Bendis seems to have retconned Bova the cow matron woman from Spider-Woman's origin, in the pages of the new Spider-Woman: Origin - now she's a human-looking woman with the name Bova. However, I guess continuity extremists could say it's the cow woman with an image inducer or something like that.

New Avengers continues to be fun - but did anyone think the line at the end with the media saying "Tony Stark is not only lying about his connection to Iron Man" was kind of odd, since Marvel had Tony Stark reveal he was IM, then undo it with House of M or Scarlet Witch magic or 'we at Marvel just felt like taking it back and pretending the average citizens of the Marvel U. never were told at all'?

The Iron Man: Dissasembled "tie-in", which ended the previous run, returned Iron Man to status quo and Tony Stark is once again not associated with Iron Man.

was there an explanation given for why the public suddenly doesn't know he's IM after he had announed to the world that he was? (all I know is that most fans, like myself, assumed it had something to do with Scarlet Witch magic but I don't think I've ever seen anything that directly says that)

This review explains it better than I can.

There's a new Iron Man mini out that deals alot with this. Basically, he denies being anything other than the developer and sponsor of Iron Man. Everyone else just nods and smiles, "Riiiiiiiight..."
Kinda like Matt Murdock/Daredevil.

Thanks, those last 2 posts explain it more clearly to me than I've seen before.

For that, no explanation has been given. Nor I do think we will get one.

Oh, um, anyway, the latest issue of New Avengers in a nutshell:

"Dear Ed Brubaker, I loved Sleeper thiiiiiiis much! Love Brian - Who? - You know, the guy who - Oh him - Bendis."

new issue out, surprising about of focus/pages on Carol Danvers. They're really working hard to give her the spotlight since Bendis' friend and Spider-Woman:Origin co-writer Brian Reed is about to do a Ms. Marvel ongoing series (Reed also co-wrote the Ult. Spidey videogame with Bendis).

Fun moment with Jonah - although since Bendis had Jonah soften up a tiny bit towards superheroes in his ALIAS series, I thought the moment might have really been genuine.

I did like the big 'team official announcement to the press' bit - made me feel nostalgiac for when Cap brought out the Kooky Quartet and Busiek's similar scene around Avengers #27.

so the New Avengers are going to get Disassmbled too, eh?

if it means I can see Howard Chaykin do mainstream Marvel characters, then I'm all for it (though only for one issue, from what I understand).

this ish was a blast. straight-up comic book action... with a nice reveal on the final page.

I did enjoy this issue a lot, esp. after last issue (which didn't even really feature The Avengers). Luke Cage's 'let's use superhero teams to police urban neighborhoods every once in a while' idea was great.

from the Marvel panel recently at the Philly Con (courtesy comic book resources):

>> The ramifications of Black Widow’s cold war with the US government will show up in "New Avengers" after the events of "Civil War," and more in an as yet undisclosed event coming afterwards.

I guess they mean the blonde BW (Yelena Bolova); who recently showed up in the fun New Avengers Annual (wedding of Luke & Jessica)...?

Also, editors have said that the New Avengers lineup will be pretty different after Civil War. I've found the Bendis New Avengers entertaining so far. I do like that they've shaken things up, even if some issues don't have that much actually happening in them (what with this whole "Collective" thing). Spider-Man being psych-tortured by SHIELD for info. on the House of M was cool, nice dramatic scene... since you could see strong justifications for both SHIELD's side and Spidey's side. Why didn't the heroes tell the gov't about HoM anyway? I guess because they were afraid the gov't would do what they're doing in Civil War now...?

Wow. Howard Chaykin really cannot draw, can he? That was like reading early "Shadowhawk".

Chaykin is a damn good artist, but he was obviously rushed to do this issue. His Captain America was very sloppy and it looked like he used a sharpie to draw his scale mail.
Hank Pym is a turncoat chode.

/Sort of On-Topic Thread Rot:
My flatmate (who steals all my comics) took one look at the latest issue of New Avengers and says to me "Wow. Who's this crappy artist?"

I say: "That's Howard Chaykin."

"Who?"

"He's a writer/artist that used to be pretty okay. I think the only thing you'd know him from is as the writer of Bite Club."

"Wasn't that the vampire book where the covers were the best part?"

"Yes."
End Sort-of Rot\

Yes, the art really was rather ugly. Not quite Modern John Byrne Ugly, but still ugly.

Yeah, this issue's art was pretty poor - his Hawkgirl art has been stronger than this (I just skim it in the store, stoppped buying Hawkgirl after the first mediocre issue). And even his Hawkgirl art is hardly his best.

I'm pretty impressed with JMS' approach, actually. ASM and FF have both been pretty great so far.

