I just like the fact they've been there for just over a month and Science was washing the bins last night. You just know he wouldn't confuse sponges and All-purpose cloths.

Science probably has a special arse-washing cloth.

Meanwhile, from the Manchester Evening News (courtesy of TMO):

Craig has spent his time in the house making tea for Anthony and Maxwell, and has been the butt of many laddish pranks, but seems quite happy in this role.

In fact the hairdresser from Norfolk has said he wants to live with the pair after the show has finished so he could look after them properly.

"I'd be like the gimp," said Craig. "I'd be allowed out of my box every now and then!"

More evidence of Craig's g*mpl*n.

Off-topic, I know, but with the asterisks for some reason I always misread it as "gamelan". Actually, playing the gamelan would be a great task for the housemates.

What Craig is doing is pretty tough work.

From what I hear, gimping ain't easy.

...I'm sorry, I'll get my coat.

If Craig is really confused about his sexuality, what's with all the knowledge of gimps and submissiveness? He knows enough to know what a gimp is. Do you mean that's his plan-word-we're-not-supposed-to-say? That's he's appearing to be confused so people are interested in him and keep him in to see if he'll get it on with Anthony, when in actual fact he's prolly totally clued up on himself?

Ganesh
19:13 / 06.07.05
Anyone who's seen Pulp Fiction is likely to know what a gimp is.

My current theory of Craig is that he defines his sexuality much more in terms of being a submissive/slave/gimp than whether he wants to be sub/slave/gimp to males or females. I think the latter part's what he hasn't yet worked out in his head, hence the 'confused' tag. I strongly suspect he's played out sub/dom scenes before but with a woman, and the stuff with Anthony and Maxwell may be the first opportunity he's had to try it out with males.

But yes, he's fairly clear on what he wants done to him; it's the gender of the 'doer' he seems uncertain about.

So then, what the deal is with Maxwell and the strokey hand, strokey hair thing? From what Endemol have decided to show us (a fairly issue-tastic subject in itself) Maxwell would not immediately spring to mind as a good example of a heterosexual man who is totally comfortable about close physical contact with other men. Yet he clearly is in Craig's case.

I know it's been said upthread that he and Anthony are humouring Craig and I can understand this in Anthony, but I'm confused about Maxwell.

All true, Olulabelle. I suspect it's simply a feature of the claustrophic House setting. You have to make alliances with the people in there and they won't be like the people you normally seek out. IRL Maxwell would be lagered up wiv 'is mites dahn the pub, laughing at Craig ordering a G&T in the lounge bar and fondling on his cherry.

You reckon Maxwell's not comfortable with male-male physical contact? I don't think I've seen anything to suggest he's uncomfortable in the way Science, say, is uncomfortable with it. For all his other faults, I think Maxwell is comfortable with who he is.

I know it's been said upthread that he and Anthony are humouring Craig and I can understand this in Anthony, but I'm confused about Maxwell.

Craig's utterly unthreatening: he's perhaps the antithesis of the idea of the 'predatory homosexual'. He's infantile (even down to the huuuuuge head) and feminine without being overtly, scarily gay, and he seems to evoke strong paternal responses in all the housemates - although I think Maxwell sees him more as an indulged family pet. They've also both got the shared Saskiaffection to keep them warmly bonded.

Two of Maxwell's friends were on BBLB today and they weren't what I was expecting, I thought they'd be much more inarticulate than they were but they actually gave a good analysis of what was happening in the house with the social groups. They didn't strike me as the kind of people who would shy away from physical affection at all, they were very reasonable and seemed pretty nice really.

I think I read online somewhere that it was the shades they forgot. Apparently they had to wear them on faces or dangling therefrom at all times.

Btw, Maxwell?

And, lest we forget, he has worked in Top Shop, which is a sort of gayer-type occupation (fashion), which'd make him more comfortable with male-male affection than Anthony, who's only worked in the wholly heterosexual world of "'70s dancing".

