I doubt anyone people would even begin to consider me a member in good standing, but I can definitely vouch for Halo who is just as smart and talented as I'm not.

Not being able to respnd to things which excite her, particularly in the temple, which was the first bit of the lith I showed her, is really frustrating. Today was just the first time she really couldn't contain herself.

She really has a lot to offer.

I believe that members can vouch for new people they know IRL, perhaps if you email the Barbelith gmail with Halo's details and say that you vouch for her, maybe Tom can add her?

1 : How long (approx) should I wait for a reply before sending another e-mail or giving up?

I send one and wait for a few months. If I can find the impetus I send another.

2 : Do we have a preferred set of questions to ask applicants? I've worked out to ask about blogs, live journal and proving e-mails etc but wandered if we have a standard I should follow.

Nothing except polite and friendly. I usually ask people if there's anywhere they really want to post, just to get a sense of their enthusiasm really!
3 : Do e-mails that go to the group account automatically go to all the checkers' personal e-mails or are the ones in my account specifically there for me to do?

They go to everyone who has specified that they want individual emails or a digest when they join. You can change your preference if you only want to look at them on the group.

4 : Can someone give some hints on what sort of behaviour to look for in potential trolls. Is there anything I should be looking for specifically outside of free e-mail addys and/or no web presence?

General interest and instinct I suppose. If someone is making statements that you think would be frowned upon then some advice in that direction might be a good idea. If a person is being overtly misogynistic or racist then ask for a second check.

5 : Could someone pm me a list of known trolls or point me to a list just so I don't do anything really stoopid.

I'll flag it up if I think someone we have banned is on the account. Again if you have doubts ask for another check or PM me and I'll take a look at it.

Thanks, that's mostly what I'd assumed and pretty much what I'd be working to but it's nice to have it confirmed.

This leads me to point out to prosepctive applicants that simply being really nice to us helps. A lot.
It is a bit odd how quickly gut feelings can be confirmed, but it's important always to be civil even if the applicant looks as zhe might be a total arse. That way you can be content to know you tried your best. Learning how to use whois is also a useful thing to do.
