Hello. I've been lurking for an absurdly long time, and I am hoping to start making eye contact and finding some pals to sit at the lunchtable with me. I'm from New York, where I sell real estate and listen to the Clash and occaisionally write.

No, the Clash is for pretending I'm still an angry young punk on my lunch hour. During appointments it is all about Kate Bush. "This Woman's Work" will put the most disagreeable bastards into a state of tranquil susceptibility. Trick of the trade.

Hi all, I've been aware of Barbelith for some time but have only recently gotten over my inbox agraphobia enough to stop lurking (still 900+ unread messages left to clean up though).

A couple of bits out of my bibliography might tell you something about me:

---------------------------

"I'm not afraid to die," I said. "I'm not afraid to live. I'm not afraid to fail. I'm not afraid to succeed. I'm not afraid to fall in love. I'm not afraid to be alone. I'm just afraid I might have to stop talking about myself for five minutes."
Friedman, Kinky (1993)

--------------------------

“There is always one too many around me’”- thus thinks the hermit. “Always one times one - eventually that makes two.”
I and me are always too deep in conversation: how could one stand that if there were no friend? For the hermit the friend is always the third person: the third is the cork that prevents the conversation of the two from sinking into the depths. Alas, there are too many depths for all hermits; therefore they long so for a friend and his height.
Our faith in others betrays in what respect we would like to have faith in ourselves. Our longing for a friend is our betrayer. And often love is only a device to overcome envy. And often one attacks and makes an enemy in order to conceal that one is open to attack.
Nietzsche, Friedrich (1891)

--------------------

Well, thats enough about me for now

Hello all - this is my introduction.

I'm a 26 year old English guy, who currently lives in South Wales, earning my living by working for the Government. Boo!

When I'm not doing that I indulge in my other interests. I'm a Buddhist, and spend a lot of time studying and practicing, and am a follwer of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. I'm an avid rock climber, although I've only been doing it for about half a year - I'm still not very good, but I'm noticably improving. Due to the weather, it seems that I'm going to be stuck using indoor walls for the moment, and I loathe them with a passion.

I love films, and have a strange attraction to mobster flicks. I get snotty about cinema and have a real gut-level aversion to Hollywood crap - but I do like some nonsense, usually zombie related. Music's a big passion as well, of most varieties. The stuff I listen to the most is usually electronic and more on the ambient or experimental side of things. Brian Eno is like a god to me.

As well as Buddhism, I am interested in magic(k) and divination, especially the Tarot and the I Ching. I find both extremely fascinating, and useful - more for exploring the subconscious than genuine "fortune telling". Fortean things in general intreague me, although I am deliberately agnostic on such subjects - favourites being UFOs, polts, and Urban Legends.

Writers and thinkers that get me all excited include Robert Anton Wilson, Philip K. Dick, Carl Jung, Terrence McKenna, Alan Moore etc. You know the sort...

There's probably some things that I've missed, but that'll do for now.

Paul

Which non-Hollywood mobster flicks are you a fan of, then?

In the world of whispering paper, I would also recommend Genderqueer, edited by Rikki Anne Wilchins IIRC, and those old stagers Gender Trouble (Judith Butler) and My Gender Workbook (Kate Bornstein). Soon you could be Barbelith's leading expert on gender as well as terrorism and international relations, and wouldn't that be lovely?

If you're feeling a bit tired today, the short takeout is that Virgin Queen takes a feminine pronoun.

Hello everyone! This is my very first post on Barbelith so please treat me gently, my name is Quantum and I...

Shit it, no it isn't. Excuse my timeslip- I'm adjusting to the integration of my future self and am oscillating back and forth through the timestream. Go about your business, nothing to see.

Hello all,

My papers have just come through, which makes me yr shiny newest member. And i'm flying to India for a fortnight tomorrow, so, er, I'm probably going to disappear again shortly. So here I am, hit and run.

(Bio: Pedant Hack, from Scotland. Likes: pictures and fighting about philosophy, sleeping in. Dislikes: getting up at 4am to fly to India.)

Hello!

I've been lurking around here for a month or two, I think. I just registered (10 minutes ago, actually)

I live in the south-west of Norway, in the neighbouring city to the Oil Capital in Norway (Stavanger, it's the only thing this part of the country got going for itself except for some fjords here and there)

At the moment I'm taking an introductory course in philosophy and I think I'm doing quite bad actually.

I read books, working on the beat classics at the moment. My music tastes is predominantly rock n roll from the 60's and upwards. Allman brothers, beatles, stones, the dead.

Well, that's all I can think of right now, and I got to get back to some school work.

Hi folks,

Just joined this morning (morning, here in Asia). Have done a little bit of lurking prior to getting the nod from the team here, but not enough to get a real feel for the atmosphere yet.

On to me, I'm a 29(ish) year old Irish bloke who has been living in Singapore for almost five years now. I work for a software company which is a fair indicator of my interests outside of work. Aside from things technology related, I listen to a pretty wide variety of music (my iPod comes everywhere!) and hang with my esteemed colleagues in dereliction.

Hi everybody!

My name is Corey (in case you don't notice the name to the left).

I'm an editor for a comic book that was supposed to come out through Speakeasy in June. Current events require a change of plan.

I'm also an actor in Los Angeles. I've got a show coming up on April 6 at the M Bar in Hollywood at Fountain and Vine with the sketch comedy group Foe Pa.

I'm sure I'll be babbling about both more. But I'm also looking forward to babbling about other things now that I just got accepted here! I feel like I made it into the cool kids club!

Thanks for reading!

Toran
02:47 / 01.03.06
Hey all!

My name is Jon, but I go by "Toran" on the internet.

I come from the Midwest U.S. (fly-over land, as it is sometimes called).

I'm a junior in highschool; I love writing, at this point my favorite subject is grammar and composition. I also like foreign languages quite a lot, I am currently in French four.

With regard to non-academic interests, I enjoy computers very much. I'm also fairly into swimming, I lifeguard at a local pool during the Summer. I'm also getting into freelance writing for a website, which should turn out to be a fairly good source of income.

I've been interested in joining Barbelith for a rather long time. I just recently got invited, and I finally got signed up today.

Anyway, hello all! Thanks for reading.

I'm Neal I live in Memphis, TN, you've probably heard of it and it is nothing like you imagine it to be. Unless of course you've been here in which case it might be something like you imagine, but not quite. They are building what I suspect is a temple to Dagon downtown (they call it a "Bass Pro Shop") bet you didn't imagine that! I enjoy Hoodoo, Studying but not practicing Vodou and Santeria, Re-nascent Christian Gnosticism, collecting toy skulls, yo-yo's (skill toys in general really), Anarchy, punk rock and David Bowie. I used to be in the Air Force, but I am better now. I've only recently gotten into comic books, and feel like a Philistine (no offense to any Philistines I hope) for having ignored them all these years an feel like I have to consume them at a furious pace to catch up. I am also currently working to restore the sense of wonder I carried with me until about age 15. So hi!

bi-identifying, you big ol' fencester

[Newb health warning: using the words fence and bi in the same sentence can lead to unwieldy threads and nastiness unless you're sure you know what you're doing.]

Anyway, welcome all!
