I've been operating under the theory that Ray Terrill is Supernova. And Ray Palmer is the new Starman.

That or Lex is right and it's Superman (I never believed that Clark Kent theory).

Nah brah, that isn't Superman- read the rather excellent 'Up, Up and Away' storyline in Superman/Action Comics and you'll see that Supes has definitely lost his powers during the 52 year.

Mario
12:52 / 28.10.06
That's rather ruled out by the fact that

A) Supes is powerless during 52
B) We see them on panel together.

So, I may be being a little dim here, but who's the Egg? Nothing comes up in Wikipedia for Chang Tzu (except for a early 20th century poet who disappeared from history after being convicted for working with the Japanese in WW2, but there was no mention of him being a giant egg).

The name is new. The character, OTOH, is old:

C) I was joking.

Apologies if this has already been posted elsewhere in the thread, but on iTunes, if you search under ‘DC Comics’, there’s a 52-themed podcast (free to download) with contributions from the creative team, including Morrison (allegedly –I haven’t listened to it yet).

I downloaded it once, but it played back at half speed, so haven't listened yet - Am trying again now.

Osiris needs a smack, and the Sivana Family needs its own series like NOW. Preferably with more plot, though. Magnificus!

Indeed. That or an animated series on Cartoon Network.

This is, oddly, the first issue of 52 I've felt any kind of strong reaction to in a while. What did other people think? Thumbs up or Down on Week 27?

Ralph with Spectre's beady skull eyes - nice riff on Golden Age comics. And who thinks that Deadman shows up next issue?

John Octave

Time Stealers/Masters, a Waverider-skin death-dealing Skeets and yes Virginia, there IS a Hypertime? Thumbs way up.

The Question's revelation? Not a big surprise, really, but thumbs up. I like all the Crime Bible stuff too.

A dark, broken Ralph friggin' Dibny who says things like "You're here to suffer, you homicidal bitch"? Well, not my idea of a good time. Thumbs down, but it's almost saved by "Take me to Nanda Parabat" at the end. All right, shit's finally connecting up! One of the better issues in the whole series thus far, I thought.

Dear Ralph: find Animal Man in space and tell him you and Fate can take him home in exchange for Buddy asking Grant Morrison to bring your wife back.

Yeah--if it wasn't clear from this week's 52 Pickup, I thought this was one of the strongest issues yet. Not one of the most fun ones, mind you, but a lot of the stuff they've been setting up is paying off in really dramatic ways. Loved the scene with Montoya and Charlie, especially.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
03:34 / 10.11.06
Ralph's a drag now. Even if his character development is (moderately, cock-eyed) logical given what they've had done to him, maybe, I'd rather read his Super-Buddies stuff where he's arguing with Plastic Man over who's a better shape-shifter and having fun with his wife.

I'm not sure why Nabu would need protection from the vacuum of space from the Spectre.

Renee and Charlie remain one of my favourite plot threads, honestly; Renee sways into the Chandler-esque narration but it works in an amusing way. And Batwoman returns! I hope this doesn't mean they've introduced a new character only to kill her off in some boring-and-done-to-death prophesy thing.

Jake, Colossus of Clout
13:39 / 27.11.06
Good issue this week, particularly the sequence with Magnus on the secret island of mad science, which is fast becoming my favorite plotline. I'm assuming he stole the Russian guy's gold watch (and probably tons of other stuff from his fellow mad scientists) for parts to build some new Metal Men. It'll be interesting to see how that works out for him sans meds.

It was nice to see Green Lantern, Flash and Wildcat because I love those guys, but it would be nicer if they had some kind of role, y'know, where they actually did something. Alan Scott is ridiculously powerful and knows just about everything there is to know about being a superhero. I find it difficult to believe that he would just stand by while villainy was clearly in the air, but we'll see. I'm hoping to see those three old fellas hand Luthor and Co. their asses.

Phex: Dorset Doom
12:07 / 30.11.06
Another good issue- one of the best I can remember.
We get to see the Bat-Family doing what they do (minus their prodigal daughter, who apparently they've forgotten about), more Batwoman, more Renee turning into The Question (hopefully leading to the rumored 'Gotham Confidential' series that was mooted after the much missed Gotham Central was canceled around the time Infinite Crisis started). Nightwing corrects the whole uncharacteristic 'let's get out of Gotham and party with models for a year' thing, because it's apparently his role to actually do something while Batman's feeling sorry for himself (see Infinite Crisis).

