I had rather hoped they might try some form of out-of-the-DM-box (check it, I sound like a blogger) marketing for the All-Star titles.

Seems daft not to. Do Ultimate books still sell in Wal-Mart, or was that a BIG FAT MARVEL LIE?

Think for a moment, try and envision your friends, co-workers, and family, the people you see on the bus on the way to work...can anyone seriously expect that all of them are suddenly all going to be going out and buying SUPERMAN on a regular basis? Big chin or not, homoerotic smirks or not, quiet contemplative covers or slam-bang-in-your-face action covers....it's not going to make any difference. All-Star Superman will sell to the same fanboy market as always.

We're going to get 12 months of, in all likelihood, incredible Superman stories, but I don't think it's going to set the world on fire with Super-fever.

i agree, but i worry that the failure to set the world on fire may be laid at the feet of GM and FQ. basically, i don't want anyone at DC to be able to say "this was supposed to break us out into the mainstream, but this damn Quitely cover is too faggy/Morrison story is too weird, so it failed. it would have worked if we had used a more boring approach!"

Oh god, that sketch demonstrating how Clark slouches and sinks his chin in to look dumpy is BRILLIANT. It makes me actually believe that people would actually not notice it's the same guy.

Wow.

Thanks for posting - those sketches are awesome.

Isolating what seems to be the 'new' material in the article/interview:

>>Ma & Pa Kent—one dead. We're going with the version where Pa Kent has died. That's the day Superboy becomes a man.

And it lines up even more with the upcoming Bryan Singer SUPERMAN RETURNS, then, since he's following the movie continuity where Pa dies.

>> We've got a very different version of Lois. This is a Lois who's been through a lot. Superman's been lying to her for years. When she gets the real story in the first issue, she doesn't necessarily believe what he tells her. It's clearly a different dynamic. Lois and Clark are kind of seen as Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Lois likes Clark because he's smart and witty. Even though he's a big farm boy, he knows things; she can talk to him. There are really two Clark Kents. There's Clark on the farm and then Clark acting in Metropolis. The Clark I like is middle-America values and he applies those to morality. There's the new Clark Kent; he's interesting. He's the one I like. The bumbling Clark Kent is Superman acting. Every time he knocks something over he's doing it to save somebody.

Lois finds out in the first issue??? Cool...

>> Superman's pal has to be the coolest guy on Earth. We're doing Olsen as the guy every teenage boy wants to be—smart, fearless, funny, a big hit with the girls, a good loser, a great fighter, an action correspondent on the sexiest newspaper in town and best friend of Superman!

Interesting....a very cool Jimmy Olsen....should be unique...

>> Luthor is the part of us that's the most evil, the most human, and the most brilliant. He's never managed to get rid of Superman because deep down he knows that when he does, he'll be forced to prove himself to the world...and be found wanting. This is the subconscious engine that drives his hatred of his nemesis.

I love this character bit for Luthor.

Jeezus, the Supes' site guy apparently transcribed all of Morrison's bits from WIZARD. he left out Quitely's, though.

He doesn't say a great deal - just that his sandwich is nice, that he is sure that he can draw all the 12 issues as he has a six month head start, that it'd be fun for him to write and Grant to draw a Bizarro issue, and that he likes the characters.

new tidbits from WizardWorld LA, courtesy of Newsarma this weekend:

- Talking at length about All-Star Superman, Grant Morrison told fan attendees he wants to do a Superman story that everyone can get behind, remember and understand. Morrison is tying to capture the feel of the animated series, not steeped in a particular continuity.

As examples he said in his book Lois and Clark are _________ [clearly a typo/skipped word in the article] and Superman was Superboy in this youth.

Morrison explained he’s going to play with the fun elements of the Superman mythos from different era spanning different continuities, including his own. Solaris the Tyrant Sun from DC One Millions will appear.

His idea of the title is he’s telling the folktales of Superman … the stories highlighting the parts of the Superman mythos people will remember in a hundred or 500 years.

But he also wants to find new things in the characters as well. In a pure Morrison moment the writer said he’s wants to look at Lex Luthor and understand him in a different way make readers understand “Why Luthor draws Superman’s eyebrows on his own face.”

Frank Quitely has started illustrating and Morrison says it has a Neal Adams quality, particularly citing a scene of Superman flying over the surface of the sun in the first issue.

Each issue of All-Star will be self-contained. Issue #2 is a Lois story; issue #3 is a Jimmy Olsen story; and #4 will be a Bizarro story. This will be a new take on Bizarro in which anyone who touches Bizarro becomes a Bizarro.

