Hi. I'm Sylvia. I've been looking for an intelligent, fairly on-topic messageboard for a while now and I've really dug some of the conversations I've read here while lurking. So I've taken the plunge and joined. I can't even begin to choose which topic to post in first, they all look so good.

Anyhow, pleased to meet all of you.

Hello, Sylvia!

What sort of things are you interested in?

I'm hoping it's cocktails. We need new blood in the lateshift.

What sort of things are you interested in?

Videogames, roleplaying and board games, writing, the sci-fi/fantasy/horror trifecta, comics, literature, and movies. You know, generic Internet Nerd answer #3. (I have some questions for the Temple and I'm really liking just lurking the threads in the Headshop so far though.)

More specifically, I have an enormous love for the Lovecraft mythos and anything that tries to incorporate it, the invisible art of videogame game mechanics and the all-too-often ignored art of videogame writing, and looking at robots and cyborgs and artifical intelligences in fiction.

I'm hoping it's cocktails. We need new blood in the lateshift.

Ha, I can only drink about two drinks before gettng sleepy. I will mix up mocktails, however, and slug dozens back in rapid succession, pretending I have the fortitude of a GOD. (No one needs to know, right?)

Hi everyone. I joined a few months ago, but was too timid/overwhelmed/fearful of looking stupid to post anything. Slowly overcoming that.

Currently I work (work? ha!) in the IT industry, drink too much coke, like dancing, tigers and the colour green.

ooo - Just had a thought. A green tiger that likes dancing. That would rock. Yes. ROCK!

I don't remember seeing him dancing, but I'm sure he digs it...

Anyway, welcomes

Greetings,

This is my first post, though not the first thing I've had the urge to post. I found Barbelith by doing Google searches on the difference in use between Loa and Lwa, of all things, and found the Temple to be quite interesting. Much to my chagrin, I couldn't respond! GAH!

So I read the FAQs, and poked around a bit to figure out why, and what rules, and how to become a member. Sure enough, now that I can reply I don't remember the names of the threads I liked anymore.

Regardless, I'm sure I'll find new threads in the Temple that fascinate me. I admit I don't have a lot of spare time these days to read, much less post.

I seem to have spent the last few years as a Full-Time Pagan, and Part-Time Computer Science student. Any time left spare after that goes to my primary and secondary boyfriends, my family and friends, working conventions and faires, and trying to record my insights in LiveJournal before I forget them.

I'm not sure what else you'd like to know... Oh, basics!

I'm a 27-year-old female redhead. I live in the SF Bay Area. I miss my cat because she lives with my mother. Anything else?

--Ember--

P.S. No, I'm actually a scorpio, but it's a good guess.

Good Evening

Will flattery get me everywhere? If so, this is one mighty fine sight you've got going on. A veritable stockpile of information, wit and intelligence.

A bit about me: mid 20s, female, Virgoan, Australian, beer drinker, avid reader, sometime writer, gig-goer, museum lover. I was introduced to this site by a good friend who thought it'd be right up my alley and by gosh, he was right.

I plan to hang out at The Temple a lot.

It annoys me when people say 'aksed' instead of 'asked' and 'somethink' instead of 'something'.

I am not adverse to being greeted with open arms and fanfare.

That is all I can think of right now, but in conclusion I would like to say...hello.

Hello! I'm new so please be gentle! This is my first post on Barbelith. Interests include writing music - well when I say 'interests' its what I am trying to do for a living!

I have been lurking for a while but have decided to take the plunge...

Hey there, I too am new. I discovered Barbelith, like quite a few others, through The Invisibles, and have been fascinated by many of the discussions (on Barbelith).

I'm 31 and living in London. Originally from South Africa but have lived here for 7 years now (and not intending on going back).

Now back to lurking

Hello, I'm not new. I don't sign my posts. Co-incidence?

Actually, I will continue to sign my posts unless there's a rule against it, as I have a personal custom of signing all my posts. Newness has nothing to do with it.

But thanks for the snark. It wouldn't feel like home unless somebody was making fun of us.

There's a sort of convention on the board that people don't generally sign posts, is all. Some people find it irritating, and it's arguably superfluous when your name already appears next to your post anyhow. If you really want to sign off each time then go ahead, but be aware that lots of people will post muttery annoyed comments if you do.

It's an interesting demonstration of the liminality of the medium, isn't it? If one were writing a letter, it would seem perhaps brusque not to append one's name to it. If one added one's name every time one finished saying something, one would fairly shortly be identified as a tupping loonbarge.

o tempora, o mores.

Yeah, I know. It's not the oppinion I mind at all, really, it's the mode of delivery. I mean, I got a bit of grief for it over on Brunchma too. (I wasn't entirely being sarcastic when I said it doesn't feel like home unless people poke fun at me!) But folks got used to it as a personal idosyncracy, I guess.

The thing is, it's one thing for somebody to say "Wow, you've been around forever, and I see you always do this. Why do you sign all your posts? It reads like you're speaking your name at the end of every entry, which I find irritating."

It's something else to get snarked at a la "You're new, and different. Different is bad, therefore I will point out your newness." within my first week here.

But I guess hazing is a natural part of any group acceptance process. I should probably suck it up and accept that.

xxxHausy_Katxxx in your excitement over the furrie avatar you forgot to sign your post.

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW YOU RESPONDED UNLESS YOU SIGN EVERYTHING YOU POST?!?!?!?!!?

It's silly. It's even more silly if you understand why people hate it, and you decide to keep it up regardless. To my mind it's exactly like stating your name at the end of every entry while holding a sign with your name clearly written on it.

EmberLeo,

Difference is great and much celebrated here. May I politely suggest you consider why people are playful making fun of your sig habit? I for one am trying to playfully explore how sigs on this board affect my experience.

This medium limits how people experience each other, all I know of you is from your posts. Will you consider that your habit of signing everything is problematic for me as I read a thread?

To help me express my viewpoint please consider that I read threads as if people were conversing in a room. Reading smoothly from one post to the next blends as when one person pauses in speech another voice fills the silence. Signing posts breaks this flow of conversation into soundbytes on this board. It is, as others have noted, not required as each post is marked by the format. Therefore your choice to sign your posts is as awkward for me as if you were in fact saying your name after every moment you spoke.

My intention is not to haze you but rather to turn my frustration into a playful exchange with other board members and possibly illustrate my point in bold strokes.

While some might find a signature anoying others don't give a toss. Equally the habit of members of longstanding to snark at newcomers lack of knowing, or resistance to assimilation into the boards more trivial customs, might be found by some to be a bit of a pisser too. Just sayin

... and I wouldn't want to discourage new people who may have interesting things to say from posting because of pissy board etiquette. 33 doesn't sign his posts. Guess who's posts I've found more annoying?
