Did Epop really wrap this up by telling us we aren't human? That's what not having the 'humanity' means, right? Not 'humane' but human?

Wow.

I'm so glad he's protecting us not-humans from the morbid morbid future.

I'd like to cut Boy in a Suitcase more slack, as far as trust and vouching goes, but if his whole magick shtick is being afraid of the future...

It irritates me to no end that I just want Epop, to go look at a leaf. First one he sees. Just stop and look at it. And tell me that whatever cobbled up that leaf is really some dark vile machine of cthulian destruction.

People shouldn't be having that much not-fun. Regardless of experiences, past or present, regardless of situation or the fact that empathy isn't feeling what someone else is feeling but simply hurting because they hurt. If he's having a good laugh at us, it's one thing; if Epop thinks he's on the level and he's honest about all this I hope things work out for him.

And I'm annoyed that it took this level of disruption for me to realize how much more pleasant Barbelith is than most messageboards or communications nodes on the interweb. And why.

I'm extremely annoyed that I voted for a ban realizing there is no such thing as a total ban, so it's kinda a superficial gesture anyway. It's kinda deluding, in a way. It's not like it's my call, or Whomever Decides has to take my vote into consideration, but it still feels kinda... How (in)frequently does this kind of thing happen and I just don't notice? (Will have to BarbeSearch.)

I have been left wondering if Epop equates personal attacks with attacks on his theories about evolutionary psychology. I don't think it's too much of a leap to assume that he has a lot invested in them being correct, seeing as they seem to function as the theorectical biological underpinnings of his practice, and perhaps his own healing process.

Just a thought.

In the name of what watches over us when we stray, I close the connectors which grant foolishly left open when he first left this place

Well, all this is a bit academic now as Epop has put the bad mojo on Barbelith and killed it dead.

We've had about four banning threads, I think, DD, including the mutation of the "Conflict and Complaint" thread - the process was started by Ganesh, over Shadowsax. Before that, we had banned I think about a dozen people, mainly for trolling or an easily recognised -ism, on the odd occasion for not being able to interact with Barbelith. Others have blown up and stormed off the board, with varying degrees of success, usually past a point where another board would have banned them.

However, now the connectors are closed, it's hardly worth talking about this, is it?

No Haus it absolutely isn't, i agree. Unless we can start a forum called The Fucking Yawn Fest of course!

Well, Harrison, this whole episode does seem to suggest that if and when a new forum is set up to take over from Barbelith, it certainly should not be called Barbelith, since the name _does_ seem to attract people who behave in actively damaging ways.

I don't know about that to be honest, at least I can just opt to ignore the individuals, that I personally find offensive, it's the other slightly more dull & prominent continguent that deserve a new forum identity in my opinion. I am excluding your good self by the way...

It's hard to disagree with that sentiment.

What about calling the new forum (I know there's a thread about this elsewhere, but my ideas seem too important for that even if somebody else has already suggested them,) 'The Shadow Gallery', 'Dark By Then. As Dark It Gets', or 'What Makes Cats Scream Like Babies, In The Night'?

Could you be a little clearer on what you mean by this, Harrison? I'm sure we're all dying to here what a hero of the board such as yourself thinks is boring and annoying behaviour on the board, so why not come out and clearly say what you mean?

Maybe "The House of Secrets"?

Harrison: I think there's a huge problem about maintaining space that is both playful and safe. Generally, I think we do a pretty good job of it, but possibly at the moment we are too sensitive to safety, I think again because we can't _really_ react quickly, so there is this extending doctrine of preemption. Recently, there have been some banning threads which have seemed to me to be reorganising the relationship between being a pain and and being a bannnable pain, which have resulted in... well, I guess either in the person having at least a forum in which people can talk about how they could play in a more considerate way, as a best case, or in a kind of acceleration to bandouchiness.

Possibly Barbelith is no longer workable - I think that, without a technology refresh that will probably never come, it is lkely to become an accreting series of barbannoys on all sides. The only real solution to that may be to move everyone over to a new board, under a related kind of airquotes-brand-umbrella-airquotes, with Tom as a consultant/godfather rather than a hands-on-levers helmsman. I'd rather that board didn't have quite the same brand associations, because at the moment, as I've said, it means that the people who apply are disproportionately comics/magic people and tend to turn up with unrealistic expectations, which aren't really fair to them, to us or, really, to Grant Morrison himself.

Come on Harrison, you can be a bit more specific. Why don't you just come out and say "I find people taking issue with misogynistic behaviour to be kind of a downer, maaan, and can't see why you uptight squares can't just chill out, smoke a fat one and enjoy my wacky Rag Week humour"? Is the answer perhaps "because I don't want to disrupt the illusion that I'm essentially a liberal right-on fellow, lest I stop being invited to the cool parties, which is the only thing I value in life"?

I tend to agree. He's a married man these days, so would a board dedicated to the Steveness of Steve necessarily help him maintain his vows if it was full (as I hope it would be) of people pretending they had the same stats as the cheerleader in 'Heroes'?

Pretty clearly, I'd be proud to be a member of such a board, myself, but I do wonder if the mere existence of the thing mightn't do bad things to Steve's head.

He's got the dealership to think about now, I suppose. Plus the idea of his dreams of becoming an underground movie star, like Jeff Stryker, gently, but incremantally receding with every mouthful of food he feeds his chldren.

Is he happy?

I hope he is.

Either way, though, it might be a bit terrible if Steve's dreams were continually haunted by the possibility of willing co-eds.

That's true. And annoying, I like the Barbelith brand.

people who apply are disproportionately comics/magic people

A lot of the comics and magic people are nice though, I think it's the Invisibles
comics and magic people who cause the trouble. Disproportionately is an important word there I think.

Yeah that's exactly what I mean Flyboy, well done you got it. You sir are a complete idiot, go back to 6th form.

Haus, I think you've hit the nail on the head really, I guess I'm worried that Barbelith has changed from a place that could & would, wantingly, challenge vastly opposing view points to a quest for a back slapping online utopia. I totally appreciate that there are obviously certain opinions that don't deserve the space here & am in full support of these cases being dealt with swiftly. Just starting to get the impression, possibly wrongly, that there are some people on here perpetuating situations that could be dealt with more effectively thus dragging the board into some rather stagnent waters. Maybe some of the old guard (me included) could do with taking a holiday and see how the new folk get on with the gardening?!

Hm. I'm not sure about this, but...

How about "The Mind Garden"?

Gardens are safe. And things grow in them. And you can play in them.

And it's got nothing whatever to do with anybody's fictional anything. Which might be an advantage.

I quite like "The Invisible Gardener", taken from John Wisdom's parable of the Invisible Gardener

It speaks about falsifiability and faith, is utterly gender-neutral, and even has a link to GM's meisterwerk / mostly poorly drawn, as -'90s-as-a-Tamagotchi comic for nostalgics.

'The Garden Centre'?

With 'The Spirit Garden' for temple, 'The Mind Garden' for head shop, 'The Barbeque Patio' for gathering, 'The...' Oh.. I've run out of ideas.

In all honesty, i think 'Michelle' would be a lovely name for a new board. Think about it, it's a really nice name.

'Michelle'.

I'm of the opinion that "These Woods" would be a good name.

But that's because I'm a fan of Stopping by Woods on a snowy evening, and is therefore not 100% relevant.
