Yeah, it is odd that Grant doesn't do the commentaries. I believe he described the experience as like fucking an eel, something that was fun once, but would be crazy to try again, so it wasn't a bad experience, but was likely more draining than expected. Still, I'm guessing it's more a time issue than some kind of vendetta against the project.
Those commentaries are pretty cool, and have given some useful information, like why the Bulleteer here doesn't match the way she was portrayed in Seven Soldiers #1.
As for the series as a whole, I've been reading it in trade and love it. I'd imagine the pacing works even better in trade, because you don't go weeks without the storylines you're interested in. Each issue just felt more substantial than those ultradecompressed six parters Marvel is so fond of. There was room for a lot of character development and narrative digressions that you wouldn't have in a monthly book. I really care about all the characters who would previously have just been random DC people.
I love the stuff that Morrison did, but I liked the other stuff a lot as well. As people above have said, the only clunker plot was the Steel and Infinity Inc. storyline, but when you read it in trade, that goes by pretty quick, and for me, the good stuff far outweighs the few week moments. |
