ALL STAR SUPERMAN #8
Written by Grant Morrison
Art by Frank Quitely & Jamie Grant
Cover by Quitely
The Daily Planet regulars hole up as the terrifying Bizarro plague spreads across Metropolis! Superman’s trapped in the reverse madness of a dying Bizarro World!

Oh my god.

Rockets with the fuses in the tops. Square wheels. Cheese chock. Heat breath!

:-D

ouch.

Well, better than July 4th (the date I assumed it'd be when saw the cover)

That cubemoon (or is it a red dying sun?) looks bizarrely beautiful. And this cover'll be in the bondage section in all comics blogs, I'm sure.

Is that a cookie jar on the cover?

Red cubed moon. Beauty!

Bizarro Jor-El.

Heat-breath. It's a cool addition to the mythos, and I'm glad Morrison's cribbed it. Makes me wonder if Bizarro also has macroscopic vision, allowing him to see huge scale objects in spacetime...

Question about the Super-mythos.

Is the sun in Bizarro world red (and that gives Bizarro powers, instead of a yellow sun?), and is a moon of a red sun a red moon as well? Is that their healthy sun?

From Boboss' post, it seemed to me the red (sun? moon?) was signaling that Supes' is in a dying bizarro world, and they're perhaps sending him off into Earth by that dude's paper. Can't tell how much is supposed to be opposite (Think of Elaine Benes going, "do they say 'bad hello' instead of 'good bye', is bizarro superman black?" etc). Well, I can see major twisted fucked up things qlipoth-abyss style awaiting for us in that issue (specially, why is Bizarro wearing a George Reeves underwear?)...

And why the "sexxxxx" in Boboss' post? Saw a few "6ex" or (or a weird "Lex") on the rocket, is that it?

It's because the picture gives him a funny tingle in his penis.

He's not the only one.

glorious, absolutely glorious

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Instead of the Superman Returns Christ-pose that is often imposed on old Clark, here we have him strung up like a prize turkey by his old "awkward, tingly feelings" buddy, Bizarro (oh him, breathes Jimmy Olsen irritably), into a pose not unlike the yoga position called "The Camel," which can be a lot of fun, I'll have you know.

Plus, you know, fireworks = the world's oldest obvious stock footage cliche for BANG BANG, you know, the sexing.

And yeah, picture totally gives me that warm lustful feeling.

Plus, the fireworks remind me of Seaguy, and the pharaoh that launched the Moon into space.

Mug Chum
23:24 / 17.03.07
Yeah, reminded me of Seaguy too.

But I'm happy I'm not the only one who got anything weird out of it (I think I'm reading too many blogs making these sort of jokes). S&M session, playing in the background "sky rockets in flight! Afternoon deliiiiight!".

Mug Chum
23:42 / 17.03.07
oh and there's a handblender with the cookies, a cheese holding the square wheel, and a pink umbrella.

No wonder Superman has a "WTF" face.

Is that Bizarro Jor-El or is that Lex in Super-Dad drag?

Lex *is* one of the great vanity-dads of the Morrison pantheon. Like Dr. Midas or the Moon Mummy, but without any children. Without any obvious ones, anyway.

That 'Red Son' endpage reveal keeps popping up when I think about Morrison's handling of Lex in this series. That he's unknowingly the father of the entire super-legacy somewhere in the future. I keep thinking of what it would mean if he were trying to eradicate all trace of his progeny, like Cronus.

Spurred on by some completely unconscious Oedipal-defense paranoia from the future. Maybe this is his version of launching his likeness into space. Or his version of jamming his children back into their mother's womb.

Tbh, mate, I have to say, when you say stuff like this it makes me think, really, that, sometimes, you have trouble connecting with people on a day-to-day basis.

Do you?

Boboss just meant it gave him funny feelings, as iamus said, in his... well...

In his mangina.

Ach, there's nothing wrong with a bit of over-excitment, specially with this comic. On yersel' Sparrow.

Jamie's on the last lap now. Issue will be wrapped up and sent off by mid-week. Super-fun will no doubt ensue at some point very soon after.

"SEXXXX" was just a way of expressing that I'm very excited and slightly obsessional about the prospect of purchasing this comic

I suppose my private little colloquialities (new word!) could be confusing for someone who doesn't have Eglish as their first language, so no worries, Sparrow Man.

I just thought it was a callback into those subliminal messages from NXM or something.

Sometimes a few "insider" comments or jokes in Barbelith I get a bit lost (so whenever I get lost, I assume it's something like the debacle over the schizophrenic remark from GM, or the poster's comment about his wife, or we3's 'save' or whatever). Something I wasn't "there" at the time.

Trips: ouch.

In case anyone's interested the upcoming Titan published news-stand title 'Superman Legends' will be reprinting issues of A*S as well as 'For Tomorrow' and, just to annoy, that last two parts of the first Superman/Batman arc.

That picture am the worst cover ever!

~~~~~~
What's the rocket's destination, on the plan?
I also love the way even the bizarre city in the background silhouette looks kind of tied-together with string and haphazard.
Also, the way the Super-suits are clearly sorta shiny and semi-reflective. So many details of the artwork, and the colouring (the red glow illuminating subtle muscles) are just BOSS.
Ideally, I'd like everyone to discuss the next two issues in the character of Bizarro.
That am great idea. Or am it not?
No.
Shazam, I apologise for putting my post in the manner of a complete dick. You seem like a very intelligent person and it frustrates me when you get caught up in something that, well, doesn't seem to actually be there.
Don't worry about it, Trips. I just felt it was a mention on that NXM shenanigan with all those things written on the rocket.
And btw, did you mean 'yes' in bizarro-tongue?
I'd imagine one of the hardest things to draw well in the DCU is the Bizarro symbol.
Go ahead and try it, if you don't believe me. It's like trying to say the alphabet backwards (but easier in the sense that you usually aren't drunk and being ordered to draw the Bizarro symbol by an angry cop).
Agree totally! Especially love the way the leggings bunch up ever-so-slightly at Bizarro Jor-El's knees.
It is beautiful - and I do really want to get this - but it's been nearly 18 months that the book has been out now, and we're only on issue 8? Wasn't all that stuff about how Frank was way ahead, and that they would never be late one of the first things that GM said when talking about this series? I mean, it's not as bad as AS B and R, which, quite frankly isn't worth any kind of wait, but I think it's a shame that a book that is designed to attract new readers, and seemed to be attracting non-comic fan readers, is sooooo slow in coming out. The lateness of books have pushed me away from any kind of collecting. But still, it is beautiful. So, will it be, what, 3 years in total for the whole series?
Spaniel
I forgive this book because a) it really is ace, and b) each episode is sorta self contained
I'm kind of thinking that I'll get the first trade, also for those reasons. I just got frustrated because of the fact that my two sources of comics were postal, and they were a good service, but I ended up paying too much in postage for the few things that I was ordering, and going to a shop, which isn't that quick to get to for me, so ended up being annoying to go to a shop and find that the one of two books that you wanted were late again, and that all there was were more awful Geoff Johns books and Marvel Events crossovers....