Issue #5 will probably be a Superboy story. Morrison described the cover as Superboy and his dog looking down on a gravestone saying, “My father is dead and it’s all my fault”, a clear homage to the Silver Age.

All-Star Superman will be a 12 issue run, at least in regards to Morrison teaming with Quitely. The writer said 12 issues are all Quitely can handle before his head explodes. Their 12 issues will tell their whole story, but Morrison added he’d like to do more and has come up with another 8 stories already.

Asked by Berganza if the Legion of Superheroes will show up in the title, Morrison replied, “Well, now that you mention it...”

----------------------------------

What does he mean 'why Luthor draws Superman's eyebrows on his own face'? I guess 'why Luthor sees himself as the hero with the strong powerful handsome guy eyebrows'? ???

I'd guess the skipped word was "unmarried" or something similar.

I find it personally amusing that at least one person on Newsarama is worried because Grant is telling standalone stories. =)

He'll be Superboy in his teens...cool.

But no red trunks!?!?? Awww....I like the red trunks.

hmm I wonder if the Lex Luthor origin will include Lex loosing all of his hair in a chemical reaction (pre crisis) instead of from stress. In such a case wouldn't he need to add his own eyebrows?

Newsarama reports today:

>> ALL-STAR SUPERMAN DELAYED UNTIL DECEMBER
According to the press release issued announcing the branding of DC across all Warner Brothers media, All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely will see a three month delay from it's original September launch date.

The press release reads: In July, DC will unite two legends, Frank Miller (Sin City, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) and Jim Lee (Batman: Hush, Superman: For Tomorrow) for the new series All-Star Batman & Robin. The ongoing series will pair all-star creative teams with all-star characters to create memorable and dynamic adventures. In October, DC will publish Infinite Crisis, the most eagerly anticipated sequel in the history of comic books, to be written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Phil Jimenez. And in December, DC will unveil All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison (JLA) and Frank Quitely (X-Men).

No reason was given for the delay by DC in response to Newsarama's inquiry.

well, Vince probably needs more time so editorial can avoid holes in the monthly schedule, as it happened with NEW X-MEN.

>> ALL STAR SUPERMAN #1

Written by Grant Morrison, art and cover by Frank Quitely.

DC launches the newest addition to its All Star line of comics -- where the industry's top creative talents refine the iconic focus of the world's greatest super-heroes. Writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely -- the team behind JLA: Earth 2 -- are at it once again, this time to strip down the Man of Steel to his timeless, essential elements.

The series kicks off with a 12-issue story arc touching on all the classic aspects of the Superman mythology, starting with a daring rescue of a doomed group of helionauts on the surface of the sun. The massive amounts of solar radiation affect Superman in a way no one could possibly anticipate -- except Lex Luthor.

32 pg., $2.99, on sale Nov. 16.

So only the first issue's done?

Meaning we'll all orgasm and weep after the first issue's out then moan for another six months till issue 2's out? Kinda irritated that Quitely had a year's headstart and only drew one issue.

Frank Quitely was at a convention in Toronto this past weekend. He's as nice and funny a gent as they come. He said he is currently 4 pages into issue #2 of ASS. If he can pull off 6 issues in 1 year, I'll be happy.

He was also in an "artist's duel" with Carlos Pachecko of Green Lantern fame. Actually, Carlos never showed up, and while organizers scrambled to find a replacement, FQ got a head start on his drawing. Despite this, late replacement Karl Kerschal (of Adv of Superman) still finished first. It was pretty funny. They answered questions and chatted while drawing. The sketches were then raffled off to 2 lucky bastards.

Um. How do I say this without betraying everything I believe in?

I, uh, I wasn't too, too crazy about Quitely's art here. As much as I loved the digital inking work on New X-Men and We3 (and I LOVED it, folks), it's seems to be sort of robbing the work of its intensity here. Which is a shame, because there is a vast army of fanboys just WAITING for even the slightest hint of weakness from Camp Quitely, and on a book of this magnitude combined with the drubbing ASBARTBW got, well, it's just unfortunate is all.

Storywise, it's pretty great, I mean the only way you can take the line "Fear is the SAUCE on the steak of life, Floral!" is to just dive right into the sheer hoke.

After a second flip through, the main problem seems to be the spot blacks, as the line work is, as usual, impeccable. Maybe this is something they'll be improving before launch. Or maybe this is the style he's going for. We'll see.