Dammit, I'm not questioning my initial urge to vote out Maxwell...

I didn't actually say "I thought he was uncomfortable", I said "Maxwell would not immediately spring to mind as a good example". For example, not the first person I would have picked for being totally cool with it.

But I hear what you're saying.

I don't have E4 so I don't know about his friends.

Okay, I agree I wouldn't immediately think of Maxwell as a touchy-feely metrosexual type. I do think he's a happy little chipmunk in terms of his physical and sexual identities.

I think Olulabelle's right. Maxwell's a Lad and I am surprised to see him expressing tenderness towards Craig, physicially. Without cameras on him and with a free choice of company, Craig would be beyond the pale. And he's pretty pale already.

I can't understand why anyone would feel or express tenderness towards Craig anyway. Irritates the tits off me. Drown him in the jacuzzi.

They're really fairly stupid about these little missions. They've practically all had one now, and they know that if anyone finds out the mission is void, so why don't they just shut up when someone is doing something weird?

Eugene answers things too quickly. Most people leave a pause, a little beat before they answer a question, but Eugene doesn't leave any gap at all. It's like his brain goes twice as fast as anyone elses.

Oh POOR Eugene ... honestly, my little heart just melted for the poor guy. I've known so many blokes like him (particularly at Uni) who are just so awkward and socially useless and desperate for approval and beat themselves up so much for not gaining it. Aw no, it makes me squirm with pity to think about it.

It was so painful to watch him
a) deny really badly that he'd been given a task
b) imitate Makosi's words (which really gave the game away) instead of just her physical gestures
c) break down when he knew he'd failed and run to the diary room

oh and this was the worst bit:
d) he didn't care as much about the reward as about winning his housemates' approval, and when they all gathered round saying it didn't matter it just made him more upset. There's nothing worse than people being kind to you in that situation.

And that heartbroken, self-hating, not-wanting-to-make-a-fuss little voice!
"I'm ... I'm fine. Just go on with the quiz -" *sob*

I feel very protective of Eugene now. I shall consider him my little red-tailed phascogale from here on.

Geeks are an endangered species in that house.

Yes. Science's 'two juggernauts' analogy was fairly spot on.

I was more specifically referring to echoes of of their behaviours lula.
Science/Alex manically cleans while Maxwell/Johhny/Presumed man of the People throws suspect water/pees in the shower/kitchen.
Science/Alex calls it "Disgusting" is outraged.

It's a natural reaction of course but Science has just been reminding me slightly of Alex recently.

I just very much enjoyed Science's long rant about his life struggles and how he can cope with what's thrown at him in the future because of his troubled past etc. etc.

Eugene looks confused, nods and says "yeah" a lot - then when a break appears in the torrent of words says:

"So when you get out you'll look at that [insert electronic musical recording software brandname] won't you? The lower-end Mac stuff is getting pretty good ..."

Ah but you see Maxwell's a new lad

I think he's more canny than that. He's obviously intelligent and has good social skills, and the laddish things he says are straight out of some kind of '1970's Sweeeny Lingo Handbook' by Dennis Waterman. I think I read somewhere about how Maxwell was a posh kid until he moved to North London and had to change his accent. This suggests to me that the whole "lad" thing is an act: he's a mockney. I'll bet he has a fairly mixed class and cultural background, that he's an inbetweener of sorts, and that there's more going on behind those dopey eyes than he's letting on. It's as though he and Anthony are competing for the Lad, Lass, and Gay vote. That's why they haven't kicked off with Craig, yet. For example, last night Maxwell got so annoyed with Craig's incessant "Do you think I should have a shower?"-type of questioning, that he snapped and said:

"Craig? Do us a favour and....... just go and have a shower?"

The words "f**k off" were written all over his face. But like I typed: he's a canny lad.

Do you think the housemates heard / felt anything? For all they know Armageddon is under way.
