I'm not sure how - "fairness" would dictate I start by deleting Smoothy's response to someone quoting Morgue. Righteousness says otherwise.

I always felt the unspoken rule of the barbequotes thread was that each quote was only worth posting in the opinion of the poster. If the merit of every single supposed 'great quote' was debated every single time the thread would be 10 times as long and awful, frankly.

General rule is that you don't delete for threadrot in the Conversation. In this particular case, there's been a brief diversion, which has happened before when something profoundly offensive or fatuous has been quoted, and any moment now it will burn out and normal service will be resumed. Deletion would be heavy-handed and unnecessary, IMO.

Awww, if I can't be heavy handed then I don't want your revolution.

It doesn't seem to have burned out.

Yeah, but it will.

Arriviste, I’m sorry for any part I played in offtopica in the Barbequotes thread, but all the way through it you’ll find posts of comment about the quotes. And as Haus says, it’s the Convo and I don’t see that particular thread having any special status within it. People can object to the direction the thread is taking *in the thread* (as Triplets has), and people may or may not heed it. But if mods are going to step in to delete off-topic posts in the Conversation then God help us. No really, we’d need God to help us.

Yeah, well, people commenting on quotes is fine. People commenting on comments, commenting on the comments about comments, posting pictures, bickering, posting what seems to be the first thing that comes into their head... Maybe they should do that in some other thread.

ONLY NICE THINGS
13:25 / 30.09.05
Maybe they should, but thhey aren't and it's not within our remit to stop them using moderation as a tool in the Conversation. Lord Morgue's sheer threadrotting tenacity is always a thing of wonder to behold, but even it shall pass eventually.

Maybe they should do that in some other thread.

Maybe we could start a playpen thread where it's cool to smear faeces on the virtual walls.

Ah, well, that comes back to what we want on barbelith and what we're prepared to do to encourage it.

Sorry, that should've been %Maybe we could start a playpen thread..%.
'Some other thread' probably doesn't need rotting either. There's no way to raise posting standards except by example I suspect. Hopefully it's good practice for parenting.

I hate to be a pedant, but the Lab has a thread entitled "The [greater than] $100 Laptop." This is much less newsworthy than the intended "The [less than] $100 Laptop," I feel. Won't someone have a look?

So, this thread was originally in Gathering. The other day, I put in a request for it to be moved to Creation, because that’s where most of the other Zebramag threads/requests for submissions have been, I thought.

I just refused a mod request from Mr Six to add a bit of text to the first post asking for a move to Conversation, and instead I’m asking here - any Creation mods, could you please move it into Convo at your earliest convenience? Ta.

The Masuimi Max in A,F&D needs a topic abstract, and also a warning that it links through to an NSFW site...

Would conversation moderators please consider deleting Legba's latest thread, 'Things it would be really cool to do' (or similar title)? The opening post is too revolting and offensive for words.

Triplets
15:17 / 10.10.05
Mm. I'd be up for deleting the thing but - as a new mod - am a bit wary of over-stepping boundaries.

Would the majority be okay with a deleting and them PMing of Legba Rex to explain?

I'm not a conversation mod but I'd second KCC's request.

Mazarine
15:33 / 10.10.05
Wow, that was indeed pretty gross, and utterly worthless, but I don't really think it needs deleting personally. I'm gonna propose an NSFW addendum to the title for now, but if other convo mods want it deleted, I won't veto.

I've agreed Sally's request... dunno about anyone else. I mean, I doubt I'm ever gonna be reading that post again, but not sure if it warrants thread-death. However, if Sally's request gets nixed and someone proposes deletion, I'm not gonna argue.

Though this brings us back to whether we treat sexist posts the same way we treat racist ones.

Yup, it went through, Stoatie.

Has there ever been an entire thread marked as NSFW before? - off the top of my head, I can’t remember seeing one. And if this is setting a precedent, I’m not sure it’s such a good idea - you’re effectively fencing off everything that gets written in a thread from every moderator who uses barbelith from work and has to worry about these things. I thought that was the reasoning behind changing NSFW pictures into links.

So, as you can’t move the text of that first post off barbelith - unless you just delete it - would using the black bar tags to obscure the post do anything to make the thread ‘worksafe’ again?

Like this:

blah blah offensive NSFW post goes in here blah blah

And, that same code if anyone wants to cut 'n paste it:

<b style="font-weight: normal; color: #000; background: #000;"> blah blah offensive NSFW post goes in here blah blah </b>

..I mean, I don't much like the look of the black bars, but I think they might have a use as a Slappy Mod Hand Of DOOOOM-type thing.

I've got a real issue with marking text as being NSFW. I'm sure that, using this thread as an example, there's a great number of Headshop and Switchboard threads that could and should be similarly marked.

The thread's idiotic, but NSFW?

Our Lady Has Left the Building

Hmmm, a lot of posters I find it hard to remember, is this the sort of thing Legba would actually start, or do we have to consider that his suit has been hijacked?

Spatula Clarke
20:24 / 10.10.05
I wouldn't have expected Legba to start something like that, but there's always the potential for people to have sudden brainmelts. Unless anybody hears differently, I think it's far too early to be calling hijack on this one.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

Yeah, with Randy on this one. Unexpected, but not particularly suspicious.

Ariadne
20:35 / 10.10.05
That was my first thought on reading it, that it didn't sound like something Legba would write. Not that I know Legba's suit well, but this seems a bit of a startling change in tone.

Our Lady Has Left the Building

I've moved for locking and deleting, looking at it again I just think such stuff shouldn't have a place on Barbelith, even in the Conversation.

20:53 / 10.10.05
For the record, I disagreed the delete request because - although I agree with you that that thread is excecrable - I just don't think we have any business disappearing threads simply because certain mods think they're shit.

Sorry, wait until I'm not around and try again.

Sorry guys...look, the suit hasn't been hijacked, I've just been being a bit of a dick, basically. I'm sorry about this and I'll not let it happen again.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
05:38 / 11.10.05
Of course, that's exactly what we'd expect someone who'd stolen your suit to say...

How come that thread has been moved to the Policy, of all places?

All Acting Regiment
07:45 / 11.10.05
Yeah, can we not just delete it? I'd be quite happy to.

I'm begining to wish I'd gone with my original idea of "get a Frenchman, have him eat gold dust and then make him do a shit, give it to mr Kipling: here's your french fancy you old quack". For that thread, I mean.

Spatula Clarke
07:53 / 11.10.05
That move being a simple mistake I could understand, if it weren't for this whole distributed moderation thing. Did somebody honestly think it should go here?

I've put it forwards for deletion.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
09:46 / 11.10.05
I thought I'd put it up for deletion, if in fact I'd accidentally hit the wrong box and got move instead then yeah, I'm surprised that no-one that voted on it noticed my reasons for deleting it and thought, 'oh,I wonder why he's moving it to Policy then?'
