i love Quitely's art normally, but with the ginormous chin Clark looks a bit like the guy from American Dad.

Never question the taste of a man who calls himself 'Flight of Dragons'. I love that cover. Sat on a cloud, protecting us. Understated and v. nice.

Does it make you want to kill yrself because he's so much more perfecter than you Flight of Dragons?
I like the attempt to portray him in another pose than the flying-fist-thrust they always go for.

The more I look at that cover, the more I like it.

That cover perfectly captures Morrison's quoted image of Superman sitting on a cloud, looking peaceful and happy and watching over all of us, from Morrison's interview at the beginning of this thread.

I like how mellow and happy he looks.

He'd probably say "yeah", though.

The Falcon
17:05 / 20.02.05
The Man of Steel would opt for a stolid 'yes', every time, Triplets.

If you don't know that, you probably don't know anything.

He looks a bitty inscrutable there.

Haus of Mystery
17:26 / 20.02.05
Whereas Batman would always go 'hhn'. Flash is more of a 'yeah' man. Perhaps Wonder Woman and Aquaman a regal 'indeed'.

Fuck I'm sad.

The Falcon
17:32 / 20.02.05
J'Onn wouldn't say 'yeah' either. So that's that sorted.

Triplets
18:11 / 20.02.05
J'onn would say "Agreed" or "I concur", like Brent Spinner. Get it right.

I think Morrison doing superman is like putting a nuke in one of his hands, the trigger in the other, and daring him to push it.

PS
I like explosions.

those are not clouds, but soopadope's fumes, shizzle. hh-yeah.

edit: and I just noticed, the logo in the cape is slightly remixed from what's used today. maybe this is what Quitely reffered to in WIZARD to just tooling with it a bit but keeping the effect. glad to see the pair of fishes are there.

Awesome cover. I love it to death, and I can't wait for September(!?). Quitely rules all.

In a perfect world, this would sell a bazillion more copies than the Frank Miller / Jim Lee Batman, which will be a bunch of shit we've seen a million times before. But of course it won't. Miller will write Batman all gritty and Lee will draw him in that Image style I hate SO MUCH, and this Superman book, which should be something fresh and interesting, will be lucky to sell half as many copies.

The Natural Way
14:44 / 22.02.05
Hmmm, I don't know if I'd describe DKSA as "gritty". I'm actually quite curious about Miller's new bat-stuff. But, yeah, I want supes more.

Macgyver and I had exactly the same thought re Super-Flex. It's nice to see him back. Grant writes the big, perfect Dad archetype real well.

yeah dksa bats isn't 'gritty', he's just 'crazed'. that's what i hope the newold bats will be like: flamboyant nutjob billionaire, world's leading expert on violence. just a crazy man barely getting away with it - completely unhinged, always wins at the end.

I'm not crazy about the "new" Superman logo - I thought these would be the iconic versions of the characters (and logos)? Maybe it's just on the cape...but I'm not fretting about it, I'll enjoy the story just as much if it's the "new" way in the story, don't worry. As long as Supes doesn't say "yeah" ;p

My brain turned to slurry, and yours will too. The ByrneRobotics children discuss the cover.

More FQ references though. Very good.

Isn't Superman, though, however well you write, draw or even market the guy, an essentially quite boring and middle-class/upper working class figure ? He's a craftsman essentially, he's terrified of Lois, he sits about tinkering away in the Fortress Of Solitude - whatever he does to 'save the world' it's always by definition going to be a half-assed effort, and he doesn't seem to mind.

I think Byrne's first response was pretty funny:

"So these are ElseWorlds?"

Missed the point already.

Triplets

If they're supposed to be iconic, why a) alter the Superman logo

God, pedants. Superman is more than his S.

That said, I do like the alterna-esses on Frank's sketches there. I can see what Goraiko was talking about and thematically I see what he was doing: reducing the S to it's core components. Just like the Superman All-Star concept as a whole.

Alex, that question deserves a new thread, plus I'd rather not fill the answers to that up in a thread all about Grodd's lovely new comic.

thanks for the sketches. I won't read Byrne's forum yet, don't want my brain to melt this early. let's not forget The Madness and that he thinks The Onion is a serious Journalism site... I only wish he posted less on the intranerd and drew more.

see how a pain it must be to draw the old/current logo repeatedly with all those spaces. the first 'two bubbles' could probably be Morrison's idea, taken from the One Million version. thenew one is great, and stresses the 'fish/pisces' symbology so pertinent to Supes, our own Christ.

Does anyone else think the Jim Lee promo art for the Batman stuff is really shit?

Me too but I'm biased. I've never liked Jim Lee.

Oh man that thread makes me realise:

1) I want to kiss Ethan Van

2) That cover is an inspired change of pace

what does Ethan V. have to do with All-Star Supes?

The new Wizard cover with QUitely doing Supes and Lee doing Bats shows a weird disparity in style that doesn't jive too well. Quitely's attempt at a cliche Wizard cover superhero action pose looks...weird.

Triplets
17:49 / 24.02.05
It looks okay. It looks weird constrasting Quitely's 3D photo-cartoon style with Lee's tickmark fetish.

I like how Lee managed to get the old school Bat logo on Batman's head, though.

What's the deal with the big blank patch in the middle of Metropolis? Central Park?

Is "Metropolis as thinly veiled New York" becoming "New York, but we're calling it Metropolis"?

Not that I can talk. I've been responsible for at least one thinly veiled New York myself.

what does Ethan V. have to do with All-Star Supes?

I think JETUH was referring to Mr Van S's role as "voice of reason" in the JBF's "Superman looks gay" moronathon. (Love JB's vigorous "here's a picture of a lady" defence of his own heterosexuality.)

ARSE. Sorry, that above post was supposed to be a footnote to this one.

I think the cover looks gorgeous- it's a great representation of Superman, and one I'm fairly surprised hasn't been used more often. I love the "here's my city, doesn't it rock?" idea, and the way he seems to be letting us in on a secret- what it's like to lok down from clouds.

But... SEPTEMBER????????

Oh God, I hate that forum

They look like "bedroom eyes" to me, and it's kind of creepy. That's my opinion, period. Keep in mind that I have several friends who are gay, and one of my favorite nephews is also gay, so I'm not necessarily homophobic, and I've also been known to find "Will and Grace" to be rather funny on occasion

My wife said it looked like a depiction of Superman doing a "Jesus on the mount"-type pose, and I just don't like to think of Superman in that way (especially not looking "down" on us with a smug expression).

I'm not a homophobe but Superman is totally trying to rape me sexually! In the butt! With heatvision!

Personally, I can't say I see anything sexually
suggestive in Superman's contented "hey, check out
my great city" expression. Guys, I know you're totally
hot and all, but sometimes Superman isn't
hitting on you.

Hee! Glad to see one or two JBF posters are getting the right amount of oxygen. I totally vote for inviting Ethan Vann and Shannon Gheotty here. And sexxing them. With heatvision.

Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!

I don't know about bedroom eyes, but he does look sleepy.

SLEEPILY INVITING, I MEAN! Probably so he can beat me with his big chin. There's something I want to see. Why would Superman punch when he could bop you with his chin?

It's a nice cover. He looks like a cute innocent child.