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
15:40 / 30.11.06
But forget about all that -- what's important is the BEAUTIFUL Metal Men two-page origin at the back. Much like Eric Powell's Metamorpho treatment, I want Rouleau to do a Metal Men series. Goddamit.

John Octave
17:48 / 30.11.06
Completely. I love the way Magnus is standing in the first panel with his arms outstretched and a devil-may-care grin, and his word balloon that isn't there reads "Yeah. I made these. Fucking fabulous!"

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

I like the redesign he gave Platinum - away with the pillbox hat for an oddly surgeon-like quality.

The Falcon
20:12 / 30.11.06
Yeah, I was greatly impressed by that also - oddly, because I recall Rouleau as a distinctly unpleasing artist on the end-days of Mackie's X-Factor (don't ask, I don't even know why.)

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
20:26 / 30.11.06
He also did, back in the day, some really shit fill-in issues of Impulse. His Metal Men work in these two pages blew me away after slogging through a somewhat meh Bat-centric 52...his designs were so sexy and slick and fluid, fluid in that way the Metal Men are supposed to be.

*deep breath*

Supernova is Natasha Irons. Wearing a superhero costume/armored suit disguise to drive Lex Luthor mad with frustration and paranoia. All the while publicly brawling with Uncle John and hanging with NuInfinityInc to take Luthor down from the inside.

Eh?

Eh?

Nah. Didn't think so.

The thing that throws me off is...why did Cassie/Wonder Girl think Supernova's voice sounds exactly like Kon-El's?

I'm enjoying the series so far; looking forward to the pace being picked up. Seeing the Sivana extended family is very bizarre indeed; great to see the eevil Dr. Veronica Cale from Greg Rucka's Wonder Woman run show up on the wonderfully nutty Island of Misfit Mad Scientists.

And DC continuity mavens note: this is actually the SECOND time someone has tried to use [the villain known in the 50s-60s as Egg-Fu] ....John Byrne used him without using the racist name, he was a giant supercomputer gone awry, in Byrne's Wonder Woman run.

And I like the idea of Renee becoming the new Question once Charlie bites it -- or might she be called "The Answer"? Either way, she better not have a face.

Dibny is onto Supernova now.
He drops a little hint as to his identity, which if you catch it makes a lot of sense.
Did anyone else pick up on that one? I don't want to blurt it out, but if I'm right, I'm glad he's back.

might she be called "The Answer"? Either way, she better not have a face.

Love the name.

"The Answer --- IS ME!!!"

She could be the woman of a thousand faces (like Darkman), rather than the woman of no face. Would provide some nice reverso-hero goodness.

What's your theory, rabideyemovement?

gridley
03:49 / 08.12.06
Ralph mentioned a device that accounts for some or all of Supernova's powers.

A Green Lantern Ring? Not likely.

A Dial H-for-HERO dial? Interesting, but even less likely.

A Gravity Belt like Ted Knight designed for Star Spangled Kid? Seems unlikely.

A Mother Box? Supernova's build doesn't look right for Orion, but maybe Scott Free? That would explain Ralph and him seeming to know each other personally.

Does anyone remember the last time we saw Scott Free?

During IC, scanning the Dibney's place for clues and security breaches is the last time I remember seeing him.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
03:59 / 08.12.06
I liked the ill-fated Green Lanterns' designs. Lady Styx feels a little too derivative of the Sheeda Queen, though, only it's Sheeda...in....SPACE! Or the Borg or whatever.

Whose origin is it next week?

Thought the dissection of the superguys while they were alive was rather grisly. Maybe I'm turning soft. There's been a fair amount of surprising gore in this series TBH.

Supernova = Golden Age Superman AGAIN?

Heh... she's so bad she eats power rings for breakfast.

I liked Captain Comet preparing to jettison his "primary consciousness." I'm assuming it's going to end up in a younger, hipper, possibly female body.
