Young Avengers is alot of fun! And...Domino has luck powers!?! I didn't even know that one! Not big on X-Force anyway!

And yeah the good luck powers are retarded. It's an easy out for lazy writing!

I see that question every time I open this topic, and I think: "Yeah, Duncan. That's a pretty stupid character."

Maybe I was trying to make a point about the use of the word 'retarded', can't remember.

This series continues to be fun - and we get Bendis once again showing his fascinating with the Grant Morrison Animal Man run (Bendis toyed with the idea of comic book characters who are aware that they are being written by writers at the end of his Alias run, with the Purple Man).

I like the Wrecker. The Wrecking Crew are ace. Bring on the rest of 'em.

Yeah, fun read.. the art was delightful this issue.

The inclusion of the other Marvel Universe Big shots in the opening sequence was nice.

The Wrecker was great and the scope of that brawl was very sharp; having random people notice various heroes being tossed across the neighborhood was great.

I've been considering getting this series (love Steve McNiven mainly), do you recommend skipping the first 6 issues and jumping on with this story?

Jamie mate, the first couple of issues might be right up your alley but Bendis dropped the ball with the arc very quickly even though it was probably the easiest story you could write considering it's relevance to world affairs.

If my opinion matters, skipping the first six might be a good idea. Read a synopsis of the first two isues and the pages of plot about Sentry or ask.

I recommend the new story arc, whether you're read the first 6 issues or not - great art by McNiven, fun story by Bendis, can't lose so far.

It occured to me today that the Sentry could be the reincarnation of Thor. Ragnarok destroyed the gods and Asgard. Could he have recreated himself in the image of a more modern god archetype, the comic book superhero? He appears to have the same powers-- flight, strength, lightning. He even resembles the Ultimate Thor, down to the fat belt and wristbands. How does the Ragnarok story end exactly? I didn't read it all.

Okay, I'm totally wrong about the Sentry. He is the real Sentry, and Thor's coming back another way.

A friend told me the plotline of Millar's new Thor series that's coming this fall. He'll have a new mortal identity and again stumbles upon the hammer. But he and Sentry do have alot in common.

I picked up the series to date and it's weird... I hated it when I flipped through the issues in the store but after picking up TONS (144-320!) of the old issues it really is just the Avengers... with Bendis jokes which work sometimes... sometimes.

Very weird to think it's such a hot title when it's delivering the same basic stories done back in the day.

You guys should come over and read the Wrecking Crew story from the 80's where Cap cries.

That said I prefer Young Avengers (the comic, I'm not telling you anything about my other habits) since it has such a unique vibe and energy sadly lacking in most comics.

Oh and I've been reading DD for years... I get excited sometimes by it and really roll my eyes other times. For all his good (and it IS good), Bendis could accomplish the same in half the pages most times.

Anyone reading Black Panther? Or Geoff John's early Avengers comics (the second two trades are terrible).

Bendis' last installment of Daredevil "10 Commandments" was brilliant and probably the best Daredevil story I'd read since he started his run.
I was reading Black Panther, but it moves way too slow for me to enjoy it.

tell us more about Millar's Thor concept! Where did you find out about this? When will they announce it?

Oh, and Black Panther is really pretty weak, although decent JrJr. art. Reggie Hudlin proves himself to be a mediocre comic book writer at best, with lots of obvious political jabs at the Bush admin. (I hate 'em too, but obvious cheap easy jokes taking shots at Bush in a poorly-written comic don't make it any less poorly-written -- for example, the US gov't and White House advisors talk about 'invading, uh, I mean, helping Wakanda')

Hudlin just became head of programming or whatever for BET and will soon be done writing Marvel Knights Spider-Man (which is ten times worse than his Black Panther writing). He says he'll keep writing Black Panther but I give him another 10 issues at most before Marvel lets him go due to low sales and consistent reader complaints about his writing.

Finderwolf: While I agree that Hudlin's Spiderman is really badly written, and in my opinion coupled with dodgy art, I'd have to disagree with you on his Black Panther. I admit that Romita Jr's art may have quite a lot to do with my enjoyment, but I reckon it's an entertaining superhero comic with a couple of nice flourishes. The Bush-baiting isn't nearly as clever as he thinks it is, but it's still a nice take on Black Panther & his background, though I will concede that it isn't the fasted paced book around.

