Or perhaps you could start your own thread and include spoilers in it, since people managed ably to avoid spoilage in the other thread.

Ayup will do so then Xoc. Whichever causes the least furor you know. Ta.

I think it might make sense, DS, in the context of this particular film as there are some plot points well worth discussing that just couldn't be with people who haven't seen the film but might yet. However, it could be that nobody is going to want to discuss the film online who hasn't already seen it, particularly now it's out on DVD. My aversion to spoilage is probably only valid when referring to television series.

That's kind of what I was thinking but didn't want to barge in with alot of spoilers in a non spoiler thread. Will possibly post something tomorrow.

In general, we've always been fine discussing events of movies in movie threads with a spoiler warning. For instance: remember X2? I'd be far happier to mark the Descent thread - especially given it's now a DVD release - as containing spoilers, and have one thread.

In general, unless it's a very special case, it's always been protocol for one thread, one topic. The recent exception - which I guess is justified - is the Lost threads. I've moved to lock the topic, and have made reasons clear to DS - and if he reposts in the original thread, I'd be happy to mark it as spoilerific.

How does this sound?

Shrug
21:55 / 08.11.05
Eh so I'll do that then? I don't mind re-editing or providing a link to the locked thread to encompass that element of discussion. Although I'd rather the decision to change the thread to spoilers (or not) be made before I potentially post something that fucks up someone elses enjoyment of the film.

Belated linkin, for those who're interested Who's Who In The RRM Suit, to this old thread. Worth following BB's link, too.

Eh okay I'm just going to do it then, I'll clearly mark the post spoilers though.

OK - I've put in all necessary requests to mark the topic as Spoilery, put your thread into it (where your holding post is right now) and then delete the old topic. Thanks for making this easy, Double Shrug.

Can anyone think of a better summary of the police shooting on the tube thread, considering what we now know? And is it worth kicking it over to the Switchboard?

I've suggested one.

Yeah, that works- Switchboard, you reckon? I'll propose a move- people can yay or nay as they see fit.

Yeah, sleaze - the threadstarter - wrote that one.

So, we’re onto a new page of Moderation Requests and I suppose this last request of mine got missed. I’ll just make another call for *any* Art/Fashion/Design mod:

The second image that Tom posted to this thread, here needs fixing, possibly with a simple [image broken] notice, because I'm not sure precisely which Malevich painting he originally posted. And Manny’s first link in this post might also be fixed, somehow, but I’m not too sure if he was linking to an image or to an essay there.

Thanking you.

This comics thread hurts my eyes. Can I kill it please?

Regrettable Juvenilia

Well yes, of course it hurts your eyes, it's the Comics forum. However the first post is funny, and raises a serious point. That alone makes it better than the majority of threads in that forum. I'm not seeing how that thread deserves deletion.

And once again, I suggest that not liking something is not in itself a good enough reason to try to get it deleted. In a perfect world there would not be a need to say this, but this thread has demonstrated that people are prone to agreeing to do so on very sketchy grounds, and until we sort that issue out we might want to think of more coherent arguments than a variation on "I think this is stupid" - that wouldn't be a good enough reason to delete a post, much less a thread. Even if your reasoning is crystal clear to yourself, try to explain it for the benefit of the people reading this who are moderators - that is, assume they are critical intelligences, even if such an assumption is counterfactual. Alternatively, ask people to look at something and exercise there own judgement about what, if any, action should be taken.

I think, at this point, the "New Forum Proposal" thread in Policy would fit better in Convo. Can it be moved?

I’ve been thinking the same thing, to be honest. It does now seem to have been comprehensively repurposed for whimsy. If anyone did have a serious suggestion for a new forum, I’d recommend starting a new thread for it, rather than trying to reset the tone of that one.
I say punt it over. Dissent?

...comprehensively repurposed for whimsy

It's a safe bet it was conceived in whimsy as well, and as such never belonged in the Policy. Punt away, you magnificent bastard.

Well, in my defense I would just say I asked about it here rather than proposing the L&D. Anyway, Haus has made a valiant attempt to drag it away from the ironic 'who's stronger' nonsense it was when I complained about it, so I'm appeased.

would it matter if he hadnt?
is there absolutely no room for silly discussions of the funny papers on barbelith?
it would seem a brisk position to take, if indeed you do.

Hmmm - it's more that we're meant to try to apply the same standard to the discussion in the Spectacle as we do to the Revolution. On an personal level, that's probably true, but the demographics skew it somehat.

so no silly discussions of the funny papers, you think?

personally i think the silly should be part of a good life.
by extension i think that 'the best discussion on the web' should probably include some as well.
i can see how it would be inapropriate to silly up a serious discussion, but i see no reason why a silly disccussion should not be enjoyed by folks who feel similar to myself.

when you say the above i agree in relation to keeping things on topic and striving for the best. i dont know if i agree in terms of keeping it serious.

Thank you for the support, Mr t, but I don't know if there is anything so-called 'silly' about Wolverine, or the Punisher.

I mean would you want to get into a fight with either of them?

And if so, which one?

I request that Ganesh' "darqqe" comment be edited out of my "astral home" thread, as it has nothing to do with the topic at hand and could be considered thread-rot. If you do so, you can also feel free to edit my own remarks to him out, for if his original instigating remark would be gone, it would make my response to him a moot point.

Ganesh
08:46 / 22.11.05
No probs with that. I'd no idea my comment would result in such perilous threadrot.

(Although it theoretically could've been on-topic, I suppose: if I were sufficiently skilled in remote travel to visit Sypha's astral home, I daresay I would find it more 'darqqe' than 'Willy Wonka'. But I'm not, so I didn't.)

Point taken re: Wolverine, Lady - there's a broader question about silly threads (which rarely get less silly) and what to do with them to be had also.

In the wake of the totally predictable news, courtesy of Loomis, about how disastrously over-budget this thing's likely to get, would it be an idea to move the Olympics 2012 thread, currently in Games, to either the Switchboard or the Conversation? Without wishing to do down the Games forum or anything, I do feel that what currently seems dead on course to be a worldwide classic of incompetance, hubris and utter stupidity might benefit from being slagged off somewhere a bit more, erm, visible?

Loomis
09:39 / 23.11.05
I'm really torn on that one Alex. It would get more traffic in the Switchboard and in many ways it's more about the socio-economic issues than the sport, but I'm somewhat hesitant to take one of the few potentially meaty threads away from G&G.

What do other mods think?
