Sally Sonic? Got this from the wik

Her Royal Highness, Princess Sally of Mobius (Sally Acorn or Princess Sally Alicia Acorn) is a fictional character appearing in the North American Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons in 1994 and Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comics.

In Archie's comic Sally is considered to be part chipmunk (on her mother's side) and part squirrel (her father's side). In DiC's Sonic the Hedgehog she's considered to be a ground squirrel.

Book ends with an unknown quality... Vigilante's ghost raises his gun to Spyder's undead face, but I'm not sure either of them died again. I bet Vigilante shoots Spyder in the soul again, causing sincere redemption or something. That's a new spin on silver bullets and fatal blows.

But then, Vigilante's a gun-wielder, in a book titled "Bulleteer". And Alix is the compassionate bullet.

Does this Sally the Hedgehog come with a whistle with transformative properties? Cause if so, we may have disscovered our villainess!

I keep coming back to the idea of the "Spear That Never Was Thrown"....

Well, I'm seriously thinking the whole Lance Harrower naming has a lot do with this. Not only is she reluctant to engage in all these super-shenanigans (never was thrown), but why is the undead Spyder tracking her?

Besides traps being escaped, has anyone noticed the whole "marriage" motif going on here? Jake wants to be married, Alix and Mrs. Marcus are widows, Helligan's sister is getting married, Bulletman and Bulletgirl were a married couple, Gloriana ditched her husband, the Controls of New York City, Zatanna wants a man of her dreams, Klarion has parent issues, Miracle's undoing of Darkseid is his love for Jonelle, and Frankenstein will be meeting his Bride next issue.

But then, marriage is a trap you walk into, and choose not to escape.

We've got more parent-child issues too with Nepton and his momma the mermaid.

Child coming out from the shadow of the parent (Jake/Carla's dad; Zatanna and Zatarra; Klarion and his missing father; Melmoth and the children; Melmoth and Limbo Town).

But Nepton does it with stealth. She was getting on my nerves anyway.

Did anyone expect more out of Lil' Hollywood than we got?

Yeah! Maybe Alix's trio will ask Hollywood to coach the lot of them...

About Spyder, we see a glimmer of hope and life in his eye when he misses Alix completely with his arrow.

"I missed. I never miss...unless I want to."

But then that glimmer is overshadowed by the barrel of a big fat 6-shooter...courtesy of Vigilante. YEE-HA! You just can't keep a good werewolf down.

And now back to Lil' Hollywood. What is this super-impressionism that I just blew off as bad comedy? Does she indeed have a power? Why so young? Is she a veritable Mystique? Does she have a point?

Poor Tom couldn't find the hole. I hate when that happens.

If Alix should get an ongoing series of her own from this, is it safe to say that the Marvelesque adjective attached to the title is "The Impenetrable...BULLETEER"?

Well, of course L'il Hollywood's older than she appears: "She can make herself look a lot younger than she is," says Mind Grabber Man. She does have a power, even if it isn't as...evocative as some of the heroes.

Mind-Grabber Man is, by the way, gay for pay. Huh. Cute.

Spyder misses Alix, but really - what's the use of firing one projectile at another?

Sally Sonic's change-form looks a lot different from how she looked in Zatanna, but that might be artistic license.

Booster Gold & the original Bulletgirl.

Best line, I think? Alix: "What is it with everyone here? Why are you all so obsessed with being special?"

might be artistic license

I kind of doubt that though. So far, the artists have been VERY consistent with character's looks, Nebuloh aside. Cameron even mentions trading sketches with Irving. If a character looks different, I'm liable to believe it's an entirely different character. Paquette is kind of sloppy though. I'm just surprised they didn't keep Sook's distinctive hairstyle as a clue.

I too thought that Sally Sonic was the 75-slash-16 year old from Z's therapy group. Now I'm not so sure. Sure, the DC solicit described her as such but they've been wrong in the past.

Is there anything else besides the solicit that makes us think she's really 75 (aside from drinking her coffee black?)

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
20:36 / 01.02.06
Alix is the one Spyder identifies as drinking her coffee black.

Note, as far as artistic consistency, that the Vigilante is wearing a domino mask and no bandana when he approaches the Spyder. Not his usual presentation, even if he may/may not be dead.

I'd kind of like to see this series redrawn by, say, Chris Sprouse. Paquette isn't bad ... his Mind-Grabber Man is kinda hot, and Alix in costume is well-drawn and structured. But he definitely is sloppy in places.

Inferior Five reference with the Dumb Bunny.

I quite like the meta-element of the "Sweethearts & Supervixens" panel discussion. Mind-Grabber Man & "superqueer-bashing," how it relates to Northstar's only reasons for being high profile and his resulting treatment. MGM may want the prestige and hook of being a gay superhero, but he brings up the element of cliched treatment that often comes with it - reflect his outing as heterosexual with Obsidian's recent outing as homosexual. Of the two of them, Obsidian suddenly seems more self-assured and fully realized.

Susan Parr does a good job of both perpetuating the super-porn analysis being offered by the series, and the issue of revamping/trademark enhancement. Add Bulletdog to the Millions, Teekl, and Vanguard pile of animal sidekicks.

I need to think this through...

If Alix is the Spear Not Thrown, and her weakness is that she listens, might we see Glorianan defeated by Alix's empathy?

