Donfeld: Why?

Because we've had a number of new people join up and act like knobbers in recent months. If they're being pointed here and recommended by existing members who should already understand how the board functions, what the general mood of the place is, what's deemed acceptable and what isn't... well, we're pretty much fucked, no?

Ohhhhhh, I thought you meant if we used the sponsor system we were fucked because we wouldn't get enough new people or something. Misunderstood.

Maybe new people would be more careful if they knew that someone was vouching for them.

In the discussion of the keffiyeh, examples are posted of people wearing keffiyehs and expressing unacceptables from the left. Stoatie points out that he is not wild about a site that captions a picture of somebody holding a placard saying "Islam is not the enemy" with the legend A serious case of Wishful Thinking. (Their caps, not mine, of course). The provider of the link says that he missed that one, but leaving the editorialising of the photographer aside blah blah fishcakes.

Consulting the site, I was curious to see what other comments one might miss, and what other editorialising one might leave aside. The disdain for a woman wearing a T-shirt with a naughty word on it? The more vitriolic the message, the more smug the smile? Of a poster offering free Chomsky lecture CDs and asking for a $1 donation You know you've fallen on hard times as "the world's leading intellectual" when they can't even give away your lectures? The sneering at old lesbians (ew!)? "Hey, check out the HamASS on that chick! I'd like to occupy her territory"? The phalanxes of Palestinian youths wearing terrorist-style kaffiyehs and chanting slogans in Arabic (Arabic, I tell you! In the Bay Area!).

Still, there are indeed some truly awful messages being carried around by protestors, advocating ideas or making statements which are absolutely disgusting. On t'other hand, in the "hall of shame" containing the most awful examples of protest, it seems that there is a pretty much 50/50 split between these messages and - God save us! - women who are older and perhaps of a larger build, and in one case - save Aunt May! - bearded, with their tops off.

When will we learn of the dangers of breasts? WHEN. WILL. WE. LEARN?

Yes, I had to go and have a shower and a little walk after that one.

The fact that we are haemorraging decent posters as fast as we can recuit them is making me thoroughly dischuffed.

That just makes me very, very, very sad indeed. Possibly a little tearful.

Without any reasons given, I don't think it's fair to presume that Ganesh leaving is due to anything specific here rather than external influences.

Assuming I'm not missing something very obvious, I also think that all this talk of haemorraging decent posters is complete arse. Barbelith has taken on some fantastic new blood in the last couple of years, and most of 'em still post regularly.

Do people honestly think there was ever a time when the board was more up for self examination and more inclined to take on hate speech than it is now? I used to buy into that way of thinking, but I've been spending a lot of time in the archives recently and I've seen nothing to back that assertion up. Nothing at all.

I do, however, appreciate that some folk might've had a more progressive vision for today's board than is reflected in the reality. I'd like that too.

I didn't make any presumptions, did I? It's just that, naming no names, we seem to have lost a fair few people over the last year or so for various reasons, I get the suspicion we're likely to lose more, and it's a bit of a shame. That's all.

I feel this recent post suggests that Ganesh's departure was due to disillusionment with Barbelith.

A large chunk of the grey forums at the moment. Generally speaking, it's the behaviour of the more established posters that's making my eyes tired and my head hot, not the newbies.

A time to stay away, I think.

Sorry Mordant, you didn't make any presumptions - I'm guilty of conflating what you said with a bunch of other stuff and that was unfair and a bit dumb - but I do think that "haemorraging" is a little strong in light of the quality folk that we've recruited.

W, I'm treading fairly lightly around this one, because the guy's gone and so can't reply, but... well, the post you just quoted is about as useful in determining what's driven him away as the latest is.

I dunno, Randy, W's quote is a lot more information rich than G's most recent and last post, and it was only put up a month or so ago. I wouldn't read too much into it, but I'd also be inclined to take it into consideration when asking myself just why the Elepant has gone done and left us.

Yeah, you're right, "haemorraging" was a bit drama-queeny. Sorry.

Just being picky, edit my post down too if you like! So it's just the first sentence. Delete this one too, to avoid confusion, if it's best.

Not being picky at all, in my estimation.

You'll have to move for your own posts to be edited, I'm afraid

Starting to wonder if the "Chop My Willy Off" thread has maybe outlived its function? The tone is becoming rather ...awkward... and I'm wondering if some of the leftover energy might be directed over to Head Shop topics covering reproductive rights? The thread's become a bit edgy.

More like a barbe-mild-annoy.

Your post gave me the shits, good and proper. But I felt it to be disappointing, more than anything else.

This post in the Headshop philosophy thread. It's someow simultaneously self-referential and oblivious, how on earth is the irony lost on the poster? Have they read any of the board *at all*? What makes them think that Perhaps it is all hinged on maturity? is a helpful comment on contemporary philosophy?

Quants:

When people are too lazy to bother but hey, have an uniformed opinion, a discussion about philosophy draws the same douchebaggery crowd and behavior as other subjects requiring a basic understanding of the topic.

Jesus, you look away from the board for a day and there are half a dozen threads of several pages sprung to life in response to one or two dickheads posting one or two bigoted posts. I know it's the only way to do things as it stands but christ it's tedious to wade through an hour or two's reading to conclude what was obvious from the first post which sparked the controversy which is that the poster is an ass and no amount of arguing is going to change that.

Shit. I'm flyboy without the wit.

Bigoted? Really?

I'm not even sure what it is people are pissed off about anymore. I thought it was because I am said to think Barbelith is 'sensitive'. It could also be because I'm not that fussed about able-bodied comedians playing people in wheelchairs. Take your pick, but I don't think either of those is bigoted.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do about this at the moment. I'm honestly sorry for derailing the thread, but I'm not sorry for anything I've said to Haus and it would be disingenuous of me to pretend otherwise. I think I'll refrain from posting for a few days, as is recommended in these cases. If anyone wants to discuss this, I'm all ears, but I have no idea what I can do about the fact that Haus' posts rile me so unnecessarily so that I make such a public fuss. Everything he posts towards me feels like a personal attack, almost regardless of its contents. I don't think it's possible for us to interact on anything approaching civility for more than two posts in a row, due to what I see as him baiting me, and what he (probably) sees as me reacting out of proportion to minor barbs. I'm not sure if I (or anyone else) has the patience to work through any sort of 'Why I can't get on with Haus' discussion, and I don't think it's necessary given my status as a background-level poster.

I'm trying quite hard to not make this post a woe-is-me/ban-me-then!11! kinda thing, but it really does boil down to a question of what the community wants. If you (by you, in this paragraph I mean you as Barbelith, or at least the people that wish to post regarding this situation) don't like me, or my posting style, or what I talk about, then tell me. If you don't want me here any more, I'll go, it's a simple as that. I think that if, as Quantum says above, most of you think I'm a prick, then please say so. You talk regularly about the difficulty of getting rid of problem posters, why not just tell me that you don't want me posting here? I'll listen, take it on board and leave without a fuss, if that's what the board wants.

Well then, read my lenghty explanation. If you don't understand it, ask, politely, for help. It's really that easy. I went to great lengths to make it satisfactorily comprehensive and far more polite than it needed to be.
