I'm still navigating; and I'm new here. Of course, I'd be glad to help. If this is inappropriate, I posted a comment and this box popped up so accept my apologies.

Wotcha all. I'm getting a bit worried at the number of people applying with rather scrappy websites that are hosted by an outfit called godaddy.com who do ridiculously cheap domain provision (under $10 a year). Is it possible that some of our more persistent trolls are faking sites to get in? Apologies to anyone who legitimately uses them, but my spidey senses are tingling.
Also, another (minor) niggle I have is that the headers for the app emails don't have originating IPs, only Nina's/gmail ones. I'm not sure how I'd use this, but it might be significant. Fridge?
Third, I think it's a good idea when replying to emails/checking sites to make sure you manually type the addresses in. Some hackers have clocked on to the fact that you can use cyrillic letters which look like Latin ones to spoof host addresses. Probably not a big issue, but worth bearing in mind.
Otherwise, it all seems to be going very well. Yay!

Could someone be a dear and if sending off passes to Tom send off the two I passed yesterday? I have a few still pending response and don't feel like two is a substantial amount to send on their own.
Thanks.

Sorry to be a pain but i'm not going to be able to help out on this for a while due to lack of a computer with web access in the foreseeable future.

Although i do have one applicant still to get back to me. I will, of course, sort that one out and put the result through the database.

We only have 13 emails anyway but thanks for your work Ghadis.

A few months back I forwarded the email addresses of some friends of mine who wanted to join barbelith. One of them has turned up in the recent influx of new people, but the other person hasn't recieved a log-in yet. How can I check that they are on the waiting list and their details haven't got lost somehow? Is there someone I should PM?

PM me and I'll check tonight.

I'm one of the new people. It took me 4 months to get in the site, having applied in October 2005 and being accepted February 2006. I don't think that it is so bad that I had to wait that long, especially considering I self-nominated myself. I agree however that there is more risk to the community from accepting new people like me who came to the board from their own discovery of barbelith, rather than those who are known and trusted by at least medium-term existing members. There should be some sort of fast track progress for them.

Now i'm too new here to really know the history of this board, but I do know that it is rare compared to the state of messageboards across the internet, at least as far as its maturity is concerned. I even feel that it is a fragile kind of beauty, and new members, while important as energy infusers, are also a potential source of problems. Having people wait for a while to get in isn't such a bad idea, because those who appreciate the beauty and fragility of this site will have more respect for their position when they do gain entry, I know that I do.

I feel so fey, suddenly. So beautiful and fragile.

Not to say it isn't true, just... oh. My gorgeous wings -- they're being spattered with horrid dew!

Five records to be checked. Stop being fragile and get to work!

Um. I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere, but I'm having trouble parsing through all the relevant threads...

What exactly is the procedure for vouching for an applicant? Would the established member just PM whoever is reviewing the application?

Tryphena Absent

We usually pm you if an applicant has stated the name of your suit in their email.

By the way, just to keep you all informed, I'm not sending any applications to the group this week because there are a lot to send to Tom at the moment.

We have 33 in the inbox, the oldest being from February 18th. Here is a rundown of the number of emails we've received each day:

18th Feb - 2
19th - 4
21st - 1
22nd - 4
23rd - 4
24th - 3
25th - 2
26th - 3
27th - 4
28th - 5

So we're averaging about 3 a day. This might seem boring to you but just in case you were wondering...

Nina, I've sent the latest slew off, so you can forward away if you want -I don't think there are any passed but not sent in the db.

Suggestion: Would there be some benefit when sending an email to a prospective member to also direct them to the Barbelith Wiki with, perhaps, also a sidebar with relation to introduction threads? It'd give each new member some time to mull over general posting etiquette and suggestions before they finally join and might lessen initial faux pas and fuckups.
Or does Tom write something similar when he contacts them?

Jack Vincennes
17:35 / 02.03.06
Yes, I'm pretty sure Tom does that -I think he posted the mail he sends to new members in the old thread about this.

Oh okay, thanks Vincennes.

I hope someone actually reads this... I'm bowing out for a while. Someone is going to need to forward applications because I'm not going to do it while I don't engage with the board. I will leave the connection there so you don't have to worry about the same problems as last time. Once you forward an email message don't forget to archive it. If you have any problems than email me through the members list on the group.

Well, thanks for all that you've done for the apps Nina, it's been very much appreciated by everyone (I might actually be the last person on the board to thank you for all the work you've done...)

Is there anyone else who wouldn't mind forwarding the emails? I think the whole thing works better if there's one person at either end doing the forwarding to the group / forwarding to Tom.

I'll take on the forwarding. Would someone else update the database when a new batch comes in? Or should one person should handle both stages?

Jack Vincennes
20:19 / 07.03.06
I don't think it matters if the same or different people handle the forwarding / putting in the database, but I do think it would be better if there were a specific person to do the putting in the db; it's not the most inherantly efficient of systems and I think it's easier if everyone knows what they should be doing.

The database is particularly sensitive to inconsistencies (in the date field most importantly), so I agree that it's best if one person could look after it. Anyone willing to volunteer for that?

I just entered the outstanding apps into the database (The ones I had forwarded when Nina left).

So, er... yah, if you want to be the "I am the guy that forwards the mail from the gmail to the yahoo group" guy, I'll be the "I am the guy that enters the applicants into the database" guy.

…And Jack Vincennes is the guy who sends the passed email addresses to Tom.

Nice on, Icon.
I’ll forward another batch of applications from the Gmail account tonight. If you could add them to the database, we can all start putting our names against a few and get checking.

Ok, all entered & ready. Barbelith Application Squad GO!!

I know I don’t have the same knack with the whip handle that Nina does, but can the checkers rally please. There are 5 or 6 unassigned applications in the database and about 35 emails waiting to be forwarded. Bear in mind that we get 2 or 3 new applications a day.
If we can get the outstanding apps in the database signed off, I’ll forward another batch.

And honestly, I don't know what I'm supposed to do. Who should I send my recommendation to?

I just don't wnat to screw it up and keep him from registering here.

Have your friend drop your ficsuit name in his email to us. Then we read the email, ask you to verify, and pass him.

However, I got an emaiil today from someone who was entered into the DBase on Feb 12, whose status is still at 'pass'. Whoever's doing the sending lemme know, I'll PM you his email.