Oh, and just for the record, we already know that Ne-Bu-Loh is the Huntsman analogue. See Zatanna #3.

Aertho
21:41 / 01.02.06
I just saw how Paquette drew Sally's hair in one panel. Definitely swoopy enough to be the chick from Zatanna's group.

Mario: there's several huntsmen. Nebuloh might be Misty's killer/crusher, and Spyder might be Alix's... and yeah, Spear Not Thrown. Jean defeated Sublime by having empathy for Scott, 150 years in the past. If Sheeda are a future human, all Alix has to do is NOT do something in order to stop that future from happening...

Some annotations, sans page numbers:

"grew up in cruel orphanages, hiding enormous powers behind some timid persona"

That's how the original Supergirl's secret ID was set up.

On the panel:

(far left): "-ANE" almost certainly Bette Kane, aka Flamebird, a Titans ally.

(far right): Ms. Mesmer, a former Supergirl villain, last seen in WW #175.

At Lil' Hollywood's table: The guy in the striped shirt is possibly Pat Ryan, formerly "Stripesy" (the sidekick of the Star Spangled Kid) and occasional pilot of STRIPE.

Notice two figures dressed like Boy Blue, from issue #0. Given DC history, I'm guessing these are the new Blue Boys.

"Karl" might be the Flying Fox, formerly of Young All-Stars. The costume is off, but it's close.

I really love this mini. Of all the 7 Soldiers series, the two I'd most like to see as ongoing are Guardian and this.

I think Spyder misses the Bulleteer because he's still a hero somewhere inside, and Vigilante knows it. Greg isn't going to shoot Tom, he's going to put him to work, and the 7 Soldiers of Miracle Mesa will rise again.

(My guess is they're not actually dead/undead, but were patched up by the future medical enchancements of the Sheeda.)

The two Boy Blues at Hollywood's table tripped me out a bit, at first.

I adore Big Thunder and his pink lightning bolt.

I wonder what Justice League story Mind Grabber Man is referring to having participated in as a child...

Is MGM actually telepathic or something? He talks a big talk, but I didn't see him actually do anything.

Plus: a synopsis of that JLofA#70 would be keen... Nevermind. That'll be my next post.

From an online bio:

In his teens, Lucian Crawley developed astounding mental powers. Eager to make a career as a super-hero, with all the added fame and glory that would mean, he created a flashy, though juvenile, costume for himself and successfully foiled a few crimes as the Mindgrabber Kid. To his dismay however, he constantly found himself outshined by the popularity of the original Justice League of America. Jealous of the senior heroes, Crawley wished with all his heart that he could discredit them somehow.

Reaching out with the power of his mind, the Mindgrabber Kid managed to make contact with a group of alien spacemen, convincing them that the Justice League was a tyrannical super-regime, holding the planet in an iron grip. The good-hearted aliens immediately headed for Earth, determined to save the Earthlings from their super-dictatorship.

The Mindgrabber Kid manipulated the aliens and the League into fighting each other, also involving the half-lunatic hero known as the Creeper in the battle. The Kid soon watched the situation grow out of proportions, and after the League had won the fight, he explained the situation and apologized for his shameful behaviour. Though disturbed, the League and the alien crew both accepted his apology.

Okay, so I'm getting the impression that yes, the Newsboys of Nowhere Street are in league with whatever force is coordinating the development of the Seven Soldiers. Obviously, Baby Brains recruited Guardian, and Ali KaZoom had a hand in Zatanna's involvement, but did Hollywood realize she would encounter Alix through Lucian? S'kind of roundabout, considering Lucian had more time with Zatanna...

Metron's probably one of the tapped individuals, and what with Melmoth's confession to Frankenstein, I'd bet he was the coordinator. Any ideas?

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Note: Stripesy was actually Pat Dugan, not Ryan.

I quite liked the sexualized element of team-ups that GM plays up here, and while it fits into the series context of super-sexuality, you can hook it up to the Whip sleeping with Spyder (to help the team dynamic) and also - since a lot of Starman elements keep popping up - to Black Canary & Starman's liasions amidst their team-ups. MGM wants to "team-up" with Alix, and Big Thunder wants to team-up with him.

For the record, if we want to hook the Soldiers up the Big 7 JLA, I'd say that Alix=Wonder Woman.

Alix has got to be the nicest superhero ever to appear in comics. She's just great. Almost makes me think of Audrey Murray in fetish-bullet-gear. Seriously though, she's what superheroes are when they're at their best.

GM and YP really nailed the heart of the convention scene. This issue is rooted in just enough reality for the satire to work brilliantly. I was at the mega comic/manga/horror/sci-fi convention in Toronto last year (Frank Quitely is too funny, BTW) and from the panels to the line-ups to the stars and fans, I couldn't help but be reminded of that event. Great stuff.

Sally Sonic's transformation process is a crazy visual. Love how both she and Alix offer different perspectives on the notion of arrested development and superheroes. Mature bodies are often inhabited and desired by immature minds, and the growth of one does not necessarily parrallel the growth of the other. Very interesting

I love how Thumbilina shrinks by way of needle into her purse, which becomes her vehicle to get to and fro. Metaphor for addiction to the material, materialism and mobility, plus consciousness reduced to focus on purely material concerns?

I hope Alix gets an ongoing. Maybe a team-book with Thumbelina, MGM, Big Thunder, and I,Spyder. The thought of that just made me really happy for some reason.
