Dark action movie type prison break.
The art seems to be improving but this could just be the pressance of all that "black."

Spiderwoman vs. Carnage.

DD vs. Hyde

Spiderman vs. E V E R Y O N E

Cap is pissed at Ironman.

Sentry vs. Foggy Nelson

&

Purple Man vs. Power Man

Worth getting? Scrappy or tight Bendis?

I liked it.
Not dialogue heavy at all, just straight up Fit hits the Shan action and some enjoyable charactor bits.

I liked it too, fun action stuff. And Spidey really get worked over - ouch!

The Sentry is back! And yes, that means Bendy will have to deal with the Void too...

Interesting to see psycho Carnage, who I'd forgotten about...I'm used to the Ultimate Carnage.

Jessica/Spider-Woman doesn't seem to have much of a personality yet. Of course she doesn't get much to do and there are a lot of characters running around here.

Although I liked it, I have to say that I've seen ENOUGH comic book heroes yelling 'THIS ENDS NOW!' as they confront rampaging villains.

Does Bendis just really like the name 'Jessica'?

And....The Purple Man! NOOOOOO!!! Great cliffhanger ending. And of course, it's Luke Cage, who has a personal vendetta against ol' Purply.

Kudos to Bendis for making the Purple Man the creepy, scary mo-fo he should have been all along, with those "I can make anyone do anything" powers.

The original very early proposal for ALIAS had Jessica Drew be the main character. When Bendis decided he didn't want to use a pre-existing character, he came up with Jessica Jones. So I think there was the "Jessica" template there. I don't think that back then he expected to be using Jessica Drew in a book.

Who the fuck would spend cover price on this turd? (#2) Sure it's competent, but it's just fucking boring. No joy, no sorrow, just a lot of people punching each other. And not in a way which is easy to read, thanks to all that darkness and gloom.

Fuck this.

i thought it was alright. i'm mostly interested in this to see the Spidey-on-a-team dynamics, and so far, i got nothin'. still, not bad for what it is. wouldn't mind seeing a little sunlight, though.

i also can't believe Bendis wants us to believe that any adult would ever call Spider-Man *ahem* "Spider-Ass."

"Spider-Ass?" "Spider-Ass?"

hmmmm was is one of those Spider-@#^$ type statements? I probably read it as Spder-fuck.

some villain called him that, I think, as they were all beating him up.

This book is sort of like a decently-done slick action movie so far...a fun popcorn movie. Fine by me.

and what's also interesting to me is that the Sentry is sort of Superman in the Marvel Universe, in terms of his powers and power level. When the Sentry started showing up and kicking ass, the way it was played, and the awe from the other MU characters, was very much like Superman.

Can somebody explain the Sentry's history, and what's the Void?

I thought it was fine, but on the people punching each other thing, IMO Bendis really can't do good action scenes. He can do drama - mostly successfully - he can do dialogue - up to a point - and he can certainly do character, but I don't think I've ever seen him do a really kick-arse battle, and, frankly, if he's gonna write Avengers, he bloody well should be able to.

I mean, he's got a bunch of A-list heroes and a whole (ahem) Raft of super-villains but not one oh shit, that's fucking cool! moment.

Say what you like about Millar, if this were an issue of The Ultimates I would've pissed myself with excitement (assuming he was on form).

Could somebody be bothered to read the first page of the thread?

The void is something I stare into constantly having spent too much time reading Avengers threads.

Actually i thought the action scenes we're rather well done. Taking into acount the close enviroment (presumably how Spiderman wasnt able to escape ) and villians actually hitting themselfs.

Quite well plotted.

I mainly enjoyed it(and im hoping here) for having witness the death of carange .

I liked the little greyscale boxes which told you the name of the villian currently "on camera" and their powers. Quick and simple. No need for extended caption boxes, or *shudder* Claremontian "I'll tell you about my history and my powers while I fight you" dialogue.

"Spider-ass" was terrible. Editorial change, perhaps? I mean, I know it could be tied in to Hyde calling him "ass" earlier but it still sounded shite...

Well plotted is different from bloody, fucking exciting, no?

Yeah, I enjoyed the death of Carnage. I - like Bendis - think the character is more than a bit rubbish, but I couldn't help feeling a little uneasy with the vanity of the scene - shades of Kevin Smith and the death of Mysterio (and that really was vain, fatuous silliness).

All I'm saying is, Bendis should have written one of the kick-arse fights of the year, and he didn't. You've got the Avengers, you've got an army of super-villains, it really is a no-brainer.

Hmmmm. I think you're right to a dgree, Bobboss, but I still enjoyed this book. As a relaunch of The World's Greatest Superteam it feels almost lo-fi and grimy, almost the opposite of Grant's League reinvention (which I also loved of course). I dunno, I keep thinking I'll drop it then perversely enjoying it, like a trashy action movie. 7/10.

Spaniel
09:59 / 10.01.05
I'm not saying I disliked the book. I'm saying that it didn't live up to it's potential, and that I've yet to see a Bendis comic with a big fight that did.

He just isn't very good at !Action!, IMO, which is a shame because he can do everything else well enough.

Haus of Mystery
11:08 / 10.01.05
Yeah, I guess. I agree that Millar, for all his massive faults sure can do the ass-rupturing action thing better than most of his peers. A mix of the two should make for great sooperheroes, but Ult FF proved it didn't. Ahhh well. At least New Avengers is shaping up quite nasty.

I'll wait for issue 3 before giving the final verdict.

1 and 2 seem to have been the "scene" setters. The build up to Sentrys re-introduction as a superhero.

Given the current line up they had in the first 2 issues(short of Iron Man maybe), i wouldnt have said any of them we're capable of the , flash bang fights of the previous members. Only (of teh new brigade)Jessica has energy powers , all the rest are hitters and not that heavy at that.

Powers don't male good fight scenes. Writers make good fight scenes.

>> Yeah, I enjoyed the death of Carnage.

Now, now, we know Bendis doesn't like the character, but it's a bit much to assume Carnage is truly "dead", at least as dead as a comic book villain can be.

I hate Carnage too, but we're kidding ourselves if we don't think he'll magically reconstitute himself in a year or two cause some crappy writer wants to use him.

Spaniel
13:46 / 10.01.05
Of course he will, but the scene gave a good account of Bendis's contempt for the character.

Basically Carnage is giving DD, Cage and Spider Woman a bit of trouble, so Sentry (after being persuaded to act by none other than Foggy Nelson) grabs him, flies into space and rips him in half.

***SPOILERS***

Carnage is attacking Luke Cage and Spider-Woman in a corridor. Luke is yelling how he has unbreakable skin, Spider-Woman is firing her little energy bolts at him, Foggy convinces Sentry to help, which he does by grabbing Carnage, flying him up through 11 floors ("boom"-ing all the way) and finally ripping him in half in the upper atmosphere (or possibly space. We see the curve of the Earth, either way).

I forsee the Carnage bits falling to Earth, surviving cos he's an alien an' that, the two pieces being discovered by two different people, resulting in the creation of two new symbiote characters, (one good, one evil). The story will culminate in the two people meeting (in the presence of Spider-Man, natch) and Carnage being reborn. It'll all happen in one of Spidey's own books. It'll happen within the next year or two. It'll be shit.
