Incidentally:

Bedhead, I didn't propose the lock, but Lady suggested that it had a potentiality for nastiness (imo, Haus had long since lost his tolerance and temper therein, and I agreed) and it had strayed so far off-topic as to move forum, so.

You seem to be missing a conclusion from this sentence. Could you qualify what nastiness in this context is, and what signs allow one to determine with confidence that the risk of nastiness has reached a level that justifies moderators taking action, and whether that action is universal across any thread identified as having that potentiality?

and it had strayed so far off-topic as to move forum, so.

Dunc, that’s what confoosed me. Possible reasons for locking the thread when it was in Comics (it’s off-topic, isn’t really likely to get back on-topic for as long as Someone fails to realise they’ve lost/keeps on trying to get the last word, so a temporary lock could maybe have stopped that argument from just continuing indefinitely) aren’t really still there after it’s been moved to Convo, where veering offtopic is Teh Funny and louismichel neverever posts.

Hm, whether or not a catch-all Morrison Interviews thread could ever actually work is something else, could probably continue in Sleaze’s thread about the Comics forum, if anybody fancies it. I do acknowledge the possibility that it won't take. Like I say, I was just thinking maybe there's a way of gradually containing this stuff.

And for as long as this place is called barbelith, we’re *always* going to have deeply committed Morrison fans bedding in here. It’d probably be a sight better if Morrison could maybe start his own official forum, like just about every other professional comic writer has managed to do.

Yes Morrison, stop lazing about and get with the catering. Also, shut up.

P.S. that shut up was meant for Morrison in the vein of the thread currently in Conversation in which the hoardes tell Gaiman to shut up. Just thought I should make that clear.

It occurs to me that we could probably pull the skills together here to build and maintain one for GM - it could be an ad-heavy moneyspinner for Barbelith. Throw in an e-shop and we're all laughing.

Sorry. Back ontopic now.

Ooh. That is a good idea. Just as long as we have the facility to move topics off barbelith and onto Grantmorrisonworld. Swingballawaria. Whatever it’s called.

Obviously I hadn't realised it'd be particularly contentious to agree the motion, or I'd not have done so. It was in effect a dead thread, and I doubt it'd've got funnier - if it's still open you're welcome to disprove this idea. I don't really enjoy the bit where everyone chimes in with a rhyme (although I always remember 'espadrille this thread' because that's an especially good word) or punning, but I shouldn't really have denied the rest of the forum this fun.

Sorry.

Re: the 'swingball set', I think you overstate the case somewhat, Haus, but I acknowledge this particular demographic is extant.

I don't think you should not do things because they're contentious. Part of being a moderator is being prepared at times to do things which leave you open to demands for an explanation. On the other hand, the obverse of that is that you should be able to give one. Likewise, while distributed moderation provides a means for moderators to act according to their conscience, that does not excuse moderators from any accountability.

One of the themes that recurs in this thread is that people, when asked to explain why they did something, either express an argument based purely on personal likes or dislikes or that their understanding of the action was disporportionately affected by what the proposer of the action wrote about it. This concerns me.

I'm not sure exactly why, but this thread title and abstract are really, really bothering me. While the contents of the thread seem to take the situation seriously, the title seems... flippant, I guess, given how serious the topic is, and to be honest makes me extremely uncomfortable. I'm used to Barbelith dealing with things like this with some measure of sensitively and the more I think about it the more the tone of the abstract makes me angry. I'd be happy to elaborate on this if people feel it needs discussion. I didn't want to bring it up in-thread, but I've pm'd Morph about it.

Yeah, good luck with that. Morpheus specialises in predicting doom, and then getting a bit excited if and when it happens. His hand-rubbing response to hurrican Katrina makes the fact that anyone is still treating him as a worthwhile human being an incredible evocation of the redemptive urges of Barbelith. If you want the title or summary changed, I'd ask for it here.

Smoothly
12:17 / 13.12.05
Maybe it’s my redemptive urge, but I think that thread title and abstract is pretty good, considering the author’s established style.
I see that it could be read as flippant, but ‘Tookie Dies Tonight’ sounds ambiguous in a way that feels okay to me. It could sound either celebratory or deeply mournful, depending on your point of view. The abstract the same.
Am I being generous? What is it that bothers you, FWP?

I'll suggest a modification to the summary so that it's actually informative.

I've moved to amend the summary to 'The execution of Ex-Crips leader Stanley Williams in California, following the rejection of a clemency petition by governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.'

Thanks Mordant and Lady.

Smoothly- honestly I'm not sure. As you might imagine I am vehemently anti-death penalty and high profile cases like this always bother me so maybe I'm being overly sensitive. Now that the abstract's changed I don't have a problem with the title other than that it reminds me of a segment some radio show did called 'Tookie Must Die,' but that's probably my own problem.

As for the abstract (stupidly I failed to copy it): as far as I remember it was "Tookie is looking for a pardon in all the wrong places. The Terminator... wait, who was that again?" It's the first part of that that bothered me; I think it has to do with the implication that Williams was doing something foolish in turning to a reprehensible bastard like Arnold Schwarzenegger for a pardon, when obviously Schwarzenegger was his only option. Also, the phrase sounds to me like something out of a children's book. A lot of this I think is due to the man's name being Tookie- his (children's) book series is called 'Tookie Speaks Out Against Gang Violence' which is probably a lot of where the association comes from, but basically it sounds like a character in a kids' book. With the children's book association, I think, came the implication that he was being silly. Hence, taken as a whole the title/abstract seemed pretty flip. I'm not sure how much sense that makes, but it was very much a gut reaction. My stomach was literally clenched when I first read the thread.

I've got no problem in pointing out the irony of Arnold being the Terminator, by the way.

dopey moi mispelled a word within the threader for the 'Tom Robbins' post in books, many apologies....'glorious' being such a grand word deserves all the tick-boxes it can get.

No need to post a request to change a topic abstract on a thread you created yourself here moonweaver. If you go to the post the edit topic button (near the post's bottom)it will allow you to put up a moderation request directly.
I've requested this one for you, but just so you know.

I think you’re both half-right there - that users can put up modifications to the title or abstract of their own threads, but they can’t request a deletion or a move or anything drastic like that.

No - I just voted on them. Probably just a slow day.

The Harvey Milk thread in Music needs a topic abstract. May I suggest:

Playing hard rock, with gravelly voices for pathos,
the band Harvey Milk is a trio from Athens.
As Georgians, they breakfast on possum with gravy.
The bass player looks just like Jeremy Davies.

Ah thenkew.

I certainly don't mind. I think you should try and contact Mac and Copey, however.

Golias is entitled to an opinion, but this doesn't appear to actually be an opinion, at least not in any meaningful sense given the level of discussion Barbelith in general and the Head Shop in particular aspires to. I've moved for the post to be deleted, and PMed Golias to tell hir to feel free to contribute something which explains what ze actually thinks about capitalism, neoliberalism, and democracy instead.

Any chance someone could mosey to the Comics forum and either
a)dropkick Mephisto's 'Best comic of 2005' thread into touch
or
b)change it to a more useful, encompassing thread.

as it stands it's just a blog promo, and a waste of space.

Cheese!

Oh, good grief. Okay, what I'm going to do is turn it into a general "Best comic of 2005" thread by removing Supes fromthe title and expanding the topic abstract. Sound fair?
