"The Invisible Garden" *sounds* absolutely lovely and conjures up a host of fine, spooky images, but I'm straight away finding myself thinking "does it *have* to have the word 'Invisible' in it?" as it seems very likely to keep the site attracting exactly the sort of arsefishes that have apparently plagued it ever since it changed name from Nexus to Barbelith.

More on "the Garden Centre"

Music could become "the Rock Garden".

Um. tee hee

Hmm, how about if one of the admissions criteria of the as-yet-unnamed board be that Grant Morrison may never, ever, be mentioned by name? To do so would result in an instant ban. Instead, we could call him, I dunno, bell hooks or something. That'd keep the fuckers out, and I love the idea of 'Proposal for a Group re:read of bell hooks' Zoids' type thread titles.

I'd imagine anyone googling the site for Morrison material would, at least once upon a time, have a lot more luck with 'Grunt' or 'Gir McPerson' or 'Grimmy Foxson' or whatever was chic to use to avoid invoking his name.

It hasn't seemed to put a dent in things, and yeah, comics being comics, the topics really are often going to involve discussion of Morrison. And y'all can't get rid of the Comics Forum. Well, you could, or Tom could, and I wouldn't have a lot to say about it, but, y'know, it'd displace so much.

I like "These Woods" and "The Garden Centre". The former's nicely mysterious and suggests that the space is to be explored and is probably in the business of exploring a not entirely knowable world. The Garden Centre is just funny and oblique and not at all po-faced or self important, which I think is a real risk when you start to consider names like "The Mind Garden" (okay as a forum name, perhaps), or - ick! - "The Invisible Garden". That one smacks of elitism, self-importance and doesn't move us far from the branding we're trying to escape from.

Ugh, I'm dreading the idea of putting Barbelith down, but I'm increasing sold on the idea and it makes me really sad. She's a handsome old girl despite her faults.

Policy could be "The Tool Shed".

Creation could be "the Hothouse" or "the Greenhouse" or even "the Compost Heap"!

Books... "the Winter Garden"?

Conversation could be "the Conservatory".

And because of Promethea my brain's telling me that comics should be "the Roof Garden".

Anyhow, yes. I like "the Garden Centre", too. T'would be fun. As a name, it's completely stripped of any baggage.

It *is* a shame that Barbelith seems to attract these folk trapped in weird dominance-infested mind-sets. If it's a name change of the community I don't see why it's any different from a ficsuit name-change? Although presumably it would take quite a bit of time to clear with everybody...

If 'The Garden Centre' is a serious possibility, why not just 'Ikea'?

I'm having real difficulty seeing a downside to calling it Grant Morrison, Mark Millar, Warren Ellis and John Byrne Can Suck on My Sexy Sex Bits Whilst I Use My Khaos Majiykckckcks to Awaken the Sheeple! or Gummmwejbucsomssbwiumk-mas for short.

Why not just a random number? Random numbers always sound cool, and never really go out of style. 18776739444

I would post as www.18776739444.com, I would. I would be terminally out of luck if I forgot the number or lost a reminding e-mail directing me there, but it'd be cool while it lasted and I could probably coerce a search engine into giving it up using various names/words likely to show up on one page together only here.

But there'd still be Morrison-talk and such. Unless there's no comics.

This would be my annoying version of 'Won't anyone think about the children?'

I'm annoyed that you're being dismissive of other people by calling them whiners. And whining while doing it. I like you better when you're sober.

Heh, yeah sorry dude, drunken blip.

The only real solution to that may be to move everyone over to a new board, under a related kind of airquotes-brand-umbrella-airquotes, with Tom as a consultant/godfather rather than a hands-on-levers helmsman.

The trolls were created by man.

They rebelled. They devolved.

They look like humans. Some think they are human.

And they have a plan...a plan to insult people all over the shop and call anyone who complains 'politically correct.'

I think These Woods sounds ace and spooky, though.

STEVE.

I'm prepared to take part in acts of civil disobedience to get my way. Though I won't be blowing myself up. I'd be rubbish and would probably just lose a hand or something.

Yeah, I like that last one.

Ok. So would anyone have any objection to Barbelith being called 'Steve's Lovely Garden' instead?

I think we should at least consider calling it Planet Steve, in honour of Brendan Cleary's poem of the same name...

Ticker

Kind of sexist all these Steve type nominations dontcha think?

I mean Steve-ness really doesn't allow for many other kinds of gender manifestations. True in our hearts we want Steve to encompass all of humankind, to really wrap us up in a flannel hug of great goodness, but someone will get left out. It will most likely be a third grader from Idaho who in a fit of pique and angst will write us nasty posts about, oh, shutting down our connections to Steve-ness.

I urge you to consider the children.

Excuse me? Are you under the impression that there is something inherently gendered about Steveness? Isn't that, oh, I dunno, a little sexist of you?

This must be taken to Policy.

I'm quite serious about this joke. I'd happily log-in to STEVE every day.