("Hey, my cousin HG in DC is a PA for BET so we need that CD ASAP." Acronyms always make me think of Dog Bites Man now.)

Yeah, the Civil War story is giving JMS his first good writing in over a year, although I'm still not liking his Fantastic Four. Other than the issue when Ben Grimm finds out he's incredible rich, I haven't cared at all about his run.

But then, I like the Mark Waid/Karl Kesel approach to the FF.

I know what you mean, although I think Strasyxshtini is doing an okay job with Spidey. Bendis is one of those rare writers in mainstream comics who seems to have a handle on character motivation, and that's extra essential when you're trying to sell people on what is, in the end, a rather flawed idea.

I was quite taken aback by the clumsiness of some of the dialogue in this week's FF. I mean, it was just really, really terrible.

It was horribly clumsy, but the advance preview (sans wordbubbles) made me realize that it could have been a silent issue. The tone and actions was very well illustrated. I liked that scene where Ms. Marvel expects Ben to help and he just turns and walks away.
Nice to know that the Yancy Street Gang is anti-registration. I want to see one of them throw a pie at Iron Man.

I've been enjoying the Bendis Avengers books as fun superhero adventure... sure, the plotting has been a little slow over in Mighty Avengers, but that's because he's spending a lot of time on flashbacks to show how the team was assembled.

Lenil Francis Yu is an artist I really like...except in recent issues of New Avengers, his art has been particularly dense, leading it to come off a bit scratchy, muddy and cramped in places. It doesn't help that the colorist is using a muddy palate overall. Still, some enjoyable stuff.

oh, and Bendis has said multiple times in interviews lately that we're finally going to find out who was behind breaking tons of villains out of the Vault in issue 1, and behind the conspiracy with the Savage Land, etc. etc. ....

I like where Mighty Avengers is going, but I could have really done to have all the flashbacks over and done with in issue 1 and then had a bit more movement in 2 -- flashbacks taking up a significant portion of #2 made it seem a bit sluggish, especially given that the flashbacks are all a bit boring. Simon wants to be a movie star but joining the Avengers instead.

I like Carol Danvers being the new leader, but I can't stand Ares; the fact that (as a comic book character rather than in the mythological context) he's just an amalgam of types with a limited reaction palette is boring enough, but the characters keep commenting on it. I hope he ends up as another forgotten Avengers and possibly they can bring in another character to replace him...who isn't a brick.

It's very much a new title but I am enjoying it, even if it is moving a little slow. Frank Cho's artwork is so slick and attractive that I'm hoping the writing evens out a bit. They could do to get rid of a couple characters (I don't think the Sentry's very interesting, honestly).

Third issue's out today, innit?

I read an interesting column earlier today about Ares, and I think the author has it right. Ares should be a lot more than just a scrapper. He's the freaking God of War. He should be the team's tactician, if not the leader, but he's being used horribly. Ultron may be able to defeat say, Wonder Man, but this is a God! There's a ton of potential there, and using him simply as muscle is a huge waste.

true - however, aside from the Oeming-written mini which I never read, we're only 3 issues into Bendis using Ares, and clearly Bendis is handling a large cast. So I think there could (hopefully) be more development in store for him... I know Bendis has hinted at Ares' daddy issues (something about Zeus being pissed at him or something for wanting to live in the mortal world a la Thor).

Err actually from a myth point of few Ares was savage war i.e blood lust and no planning .

Athen was martial prowess

Yes, but Athena has soft bits. Modern comics have no need of soft bits, unless they're to inspire young girls to heroism by bending over frequently, being raped, or horribly scarred so they're not so pretty and alluring and tricksy no more. None of that, please. We have Ares for the young childrens to look up to.

Besides, it's Ares. I may have that Kevin Smith guy in my head when I think about him, but it's still one of those 'when you have anti-tank missiles' kinda thing. When you are Ares, the strategy to call on is always, "I am Ares."

The 3rd issue of Mighty Avengers was, I thought, a step in the right direction, mostly because things started to actually happen. Pacing has always been Bendis' biggest problem, and I felt that finally things were really going on, as opposed to the last two. Not that the man doesn't still need an editor who tells him to trim the fat, but alas. Anything with Ultron is good, of course, but since when do Pym and Tigra have a thing? Is this new, or has this been hinted at before?

FinderWolf
23:46 / 16.05.07
Totally new, to my impression. Altough they were both on the West Coast Avengers years ago when Tigra was in heat on a regular basis... which was actually a plot point (her tiger/feline side was getting out of control; it was like her Id, basically). I guess every feral-based character in comics has to have a story arc where their feral side threatens to take over and such.