Wizard is doing a director's commentary sort of thing with New Avengers, and they've got bits of it online at their site. Here's one silly bit from Bendis (I include this because when I read the book I thought "PLEASE, no more characters declaring 'This ends now!' in comics, EVER!":

>> New Avengers #2, p. 11

THIS ENDS NOW!

BENDIS: I grant you, that's the most cliche line of dialogue in all of comics. [Laughs] But Cap's the one guy who can say it and get away with it. By the way, don't use that line in real life when you're fighting with your wife. It doesn't work. [Laughs]

new issue was fun, more nice art by McNiven, curious to see where they're going with this Sentry story...

Yeah the sentry story is curious. He certainly has a solid THOR archtype going on.

Loved the fact that the 1st page wasn't a damned "what's happened so far" page.

Between this and GØDLAND there seems to be a bit of a silver age revival.

Liked the reacion to Spierwoman's scent "I thought I was going crazy" and I LOVE Luke considering keeping the crowbar. It's the little moments that are make this book click (for me) Iron Man trying to explain that the Avengers need a Killer in the team.

and of course beautiful art.

I also liked the angle that Wolverine needs to try to clean up his image after being mind-controlled by Hydra and the Hand in the recent Millar storyline - actually uses the Millar plot and makes sense, it adds another layer onto the 'we need someone who isn't afraid to kill now and then' angle of his being on the team.

Bendis just announced at Chicago that:

>> First up is “Spider-Woman: Origin,” a five issue mini-series to debut this December written by Bendis and Brian Reed )who worked with Bendis on the Ultimate Spider-Man video game) with art by the Luna Bros., as announced during Wizard World Chicago. The book will set out to finally straighten out the character's many, messy origins and present the definitive one.

>> Then, following the completion of that series, a new, ongoing “Spider-Woman” series will debut by Bendis with art by “Daredevil” artist Alex Maleev.

i did like the fact that they mentioned Wrecker and the Wrecking Crew getting their asses whipped by the fucking Runaways, of all people, though it makes less sense to see Wolverine and Spidey getting tossed around by the same guy who jobbed to a few inexperienced teenagers, but whatever.

I'm glad that Bendis is finally getting the chance to write Jessica Drew. My memory may be faulty, but wasn't Alias' Jessica Jones originally supposed to be Jessica Drew but that got vetoed before launch?

FinderWolf
13:17 / 08.08.05
you are correct, sir. That's why Bendis invented Jessica Jones. Bendis even came up with a full-blown Jessica Drew pitch with art by Rick Mays, who recently drew the 5-page short Bendis-written story in the Spider-Woman special which reprinted lots of old material.

Just read the collection of 1-6 at the bookstore. Not bad. I didn't hate the dialogue, and I chuckled alot reading Spiderman's dialogue. Captain America sounded right. They all did really.

Not enough Sentry. I saw him rip carnage in half and throw him into outer space, but never saw him again.

Didn't like spider-woman cutting wolvie's throat with his own claws because she has "super good shield training". Seemed like a "my favorite character fucked up Wolverine, see she's badass!" moment on Bendis' part.

When Iron Man was telling Steve that Wolverine was the missing part of the team? I was sure he was going to compare Wolvie to the Hulk not Cap. But thinking back, I guess comparing him to the Avenger who left after like 3 days and went about to fuck shit up all over the world wasn't a great sell.

When Cap invites Spidey onto the team, finally convinces him, and then Spidey asks how much they get paid or something like that? And Cap says they don't anymore? That had me laughing. Bendis does a really good Spiderman.

it just so happens that the 2nd arc is all about the Sentry, currently about halfway through.

And yeah, I thought Jessica Drew getting the better of Wolvy was a bit odd, although Bendis did throw in that explanation that all the weird smells of the Savage Land had him temporarily flummoxed for a bit...

Good thought, actually...but your own follow-up thought sort of explains why maybe they're not the greatest parallel.

what's interesting is that Bendis has vowed that no one has guessed his ID yet, and the obvious guesses which have been made en masse on the net were Daredevil incognito, Iron Fist or even the new female White Tiger FBI agent (niece or second cousin or something to the White Tiger who died in Bendis' run in that big trial story arc).

According to the solicits, Ronin is going to be Captain America's entry into the team (much as Wolvie was Iron Man's).

Heh, I figure at least it's not Jack Monroe.

And if it was Snake Eyes, I think I might actually wet myself. And I'm drunk enough to say that, tonight.
